For many years I have seen homeless folks -- here in the DC area, in Syracuse (where a significant number die of exposure each winter), anywhere I've lived. The sadness is palpable, not even penetrable. A heartbreaking song. Look for a song named "Daniel Lee" sung by, among others, Mack Bailey if you like this.
I used to think negatively of homeless people until I heard this song. It makes me think of them now as people down on their luck more than as people who gave up trying or got lazy. Thank you, Don McLean, for helping me to care.
This may sound like a very American song but I think its about any homeless, downtrodden person anywhere in the world. Don wrote this with such a deep understanding of such people. It's amazing! He's amazing!
I just saw Don Mclean in concert about 20 minutes ago, and he played this song. Man, this song almost made me cry. I've been homeless before and this song touched my heart.
Don McLean and Pete Seeger Pres. and V.P. Of The Society For The Preservation Of Music With A Conscience! I love these guys for their Music and their brilliant message as the Last Great Folksinging American Heroes!
I remember the first time I heard this song. His descriptions of the down trodden are very haunting and chilling. One wonders where he got such insight. A true American songwriter in the tradition of Woodie Guthrie and Pete Seeger. I love this song.
My old man had this album as soon as it came out. Not trendy. Not pop. Not bent on "I'm getting laid tonight and f anything else". Not that I'm not keen on getting laid, and f anything else.
This song is still as fresh, as authentic and as beautifully-crafted as it was 35 years ago. Most popular art may be about excitement, but there's more to art than fizz.
I loved this the first time I had the pleasure of hearing it, and NOTHING over the years has changed my sentiments toward this classic that gives new meaning to the words timeless and unbelievable!
What a song,just what a song!

Feeling sad in America is the same globally. And it is the best way to express the hardship we feel when others are in pain.

I had this album a long time ago. I remember the cover had a quote from Jack Kerouac....."The woods are full of wardens"

I haven't heard this since circa 1995, it just kinda got lost from my view. I'm so glad that I re-found it. Classic Mclean.
