Energy comes from the Bible. If there's no Bible, you're stuck with your own selfish, half-developed character. For some it's failure, for others self-righteousness. But if there is no Bible, there is no change. Your comment: "Just because they read the Bible and did good things, doesn't mean they were right away better than teens today". You are in error - they did good things because they read the Bible. We live in a degenerate culture. You are the only exception left!

Sure, in the olden days our culture was more biblically based, and that was certainly a good thing, but just because they read the Bible and did good things, doesn't mean they were right away better than teens today. Being a self-righteous hypocrite isn't actually better than being a lazy rebel. It's about knowing God and letting Him work THROUGH you. =)
