I'm from England and coming to LA in may for a holiday and will be renting a Mustang GT to drive in. Are the drivers in LA as bad as they make them out to be? Any neighbourhood's I should avoid or highway's at certain times? Any substantially different rules to driving on American roads other than drive on the other side of the road lol.

There are our fair share of "bad drivers" out here, but as long as you drive on the defensive, you should be ok. And as for places to avoid... as long as you are just passing through, you should be ok. BTW... unless you like the "club scene" or spending money, the Sunset Strip is overrated. So Cal has nice beaches and parks. Come in May because the weather usually is best then... we LA drivers are notorious for not being able to drive on our first day of rainy weather.
