Generation of tsunami by a subduction zone earthquake

id like to know if there were any fishermen or boats above or close to where the sumatrian earthquake happened. they say tsunamis are unnoticable out in the open sea but im sure that the sea directly above the plate that sprung up must have looked like an atom bomb went off untill the water leveled out and spread outwards. does anyone know of any such accounts of this happening. it would be amazing to see the ocean lift up like that if even for a second.

Those 9.0 or greater earthquakes which occur in subduction zones are always deadly.
