btw, the needing internet (WiFi or network) is not true... the GPS satellite has nothing to do with either of those components.. 3G hater

u just need an internet connection do donwload maps ... once it is downloaded it is saved so u can position ur self without internet after the first time but u will see the maps u downloaded and u will not see any updates in the maps until u connect to the internet again.

Not to use the GPS itself, but you need internet to download the satellite images/maps, so it's pretty much useless without internet.

I was told almost all Nokia phones require to purchase maps separately in order to work. Except 6110 Navigator, which I bought last year. Just needed to disable downloading option from options menu (downloads useless information about close places). So now it's free gps, with Scandinavian maps. If you want to get GPS-phone, get Nokia 6110 Navigator, it's best for the price. (unless iPhone has free maps too)

Oh, and there are some programs for Nokia operating system too. Are there for iPhone?

For example I installed sports tracker on my phone. It uses gps and shows you your avg speed/pace, altitude, time, top speed/pace and everything is saved to the calendar, so you can check out for them later. Tested it on rollerskates and I did 43km/h.

you have to buy the maps for the n95 last time i looked into it it was something like 100euro for the maps on top of that u have to pay for map updates :(

100 euro is not a lot considering GPS devices cost are round that figure. you can also spend 100 euros and get tomtom maps installed on n95. No need for data.

well the n95 is 500 euro plus 100euro for the maps then you have to add in the updates every year which is another hundred euro i think thats quite expensive thats why google maps is great "free" put at present the gps on the iphone is glitchy ive found that the wee gps dot jumps to roads your not on another feature i miss is the route recalculater if u miss ur turn ya have to stop the car to reset it "annoying"

the n95/96 is gps ready there is no preinstalled maps on it an comes at an extra charge. when purchased the maps are preinstalled on the device and does'nt require data downloads gprs,edge,3g as you travel

I get free maps from Nokia Maps Loader. Unless you guys are talking about Voice Navigation, standard navigation on the N95 is free.

probly not, it uses cell towers to see where you are, in the new update for the touch and iphone you might be able to get pre loaded gps onto the ipod touch but its not going to be real time

What's wrong with the 3G iPhone. I personally think the black 3G iPhone looks really cool. Plus it obviously has 3G speeds with built-in GPS and improved batterylife. The audio quality has also supposedly been dramatically improved. PLUS, it's half the price;) I plan on getting the black 16GB 3G iPhone:)

Well... Yeah, I guess I would prefer the aluminum back just because I think it would probably be more durable in the long-run. But the reason the backing is plastic instead of metal is because it would be hard for the iPhone to acquire a GPS signal and I would MUCH rather have GPS But I still think the black looks pretty sick. I just hope it's not the same plastic that they used to make iPods with, especially the black video iPod, it scratched SOOO easily. But I'm sure Apple will make it work;)

the first gen iphone had very bad volume half the time i couldnt hear it ringing they fixed this on the 3g. better battery life improved network network reciever .then there is gps " its ok not great" i found it to be a bit glitchty and still relies on cell phone network to provide the maps which can be expensive when roaming im on the o2 IRE network and am boardering northern Ireland when roaming im charged 10euro a mb .all in all the 3g is a far better phone

there is no third part app at the moment there is rumors that tomtom is making a gps app for the iphone . knowing tomtom i doubt it will be free

the iphone only recieves gps signal it doesnt transmit it so i dont think this is possible although there is a free social networking app called cence me you can download it from the app store for free that records your phones current location and sends that information over ur edge ,3g , or wifi to your facebook and soon myspace profile

3G es suficientemente rapido para los mapas de Google. Con 3G no ocupas wifi. Aunque tienes la opcion de cambiar a wifi donde este disponible.

Assisted GPS ... AGPS is not better.

Assisted GPS sucks battery like no tomorrow...no real NAV assistance. There is very poor accuracy comparison and in remote locations your regular GPS works while assisted is nonexistent.

BUT, I'll give you one thing, when in a deep tunnel or inside a building, AGPS gets better reception. But then WTF would you need GPS for down a 1 way tunnel or inside a building for?

Its easier just to get a garmin chip, but Apple cant add SD chips :(

TomTom is developing software to utilize the AGPS better for iPhone 3G. A lot of what is possible on iPhone is in more software.

70 bucks a month for 450 minutes and unlimited data. You can upgrade for $10 but I'm not sure of everything that's included with that. There's a few good articles about everything at yahoo.
