it's a shame that the international community does not do enough to stop these senseless raids on african people..The african union needs to destroy north sudan for what they are doing to blacks in the south and west.
I dont know what to say, Im in 11 grade & Im now on chapter 24 "They're Alive" I can't wait for the ending. All i can say is for God to forgive them people. & Mende your amazing sister!
I just saw the movie "I am slave". I just want to know if the book version is very different from the movie? In other words, are there more information in the book than the movie?
i read the book and it really is shoking, i knew that slaves were treated poorly but to see someone who went through all this trauma is different, it really changes you...
:( Incredibly sad story, Mende is truly an amazing and strong woman. Can't believe slavery still exists seriously where is the love? Ppl that enslave others will be PUNISH ! I'm really glad that Mende has her happy ending but what will happen to other slaves?...
I have read Mende's book and it has really touched me and opened my eyes to the realities that some people are facing today. It's hard to imagine that slavery still exists today behind closed doors. Her book brought me to tears so many times and the way she describes her family and her old life is so moving. Mende you are truly an inspiration and I hope that life treats you well from now on. God bless you.
I just don't get arabs. I went to Malaysia a few years ago and the arab tourists just treated the hotel staff like shit. It's not because they're not muslim, malaysia is after all a muslim country. It's because they're in the service industry and thus subservient to them. I, as a Westerner, appreciated that they were just doing their jobs and would tip them if they did said jobs well.
Much as Mende's story is shocking, painful and unbelievable, so is the fact that her own family condoned her female genital mutilation. That is just as disgusting as slavery and deserves as much world attention and condemnation as does slavery.
Mende's incredible story is now a play, it opens in Slaford (near Mancheser UK) in 3 weeks and she has helped the Director of Feelgood Theatre Productions to tell her story truthfully and powerfully. Today, Mende campaigns internationally and has started a foundation to build schools in her former village. She is an inspiration, a very brave and positive woman. If you can get to Manchester, see Slave - A Question of Freedom at The Lowry from 23 - 27 November and help Mende build her school.
what happend to the people she was taking captived ? were they fined ? are they in jailed ? and why the British Governement doesnt do a better effort to avoid cruelties like this one. !!! Why not to start investigating much better the Saudis Families who bring aupairs or maids with them ?
I feel so sorry for her, what she went through is unbelievable . I watched her movie on channel 4. So moving, emotional, it brought tears to my eyes. I don't understand how people could be so cruel. Although what her dad did was amazing beiling she was still alive. god bless her and all those who are you going through that.xx
Just watched the documentary on channel 4 today, titled I am slave, it brought tears to my eyes, can't believe there are human beings that would treat another human being especially a child the way they treated this lady. I was very pleased when she had the courage to escape, I googled her name and came across this youtube clip. Well done and I hope other slaves in this country have the courage to escape and be human again
@cherrycake2 I stopped watching that documentary half way through as i was very close to being sick. It's just disgusting how slavery still happens in our world.
@Yunghamz I know it is very sickening, I watched dispatches UK secret slaves before I am slave came on, it was very shocking to learn how the wealthy in the UK practice in cruelty to other humans, it annoyed me when in dispatches a Philippines lady wanted her pp back but her former employer refused to give it, then another former employer tried to attack another Philippine victim. Think the law in this country needs to change for diplomats as well, as it seems they can't be touched
I finished reading the book too. Mende is an incredible woman! It brought tears to my eyes when I was reading how you tried to escape from that Arabic household. Those people hv no justice and are uncivilized and the way they think is stupid and unacceptable. They should stay in jail for the rest of their lives.
I read her book. I cannot believe how she was treated, I mean I had an idea, I think everyone has heard of slavery. Though how on earth can anyone justify it?! We should all be considered equal. Mende Nazer is a very brave woman.
I just finished reading the book - how horrific. Mende is such a strong woman. I hope she has been able reunite with her family. It's so awful this happened not even all that long ago. I can't stop from saying, what an absolutely incredibly strong woman she is.

Mende Nazer is a beautiful, strong person whom is like a hero or rolemodel to me. The way she is so honest, and feels a responsibility to use her voice to help those who cannot let theirs be heard... I chose to use her story for a oral speech in literature 4 years ago in 11th grade. I put my heart into this speech, it is called "prisoner of circumstance." a classmate of mine said "that really moved me" after I finished my speech. I sometimes think I feel exactly how she does. love is the answer.
just finished reading this book slavery is terrible. i hope mende is reunited back with her family again. she is very brave well done for everything u have acheived mende :-)
It is SO terrible that slavery is permitted in the bible and the QU'ran. The horror of this is indescribable. More than anything this says that we should abandon these faiths, they are not faiths for our times. They all come from the semitic peoples in the Middle East. So full of contradictions, these 'holy books' . The misery that they have caused..
It is so hard to listen to the Arabic people carrying on about the 'fairness' of Islam when they treat people like this. And she is a Muslim and her 'master' in the book said she 'couldnt be a muslim because she was too black!' Christianity used to do this too, but they have seen the error of their ways. But I dont think Christians used to say a black person couldnt be a Christian because of their skin colour. It is very evil and doesnt help my opinion of those people.
I read the book for school and it is the only book i finished in 17 years of my life cause i couldnt stop reading till she experienced freedom!! mende is one of the strongest people i ever seen.. im not a girl and im not gay and if my friends see this comment they would call me a fag or a pussy lol but whatever...
It's the reason why Arabic people Islamic people practiced so much slavery on black people:black women for every arbic islamic men(the quran legalizes this)and califes'harem, little black children castrated worked in Islamics armies(Ottomans, fatimides,Abbassides,Hassanides)during 1400 years!
Nothing melende1966!Arab is the first people to practice the black slavery by Islam on all lands of Africa:Sudan(Bilad-as-Sudan:Land of black people),Swahili Coast(Zendjis means black slaves in 7th to 11th century in Abbassides empire and Perse islamic empire gives his name to Zanzibar),Ghana empire,Mali,Nigeria(West Sudan,Democratic republic of Congo(Nyangwé,Kivu,Kasai),Mozambique,Tchad(Ouaddai)!
Arab people is so leazy that he can't live without slaves!
I have read the book and cannot believe that these people are allowed to treat other human beings in this way. Disgusting. You are a credit Mende and a true example of strength. Whilst no doubt you will never forget your past I wish you a happy, fulfilling and healthy life. God bless x

Her book is just amazing, this has become one of my favourite ones. Besides this books is based on a true story. It's shocking and make you value what you have, the family around you, your freedom and even the simpliest things in life. This book has opened up my eyes and realize that sometimes we complain about insignificant things that may be even more insignificant to others who are in devastating situations in life.
I've just finished reading the moving story of this incredibly resilient woman. I pray that your life continues to improve and may God grant you serenity in this life and the next. You are so brave and inspiring and deserve every ounce of happiness you get. I will never forget your story.
Mende you are an inspiration and certainly someone who has me looking at my life whenever times get hard and realising just how lucky i am. Your strength is something only your allah could possibly bring you. I pray you will be reunited with your family again.
Having just finished Mende's book like so many others that have written comments, I feel so sad. I am a similar age to Mende and I have been thinking about all the wonderful fun, friends and family filled experienced I was having as she was growing up in hell. I have nothing to complain about - ever. Mende's life has given me perspective on my own life as well as a huge respect for a strong brave woman. May Mende have great happiness in her life and meet her family again one day soon.

to think them dirty so-called arab's are enslaving the great nubian's! this must be stopped and them so-called arab's should be kick out of nubia back to arabia!
Mende, i just finished reading your book, and i'm writing an essay on you. And i think you're the most amazing person and one of the strongest. I cannot believe the terrible things you went through when you were enslaved. I think you're amazing. I dont know what else to say. May you live a great life:)
Mende i admire u sooooooooooo much. I just finished reading your book. beautiful, beautiful book! unbelievably true! i am so proud that brave ppl like u exist. u r a beautful person who wil go farhter than u already have. god u and ur family
I feel you sister. I hate arabs they go to sudan and rape steal and kill africans. Because africans let it happen because we don't like are selfs.Africans need to unite as one against the white race who rape and steal from us.
the book is sooo sad, i cried.. i don't know how many times. Good luck with your life now Mende i hope that you and your family are okey.Ypu are sooo strong. Love
To the person who said this was not true as one paper was being sued for libel and had to withdraw the story- this never went to court so it is Mendes word against theirs. Mende doesnt have proof. Not having the proof doesnt mean it didnt happen- just means that many guilty people are allowed to hide behind our legal system (designed to protect only the innocent) which unfortunately has too many flaws for todays society. Its a disgrace that slavery continues to this day.I had no idea!!
the book doesnt really show her face (though i stared for a long time). but this woman is beautifu. inside and out- and she deserves nothing but the best, for her, her family and her tribe. nuba people must be given back what is still repeatedly stolen from them.
what are you talking about? dude, if other people can make billions then why cant i? and im sure if i do get rich then i can spare it to poor people! and if your so quick to dis my attitude, you better take a look at yours buddy.
I just finished the book and I can't believe slavery still exists, there were moments in the book where I was crying. I am so happy Mende is free now, it is a well deserve FREEDOM.

Stop crying and save your tears because this story is full of rubbish, how can a slave girl travel to london to serve some one??? after London's Sunday Telegraph printed in September 2000 a second-hand account of Nazer's experience as a slave in Al-Koronky's household, the diplomat sued the paper for libel. In July 2002, before the case went to trial, the paper retracted its story and agreed to pay damages .
read the BOOK you idiot then you will understand how she came in london you just don't get IT the next time you type something about here make sure you read the book
actually its true, we are learnin bout that in skl her book is called 'SLAVE' she was kidnapped by arabs and her parents were killed, so spare a space in ur heart for her she went through a lot,if u read the book then it will tell u the story of why she came to london
I read this book a few years ago, I don't remeber if she mentioned what happened to the people who took her "captive" so to speak...does any body know?
I was amazed at Mende's account. The dates she offered were a real reality check, but especially the account of the new millennium party. I remember exactly what I was doing that night, and it was shocking to realize that I, like the rest of the world, was so oblivious to mende's suffering while we went about our daily lives.
i read her book months ago.. those funny childhoold memories she talked about was really nice but when the raid came, it was really terrible. just hope that things are getting good for mende and her family. NO MORE slavery!
I couldn't put Mende's book down. Not only because i was in utter disbelief over these terrible crimes -but- because I truely felt like I was abandoning her. Every time a date was mentioned, I was automatically taken back to what I was doing at that time. I am embarressed over the sheer ignorance of how I was going about the supposed dramas of my life at a time Mende & so so many others were, & still are, suffering so badly!!! Iam forever affected for hearing your story Mende... God Bless.
I've just read her book for the second time, and still find it so shocking that this all happened just years ago. I again realise how lucky I am to be living in such a free beautiful country as New Zealand. Geez she's a strong woman.
Mende Nazer a modern day slave, boy I can't believe that this type of thing (slavery) is still going on in our world, but it exists and it is real and after I read the book slave (mende nazers story) I felt truly sad but happy that she escaped. The name Mende Nazer shall remain in my memory banks forever and her words on our freedom "how we take it for granted" I shall never forget.
I can't put the url or an e-mail address on here (it won't let me) so read this out loud to yourself and use it as an address: youthmapping (all one word) at hotmail dot co dot uk Thanks!

And the worst is that slavery continues to exist not only in Africa, but in many other countries, such as Brazil, for instance.

the book doesnt really show her face (though i stared for a long time). but this woman is beautifu. inside and out- and she deserves nothing but the best, for her, her family and her tribe. nuba people must be given back what is still repeatedly stolen from them.

it makes me sad to think how many people are still in slavery at this very moment, like little Nanu for example!
when grow up, i will donate heaps and heaps of money towards anti slavery!!

That's said it all.

I really hope rahab and all the people involved in this get what they deserve.
She is such a wonderful person, i cant imagine anyone acting that way towards her.
I hope she got/gets to see her family.

God Bless Mende Nazer
