@JSLegoMaster its like it infact the trapdoor was also a conversion when it first came out thay converted muzzleloaders but thay had to reline the barrels to .50-70 and then in the .45-70
FYI: I've seen several over the years that have split at the breech half way between mouth of chamber and back of receiver. I have some custom factory rounds $6/each. What size ball w/ 28ga load? .577 (like for a .58cal Enfield, Zouve or Springfield) Also do you use a filler? Thx
@cleoshepardchou I seldom shoot the 28/24ga loads anymore. I custom make my own rounds from magtech 24ga Brass. I use 85gr powder and a newsprint wad. The only Snider's I have ever heard of having a failure is the Mark1 and MarkII (probably due to the Iron barrel) I have a Mark III (steel barrel)
@fishblade2 Its definitely less accurate. It also depends on the care you take when cutting them down. I am sure if I took the time and didn't use a boxcutter to size them with I would have better results lol :) However that's not what "I" use them for. I use them for cheap fun ;)
Really enjoy your videos. I think Jacob Snider (the designer of the original mod for the Snider Enfield) is a long-ago relative of mine. I need to find one of these. Any sources left...at a decent price?
It is the British Army's first metallic cartridge rifle from the 1800's. The first ones were factory conversions of the muzzle-loading Enfield rifled musket that our own CSA smuggled in in large numbers from Britain in the Civil War.
The Snider was a stopgap measure that was soon replaced by the Martini-Henry rifle.
@murpheysmuskets Good to see other people embracing the holy black. I do a lot of work with mil surps, but my my true love for guns is in the transitional era, where most of the coolest technology came and went in the blink of an eye it seems.
found out the designer Jacob Snider may be a relative of mine. I have to get one of these now. Any thoughts on the recent Snider's IMA is offering for $350? Worthy of restoration? If not, thoughts on where to find one?
@fishblade2 no replicas of the snider rifle only real deals the ones at IMA are made in nepal although thay do follow the mk 3 type breech block witch is a bit stronger theres always the chance of getting a non shooter (ie somethings wrong with it) when buying a untouched gun
So, when are you going to make yourself a blow tube for the gun since you're firing so much ? You know how to make them, right ? The blow tube is used to blow moisture into the breach to soften fouling between shots.
@downeastgunworks to be honest the brass shells seal the chamber off perfectly :) The only time the whole day of shooting that I got fouling in the chamber was when I had one of the necks split.
Damn. This makes me miss having my old carbine version of the Snyder. So I suppose you know I'll have to call IMA and get a musket version now. I saw a few posted there for around $ 500 - $550
@downeastgunworks it all depends on the condition. If you buy one that's still preserved in yak fat they are in the $300+ range. You have to do a lot of cleaning but so far everybody seems really satisfied. If you're willing throw some coin at it buy a British Snider. Also check your pms, I have a proposition for you.
Damn fine shooting! Great vid! Shame about the split case. 6:35 Beastliness! HRUMMPFH! I'm going to have to show you how a Matchlock shoots once my rotator cuff injury heals up. Beastly indeed! They are elegant engines of destruction!
@Teleoceras Sorry about your injury man. I hope you get well soon!!! But ya you mean to say your actually gonna upload a shooting vid??? BTW you should get yourself a Snider (its not .69cal) and every black powder collection needs one :)
@murpheysmuskets Yes, I've figured out how to do one at my local range without showing my face. This Summer has been BRUTAL on my finances. Except for the 8 bore Matchlock which already has a deposit down, my gun buying has to be put on hold. Plus why do I need a Snider when I already have a Trapdoor. :P
@Teleoceras LOL, because man every black powder enthusiast needs a Snider!!!! They're just so sexy. Mine only weighs 7Ibs.....I am definitely looking forward to those shooting vids!
@murpheysmuskets I disagree, if it is BPCR, then my passion runs with the Trapdoors, not the Sniders. But then again, with the front stuffers, I'm more of a Handgonne \ Matchlock guy as well.
@DoughboyJonesmk2 Yeah, I was ticked when I saw it come out of the die, especially since this kind of casing can last practically forever if you're careful.
im loving this rifle, and all of your old rifles that you dont see that often. I must say you have a great rifle collection. thank you for sharing it with all of us.
This is very simlar working as the Trapdoor rifle, only difference beeing that this opens at the side, trapdoor up front.

How accurate is the shotgun shells cut down compared to the brass you reload?
