I also got caught by surprise 3 weeks ago by a rain-wrapped tornado which was passing through a field on the side of the road. I had to leave my car and take shelter behind an empty school. I did not see it until it was next to me. Scary as hell!!! I was so glad after it passed over because at the time I had no idea how strong it was or what kind of damage it would do. It turned out to be pretty weak but it was still very scary, expecially when you are alone.

Thanks for putting the clarifications in the middle, I just wish there was a way to have not blocked the picture, but I read the other comments and see why it was necessary. I had a buddy from high school who was shooting this from farther away, and from his angle you can barely tell it was still a tornado, so I can see how it snuck up on you with all those trees. WOW! Glad you were ok!

The chaser here is right, a tornado can turn right, and just to add to it, I wouldn't be surprised if the thunderstorm itself turned right. I watched a thunderstorm turn right and went after it, and because I chose that paticular storm, I caught the tornado which spawned in Kay Co. Ok by the town of Lamont. Turned out to be a fairly strong tornado. This is one of 5 tornadoes that spawned in OK on May 13, 2009. I see some others had videoed that tornado too by going to you tube.Hwy 60was my local

sure, the rotating air circulation extends outward from the actual visible center of the funnel - doppler radar seems to indicate that the highest wind velocity is about 10 feet off the ground at the bottom edge of the visible vortex, and if you'd gotten that close it would have thrown your car into the air - some day we'll see a video directed upward into the center of the funnel, but until then I freely admit that you were in the tornado - a lesson to others, the winds get bad that close

Close calls are becoming the norm. Perhaps you might consider slowing down, next time you see debris... while driving on a sloppy farm road? Or, you could just blame the close call on the "right mover". This was a screw up.

I never claimed it to not be a screw up, infact if you read the annotation and the description you would clearly see that it states I made a mistake and that the tornado had turned to the right as it previously had been moving due east. I was driving at that brisk pace on that road trying to get to one about a mile ahead that cut south so that I could have tried to avoid that I could attempt to avoid what in fact did happen.

I didn't have to be on the phone with the EMS since I had electronically submitted a spotter report online which gets to the NWS just as quickly and the buddy I was on the phone with was the chief meteorologist with the local station I chase for and he was talking via Iwarn with local net controllers.

It was not a half mile wide at this point it was just a 100yards at the most and kirksville is in a radar hole and as the tornado roped out it turned hard to the SE cutting me off. I had very limited road options and originally before the tornado changed direction and was a wedge I had been a mile to its south.
