Thanks for the review.. It helped alot. I have tried usb capture and all sorts of other capture card. Sync is a real problem. This card does the trick..
What advantage does the Canopus ADVC-55 (about $200) have over other products like the Elgato Video capture (about $100) and the EasyCAP DC60 (about $10) aside from the fact that the Elgato & EasyCAP's outputs are USB 2.0 instead of Firewire?
@tjsalo2001 You have done a good job in reviewing the AVC-55 and your information compliments this guy who is an excellent, to the point reviewer. YouTube Link - w20j6BvmxOs
Hi ColonelAngus75 - I've got an ADVC-55 to convert Hi8 tape content from my Sony TRV66E Camcorder, but what capture software do you recommend I use on my laptop PC? Corel VideoStudio 12 doesn't seem to work. I can't seem to download trial versions of CyberLink Power Director 9 or Adobe Premier Elements 9 and I don't really want to buy full versions of either of these packages until I know they convert correctly. Please help Colonel - you're my last hope. Many thanks in advance.
Does anybody know if the Canopus ADVC-55or (ADVC-10) will work for connecting the video camera to use the image as it comes through? We would not be capturing anything from the tape but use it for livestreamcom...
@skotte28 - We have been testing the ADVC-55 for Live Capturing for Churches with limited budget. It streams well on a MacBook Pro and we are currently testing with Windows 7. Our first test with a full size PC worked good, but our Test with a smaller PC desktop show some artifacting and lack of clarity. We are testing a MacMini today and I think it will work well. I have not determined if the Video Card in the PC or Mac plays a role in the quality that is streamed. YourHost.com
If you have the composite cables for the 360 you could plug those into the converter, but it would be tough to play the game because there's a bit of a delay in the preview window. My TV has composite output jacks so I hook those up to the converter when I record video games so I don't have any delay.
That's weird then. I don't have a 360 to test with so I don't know what the problem could be unless it uses some kind of copy protection. I've heard that if you flip the number 6 switch on the converter that will cause it to ignore copy protection, so maybe give that a try.
Question, Hopefully you can help! I want to convert VHS-C tapes from an old Panasonic Palmcorder, the problem is that it only comes with an A/V output cable which would be the WHITE and YELLOW cables, do i need to have the third RED CABLE? is so what for? Could I buy another output cable that has all 3 for me to use? thanks any info is greatly appreciated!
The red and white cables are for stereo audio, the yellow is for video. You can convert without the red cable but the sound will only come out of one speaker. Depending on what editing software you're using it should be possible to fix that.
Also, regarding DV compression, the bitrate for DV is 25 mbps/sec which is over 2.5x that of the maximum DVD video bitrate, so I think it is very sufficient for anything lower than HD material.
I used the advc55 to transfer Laserdisc > PC > DVD via S-video.
It's the most simple video device i've ever used and quality is outstanding (If you don't mind the slight DV compression). I use WinDV to capture and TMPGEnc 4 Xpress for simple editting and mpeg2 encoding.
The preview of what is being captured probably won't play any sound (depends on what program you use to capture with) but the saved file should have sound.
Programs like Windows Movie Maker and Pinnacle Studio don't play sound while you're capturing video from FireWire (but be assured, audio WILL be captured). The only program that I know of that plays audio while you're capturing is Sony Vegas Pro.
Even industry-standard editors like Avid Media Composer and Final Cut don't play sound while you're capturing.
well i got the firewire connect into it and the s-video works only thing is that the sound doesn't work. is there some software or anything i can do? thanks for the help

what is quality? 720*480? or who?
luisa548 3 months ago
@luisa548
It captures at 720 x 480 in NTSC mode. I'm not sure what it captures at when in PAL or SECAM mode.

Probably the only real advantage would be the ADVC-55 can work on very slow computers. If I knew then what I know now I wouldn't have bought it.

@R123456789R1000
I just used the built-in Windows DV capture utility to capture the video. Plug in the ADVC-55 and it should ask if you want to capture video.

How do you capture Xbox 360 gameplay?

@ColonelAngus75 The converter just has a red light so it won't import/ show gameplay.

Will the converter work with something else, like a DVD player?
