Space exploration has been ongoing for more than 50 years now, and no benefits have yet been seen. I'm not saying we should stop exploring space, but i don't see why we should spend billions trying to study origin of universe when there are sick and dying people all over the world.

Saying "for man" could also mean "for mankind" or "for man as a species" (which was of course not correct, as the intention was to make the contrast with "a giant leap for mankind"). I rhink he can be excused under the circumstances though!
