I swear I might shoot myself the next time you say "open a history book". And okay, you're right, the purgatory doctrine has been around since the early church. However (here's where I entertain your damned need for a history book citation), according to A History of Western Society by McKay, the a significant amount of emphasis (FAR greater than before) had been placed on the doctrine during the selling of indulgences. And, be that as it may, purgatory isn't even Biblical.
Obviously I'm not going to initially pour my evidences into a YouTube comment. And don't just assume I'm drawing upon biased documentaries. I'm no historian but I've taken AP European history and know a thing or two about the subject. First of all, in my opinion, the Catholic church was wrong (and essentially corrupt) in seeking and/or maintaining secular power (which I believe is a result of worldly desire which they were incapable of overcoming).
I shake my head at the catholic church, corrupt for most of it's history, save its humble beginning. Even the purgatory doctrine was conjured so the church could make a quick buck.
@ProvokingYoVillian Open a history book, don't just rely on documentaries and biased English points of view. The Church was never 'corrupt'. The stereotypical 'corrupt' Church is utter nonsense. Yes, there were some corrupt individuals within the Church, a minority I might add, but that in no way justifies calling the entire Church 'corrupt'. Purgatory has always been believed. As I said before, stay off the anti-catholic sources, it was not 'made up', or to 'make a quick buck'.
@assasincomedy Secondly, the purgatory was not "always believed". When the Catholic churched relocated temporarily to Avignon in France (Late Middle Ages), it was cut off from Roman estates and was in need of funds. Pope Clement VI began selling indulgences and to make this more enticing to the layman, the church introduced the purgatory doctrine. People could buy reduced purgatory sentences for themselves or their loved ones. It was a gimmick.
@ProvokingYoVillian You are seriously mis-informed. Purgatory was always believed, otherwise it would of not fit the requirements for being proclaimed doctrine anyway. Yes, there were some abuses concerning the selling of indulgences, for building St Peters Basilica for example, but these were eradicated through the Council of Trent. As I said earlier, open a history book, and perhaps a theology book aswell, if you don't want to look like an utter fool when discussing Church history.
Quit defending the Catholic Church! They are guilty of genocide, child-molestation, and a host of other SINS (like not paying taxes) I have NO respect for a religion that inflicts GUILT on its followers. I am so lucky NOT to be a papist. I am a happy heretic -- and proud of it! Now try and burn me -- and see how far you get!
@gentelc We do defend the Church established by Christ. You cannot take the example of Bloody Mary and generalize all Catholics the same. She did not represent the Church.
@westchesterny, well ! that is your opinion , l suggest that you travel around the world a lot more . you have lot to learn ! many peoples are being manipulated have a predisposition , if you are the type of person who believe blindly almost anything without asking question , maybee you have a problem !!!!!!
Anyway a opinion is like a asshole , .. everybody got one.
It is right, they denied the pope and his welfare-state collection of their livlihood, that they made with the hearts, hands, minds that God, himself, had bestowed on them and given them to work with. Crowns and gowns fighting over slaves, lol .
@bloggingbaptist American Hollywood churns out anti-Protestant, propaganda (under the GUISE of "anti-southern" anti-appalachian, anti-hoosier, flyover country, blah, blah---degradation of anyone who doesn't want the Catholic (South) border open to end protestant life in the u.s. (genuine, where you can actually talk theology, not the "church of the nice people" tolerance stuff. Fox's book of martyrs isn't even known in u.s. now, kids are not told. Mary was the least of it.
and now its coming all back again in history I wonder if there will be a repeat because the anglican church is joining ith the roman catholic church its only a matter of time.

@APhilCollinsFan Actually, education IS manipulation, lol. wake up. The most "educated" are educated into whatever state power wishes them to see, to think, to know, to justify, and so on. Wouldn't put much faith in Mommy Professors.
@bloggingbaptist You idiot it was the catholics that murdered the protestants, not other way around and 6 ppl just went right along with you and gave you thumbs up. I guess they can't read no more than you can. Catholics are the church of thyritira in the Bible they are the only ones going into the tribulation. Read Your BIBLE
@tornadotoz It is discusting the things the catholics did when they had all the power. JESUS never wanted anyone to act like this. The nicolatians, the church of thyatira, with that wicked woman Jezebel.
Aunque parezca raro, la gente misericordiosa arrojaba leña verde al fuego con la esperanza de que las víctimas murieran primero asfixiadas por el humo.
Elizabeth executed hundreds of Catholics by beheading or drawing and quartering. Her own doctor was put to death because they doubted his conversion from Judaism. And while the Spanish did try to invade England, they were goaded into it when Elizabeth hired privateers to attack Spanish ships, kill the sailors and steal the gold.
@mst3k4evur Ok, thank you for that, it's quite interesting to know. So why then during the Stuart age did the English see Elizabeths rule as the 'golden age'?
England gained prestige, power and wealth. None of which require your leader to be nice. That, and the mood was very anti-Catholic, so I doubt their persecution bothered many people.
@mst3k4evur Actually, according to the film about ageing Elizabeth - Essex lied about her doctor, not Elizabeth's fault but her ministers believed Essex's lie and put him to death.
Depends on which historian you ask, some say the story about poison was just to make the execution look justified. Still, the fact is she knew his character and had the power to save him.
@mst3k4evur True but her ministers never told her about the charges imposed on the doctor and by the time they told her it was too late cos the doctor was already dead and she was furious when she learnt the truth.
She then threw Essex out of her court and apologised to the doctor's family as according to he film.
Elizabeth I persecuted Catholics just as cruelly as her half sister, Mary, persecuted the Protestants...Many Catholics were tortured to death in the most horrific manners under the reign of Elizabeth I. As you know, victors always have the dominant voice in history and England is a Protestant nation.
First of all Catholics do not pray to the saints and angels. They do ask the saints to pray with them to God. If we believe that there is no death for Christians but we go from this mortal world to imortality then we must believe that those who have gone before us are asking God to help those left.
Next, Catholics were not the only nasty ones. Henry had many killed for the sake of Anglinism. So both sides are quilty of murder.
The Catholic vs Protestant wars of the Reformation are the BLOODIEST history of Europe indeed of all human history. To say that the protestants were victims alone is BS! They were both slaughtering each other by 10s of thousands this is documented fact. The real villian to blame is religion! It has done more harm to human race then any other thing!
Check out the execution of rebels against the State (Protestant) Church by hanging, drawing and quartering, etc. during the reigns of Henry VIII and Elizabeth 1.
