Johnny Depp's great, but he's too old to play any of the Beatles during their hey-day. There are plenty of good to great movies already out about the band--the best approach is to take a thin slice of the story. Trying to cover the whole sweep from Hamburg to the break-up in a 2-3 hour feature film would require enormous condensing. Better to entice HBO to produce a 10-12 hour miniseries--they have a reputation for handling mature subject matter in a classy, Beatles-worthy manner.

Depp playing Derek Taylor might work very well--a movie that focused on Apple, with the Beatles rarely if ever seen on screen, would be a fresh and interesting approach to a Beatles movie--much more interesting (and feasible) than trying to do some sweeping, traditional biopic like Gandhi. Thanks for setting me straight.

I know now that the speculation was for Depp to play Derek Taylor, and for the film to focus on Apple rather than on trying to tell the whole Beatles' story--both ideas are good ones, and I hope that movie gets made.

I'll stand by my suggestion that an HBO miniseries would be the best venue for a dramatization of the entire Beatles story.
