I did the alagash solo, one fall, from the beginning of the river, to the end where it meets the St John river. It took 3 days taking my time, only saw two people on the river. Saw 56 mooses and 2 deere. At times I would pass a moose in the river as close as 10 feet. Lots of cyotes at night, hundreds howling, they put you to sleep. And no, no gun, no need for one in the Maine woods unless your hunting, or are around the more dangerous animal, human.
