  • My favorite jazz song ever, and this is one of my favorite versions. Thx for posting.

  • smooth & tender

  • Kudos to a great download. Hadn't literally heard this track in decades. To quote from Mash(the book), "Finest kind!"

  • Beauty !!!!

I'm going to steal "Stolen Moments" and write arrangement of this tune for my combo class. Thank you so much alhajem !!!

  • @rickjames Dollar Brand=Abdullah Ibrahim

  • Fanstastic color and sensitivity! Quiet yet powerful!

  • Once i find out to down load music from youtube & put it on a disc or other format, I'm going to put this into my 67 Mercury & drive, cruise & when i pump gas, it's going to be heard. Wow, this stuff on the radio makes my hair come out, & I'm BALD!

  • @rickames There is a free software called Audacity. It works g8. I've used it for quite sometime without it causing any problems to my pc. It's a monster program the price is right. Basically you record in real time, save it as an mp3 to your hdd, then burn your cd's. There are plenty of tutorials so you'll be okay. You can record radio, from a turntable, mikes etc. There is video capturing software that"s good, but you would have to convert the .flv to .wav or mp3. Hope the info helps.

  • @vinyltapelover You are my hero, I will keep this info in a folder so i can take the time & try this. You must be like me, a ' Duke Blue Devil fan..lol. Thanks for your info. Don't share this with the Tarheels, sorry, I love college ball. Thanks again.

  • @rickames "Don't share this with the Tarheels,..." No problem, we'll just keep it between u and I. No way word will get to a Tarheel:). I like college ball just no time 2 follow it. Speaking of "Blue Devils,"Google" for a video, with Count Basie and others, called " Last of the Blue Devils". produced by Clint Eastwood, who you may know is a jazz afficianado. It's worth watching. 1 more tool 4 ur folder: "Prism Video Converter" by NCH. If u want to p.m. me for followup, let me know.

  • @vinyltapelover I'm from NC, I am going to school to become a 'Chef'. I pray & hope to the ' Lord' I will graduate & be a sucess. Thanks for your replies, sounds like to me you're a ' brain' or you are very fluent in ' computers'. I like ' Jazz', some of it sounds like ' elevator music' with a beat. I like music i can feel, examples: Kirk Whalum, Gerald Albright, Tom Grant, Joe Sample, Mike Phillips, etc. I'm sure you're familar with some of the artist. Hey, bless you I'm a Christian! Be blessd

  • This is mastery and perfection! He sounds really like McCoy Tyner here with those modal chords and solos - a sound I love. I'm only 16 but I'm obsessed with jazz. I haven't listened to enough of Ahmad Jamal, but having heard this I think he's going to become someone I listen to a lot in the future. Thank you alhajem for giving us all the opportunity to hear this beautiful tune and inspiring me to listen to more of Jamal's music!

  • @JNatLT

Ty JNatLT Nice to hear that. You're choosing the right way.

  • @alhajem : Cheers, the only way is jazz for me!

  • @alhajem Thumbs up to your reply. Nice way to put it too, "you're choosing the right way."

  • @alhajem BTW, who's on bass and on drums? Thanks :-)

  • @JNatLT I got turned on to him when I was 16 too, that was 48 years ago, I guess he's got staying power, huh ?

    val

  • @valedwardsmusic : That's an awesome coincidence. Yeah absolutely, I hope that I get into Jamal enough to remember him when I'm older.

  • look for Bill Evans my friend

  • @JNatLT Decades ago I started listening to jazz at about 13. There is no upper or lower age limit to jump in, but now that you are here, welcome. You are just widening your musical horizons. Enjoy.

  • @JNatLT if you are so obsessed the get a keyboard and play the hell out of it

  • @JNatLT any way do you know what modes are?

  • Awesome.TY alhajem for posting

  • das will i bei meinem begräbnis

  • I was lucky enough to hear him play (twice the same evening) at the Blues Alley in Georgetown a few years ago. AMAZING. Better yet, I ended up bar-hopping with Mr Jamal after his concerts. Unforgettable experience.

  • @cbalmori

    I'm jealous

  • @cbalmori yea right bro

  • @frostytoes686 True story. He is an amazingly warm-hearted guy

  • Just KICKING it with the BEATNIKS~

  • totally amazing!!!

  • Like the way Frank Z played it in combination with Murder by Numbers but they don't make players like Jamal any more, not even in stolen moments. Great. Thanks

  • Welcome back to the essence.

  • 2:33 YEAAHHHH!!! That is why I love jazz!

  • smoothe as velvet.

  • @fign2345 - Are you Manolo Badrena??? If so, I love your playing on Steve Khan's "Blades (for Wayne Gretzky)". That is one of my favorite albums--with Steve Jordan and Anthony Jackson--you guys sound amazing on that record!

  • Very classy.

  • :-)

  • ahmad jamal is the most important creative artist of the siecle...xx xxi

  • I love how he builds this performance himself. Stating the intro and melody simply but with great dynamics. Then his first solo is chordal --- mostly altering the harmony while still following the gist of the form, then more traditional bop oriented soloing with left hand accompaniment. Then his cadenza (if you want to call it that) at the end recapitulates his first few choruses. Not sure if this analysis actually helps anyone enjoy this ... Thanks.

  • He is kicking @ss on the piano. Great recording. Powerful. Love that drum pattern in the intro.

  • Love his vibe! Satin smooth!

  • yes...love his vibe. i can listen all day. ;)

  • stolen moments are worth stealing to listen to this. thankyou ALHAJEM for your video.

  • This it's just grabbed me and just gave me a big cuddle. This is just MMMmmmmm

first time ever What a sound

  • Never heard of him, i see pictures of him from the past. He's been around for a while. I'd like to welcome you to introduce me to great jazz artist. I like: Joe Sample, Gerald Albright and a few more. But in the area of NC i like we're not introduced to jazz or have stations around here. I'm open for suggestions, thanks. This guy sounds good.

  • @rickames we've played in NC before at UNC Chapel Hill, ECU, UC Ashville and Charolette ( The jazz fest ) and at some art center that was once a church, it was located downtown, I think.. This was back in the 80's.

  • @fign2345 We, what's the name of your group, & do you have audio?

  • @rickames You were listening to our group, Ahmad Jamal. I was his percussionist , off and on, for almost 16 years. So I knew all of the guys that played with Ahmad.

  • @fign2345 Wow, that's impressive, thanks for the post. Are there any other artist that are smooth, adrenian pumping, bob, etc?

  • @rickames dollar brand from africa is similar also magical.he has another name which will come up when you do a search.

  • alhajem , exactly - and that is one one the best LP's ever by the greatest eternalist ahmad jamal

  • He starts in C# minor as it was written then does some solos in something like an A flat

the guy is wonderfully creative he can do anything with anything and make it interesting

  • @BrianGValentine Actually, it was written in C minor, and he plays it here solely in C minor.

  • @snaaptaker

I guess it depends on whose transcription one views

mine for winds starts in B maj and changes to C-#min

It's very nice though, I think Jamal gives Nelson and Freddie Hubbard for that matter a lasting tribute

I wonder if Jamal knew Oliver Nelson? - probably he did

  • he says so much with very few notes an a lot of silence.

  • no "wave" on here (my favourite from this album), no "The Essence" either...

  • can u believe that i found awakenings LP!! in a charity shop.. apparently it's the most sampled record of all time in hip hop....

  • i think kerri chandler sampled the beginning part of this track.

  • beautiful!!!!

  • absolutely wonderful stuff! ! from the gentle touch to those fat chords . . .masterful!!!!

  • This album, and especially this song, is absolutely the greatest. Thanks for posting!

  • The only version that can tip this is Grover Washington in 88 -- awesome RIP

  • What amazing playing. No matter how often I hear his work, it never gets old.

  • One of the most interesting players in modal tunes.

  • simply beautiful

  • how good is that???

  • My second favorite song of all the things I have heard by him, and he is one of my favorites. My favorite is his version of "My One and Only Love" from this album.

  • My One and Only Love is from a another aAlbum

    The Awakening:

    1 The Awakening

    2 I love music

    3 Patterns

    4 Dolphin dance

    5 You'r my everything

    6 Stolen moments

    7 Wave

  • You're right. It's from and album called "Stepping Out with a Dream" which has a copyright date of 1976. Thanks for the heads up.

  • I can't argue with you on this one. I absolutely love this album along with Coleman Hawkins' Today and Now album and of course Miles' Kind of Blue

  • This is one of the best tunes I have ever heard! I love when he quotes the melody at 3:20, beautiful.
