This is without a doubt one of the most sophisticated yet joyous yet bluntly disparaging songs in the world. Hell, it may even be the best. No wonder The Kinks never charted -- they're the best fucking band of all time.
@firstcat No man, there is a plodding optimism that shines through. That's the beauty of The Kink's music. It's the art that's important, not the money. That's what kept them goming. Blacklisted by unions, concept album phase, etc. True artists create because they are compelled to. Years after a lesser man might have had nothing to say, or had been beaten down, or decided to rest on their laurals and enjoy their success Ray still had something to say in a way that makes you feel good.
@sirmelancholia. Yeah, same here. The remarkable thing is it is live and unproduced and you hear all the character inflections in the way he sings it. The frustration, exasperation, the sheer injustice. Funny & sad all rolled into one. And a real symbol of Ray's genius.
There will never be another band like the KinKs - God save them, forever, they are not like everybody else, and neither are their loyal fans who have stood by them and supported them through the years! - dan the fan, the Montvale, New Jersey Hillbilly Boy, aka Frank Lima
great fucking album. although, while this song may be representing disillusionment with 'pop world' i'd have to say that "powerman" is actually powerful indictment of capitalist self interest while "shangri la" is its vacuous result. great songs
The sad part is that Ray eventually had to settle out of court with Kassner for a paltry sum, because Kassner wore him out with appeals. Even though Ray's legal team were pretty sure they were right, there was always the risk they'd lose an expensive appeal, and Ray was thinking about being able to support his family.
The names he mentions (Robert, Grenville and Larry) are real people and were part of their management team. Ray has brassy ones for sure. I recommend Ray's autobiography called "X-Ray" from 1994 if you haven't read it yet. Excellent book.
yeah he seems like a wacky fellow, interesting to read about. i love the look on his face and the way he says "adored my instrumentals" lol! great song
One of the funniest and most bitter songs ever written about the music industry. It was so daring Ray named the culprits too... Wace and Grenville were not at all amused when they first heard this!
i read it in some book about bands from the 60s and one of the little blurbs was talking about how ppl like george harrison, rick wright, and dave davies for example, made big contributions to the music of the bands they were in but never got credit because they didn't actually write the lyrics, which is lame, because the feel of the music was really important to all three of those bands
I think you're confusing writing music with arranging and transcriptions. Dave was definitely a strong contributor to the music early on, but after Muswell he really didn't do much after that, and has complained loudly about that in many interviews.
John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin was pretty much the guy who "wrote down" the music, but to give him the credit of creating might be stretching it.
Arrangers don't always get the credit they deserve.
that's cool i didn't know that. they both wrote an autobiography i was thinking of reading them both just to hear both sides.
anyway, that's defiantly true, especially in harison's and wright's cases. if you listen to all the beatles solo stuff, you'll notice that george's definitely has the most beatlesy sound. the wall and animals also weren't very psychedelic because roger waters was a punk and wouldn't let rick wright make contributions to the music
What a classic from Ray and the KinKs...from the 60's through the 90's they have always been far ahead of the rest of the pack...my absolute favorite all time band ever...and Ray is my hero. God save The KinKs, Ray, Dave and all their loyal fans who have supported them through the years!
Brilliant. The Kinks mastered the art of seeming unstructured while really being very structured, particularly in their lyrics. Brilliant use of internal rhymes.
Woah, that's such a great video! This is one of my favourite songs. Poor Ray though, it's pretty clear that he was indeed "on the verge of a nervous breakdown". Sigh.
this is a drinking song to end all drinking songs. get pissed and put this on and i guarentee there will be no one in the room who stays motionless. you cant help but bounce :-D
yes, where is that from? Awesome...Ray pulled that one out on his Storyteller tours a decade back, always thought it was a catchy obsucre song, like hundreds of others of his!
I'm fairly sure this clip is from a documentary on the Kinks that was shown in the UK about 15 years ago. I think I have the whole show on tape somewhere still.
I love the Kinks and Ray, but this song has always reminded me of Kermit the Frog singing a Muppet song.

@JohnyNomoney I agree. If you look up The Kinks in an encyclopedia, only one word should be in the entry: GENIUS.

Ray had and still has this amazing ability to take just about any situation and make a song about it.
Even about divorce. Even about getting shot in the leg and lying in a hospital. Even about getting robbed by the music industry robber barons.
