I can speak french. I have been studying it since 5th grade. So don't say that there aren't Americans who don't take the time to learn another language. I personally know a lot of people who study other languages. What about all of the illegals who broke the law came in the country illegally and refuse to learn English. I live near the Canadian border and Canadians usually speak English when or if they come down here. I would wanna learn French but, for me, it's much harder than Spanish. I do believe that we should only help the people who absolutely cannot help themselves, like injured soldiers and veterans..ect. cont...The gov't couldn't even run a Cash For Clunkers program with out screwing it up, what makes me think that I should turn over my health care to the gov't? What makes me believe that they can do better than the way that it is now? Why should I have to pay for someone who is to lazy to go out and get a "career" not a "job" and pay for their own health insurance? In the declaration, it says that we have the right to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness".

cont...notice that it doesn't say "guaranteed happiness" we also have the right to life, which by turning over health care to the gov't and some phony health board "not doctors", would in some instances deprive some people of life, because the treatments would either cost to much or not be worth wasting on some people. This in turn would then be the government' taking away liberty, also guaranteed in the Declaration.

Ok I think it's time for Americans to wake up! English is not the only language spoken in this world , I thinks it's selfish when Americans won't make a little effort to learn french or just keys words . I live in CAnada and it's supposed to be a bilingual country right ?! The only time I can speak french is when I'm at home . seriously I could not agree more with obama on this one . ♥

I can speak french. I have been studying it since 5th grade. So don't say that there aren't Americans who don't take the time to learn another language. I personally know a lot of people who study other languages. What about all of the illegals who broke the law came in the country illegally and refuse to learn English. It is our country we speak English here. Get over it! What would happen if an American crossed the border illegally into another country and refused to speak the language?

depends what you call majority, if it is by continent, then English is more common in all the continents of the world, except Asia. That would mean English is spoken more throughout the world than Chinese, because Chinese is spoken mainly in China

i agree with flowers on this one too. english is the most spoken language in the world for sure. its even starting to be popular more and more in asia. the reason for that isnt the fact that the world thinks english are awesome its just because it needed one language to be used worldwide instead of learning 40 languages every time u travel to another country.

@pooladrian But, really, what's the point? It'd make more sense to learn Spanish than French. We have tons more Spanish speakers here than French speakers. I live near the Canadian border and Canadians usually speak English when or if they come down here. I would wanna learn French but, for me, it's much harder than Spanish. Mainly because I don't know how to make the French 'r' and there's a lot of silent letters. I think French is a nice language, though.

In my opinion spanish is harder to pronounce because they speak very fast and there is a lot of oral accentuation but french is harder to write because of the stranges grammar rules. Matter a fact, my name is actually of Norman origin or something like that. It was from an Old French oath: par dieu, I believe it was spelled. It's now spelled Pardee. :) It's been Anglicized. I guess I'll have to practice my French again. I'll be happy to learn it, if I can get the 'r' down good. :)

How come obama complains that Americans can't speak other languages. From what he said in another video, they come over here speaking their own mother languages. Well, my friend, we would like Americans being just able to say "merci beaucoup"... i live in the center of Paris, and I appalled to see so many visitors, particularly from the US, who for example enter a shop without even a "Bonjour", take pictures of peoples and things, and sneak out without saying a word.
