i've had a waterdog for just about 2 months now, noticed 2 days ago it started changing, going up for air and gills shrinking, little hairs almost gone. Now on the 3rd day I came home and it was dead bloated, upside down, my question is, did it drown?? where could I have went wrong, fed it regulary, 50gal tank, temp 73, please advise, I would really like to try again, with out harming the next lil guy. thx
@missmom1979 it may have actually been an axolotl. while metamorphosis is natural and healthy for a tiger salamander, in an axolotl, it can be a sign that the water isn't clean, doesn't have enough oxegen, or has too many/bad chemicals in it. the axolotl changes as a last ditch survival mechanism, but it may have been too late for yours. Axolotls and tiger salamanders look a lot alike so it can be very difficult to tell them apart.
Long ago when I was just a wee boy we used to use these as bait while fishing. They work very well for bass, never knew they changed into salamanders though. It's an interesting new perspective, thanks.
@The32694 Because mudpuppies are just the larval state of a salamander. They're supposed to live under water for the first 6-8 weeks of their life and then morph into a salamander which lives on land. I personally prefer tiger salamanders just because they can live up to 30 years and their coloration is really beautiful.
@theairsoftsniper26 Well that all depends on what type of pet you want. If you eventually want a salamander then you should go with a water dog. If you want something that stays in an aquarium then go with the axolotl. Either way they are awesome.
i have one of these and i kept mine in my aquarium with a turtle rock that floats, and he changed into a salamander on his own, and when he did i put him in a terrestrial tank. whats on the bottom of your tank?
@hypnotic26 im not sure but, i think they are the same, there basiclly the creation of a salamander larva not loosing its gills and it grows up but in its larva form, ive heard making them morph like this shortens there lives and can put alot of stress on them but i dont know if thats true, to change them from the aquatic to the terrestrial form you add some kind of hormone to the water and over time they change into salamanders

@SirHoboTheSecond but ive seen people with like foot long mud puppys before i dont get it.
The32694 5 months ago
@The32694 That's because the water dogs can get big really fast. Sometimes they wait until they're fully grown to morph into an adult state.
