Broadstem mate, get the Hawkwind Zoo original (it was a demo actually believe it or not) before they dropped the 'Zoo' in their name, but it's by far a better version. But I am biased of course......... cos it's the first version I heard! Great song no matter what version eh?
Well, I'm not a junkie (more of an alkie, though I've smoked the odd joint) but I love this band. The most far-out and fantastical that I know of, and they still manage to keep grounded, in spite of the huge turnover of musicians.
I remember tripping on mushrooms to this when i was14 or 15 around 86/87. Always wished i'd been there when it actually came out. Mind you, there were damn good mushrooms. Anybody know fox house near Grindleford in England? Best mushrooms ever back then.
@kazraz72 The stately Kentish house called Knole, where the Beatles filmed their Strawberry Fields video, has always had an amazing secret crop in the backwoods
@kazraz72 Lots of people eat mushrooms still. I know at least 100 people in my small town that eat them from time to time, and at least 20 that will eat them whenever, myself included. I should mention that I'm from a small town, and I don't know everyone! I'm sure the actual numbers are much, MUCH higher! :)
no@kazraz72 hey the best mushies around were in meltham in hudds... had to climb over fence into farmers field .... n everyobody were ther picking mushies whilst farmer looking on ... hahaha wondering what was happening to his property... grreat times n great trips!!
@eedenschild Ha! Yes, I would stop drinking alcohol today if I could get some mushrooms. Trouble is, I cant trust myself to pick the right ones. I'd end up with something poisonous knowing my luck.
@panzermort Ha Ha! Yes, I remember now. God, it's been that long since I had any. To be honest, even if I could get some it wouldn't be the same now. When I was a teenager I lived in the peak district so it was great, we could go up on the moors. But now there are too many piss heads/idiots shouting in the street etc at night so I don't think it would make for a very good trip. Must go back to Derbyshire and have some there!
@kazraz72 so bloody true m8, we used to head up to remote areas in our area like bidston hill on the wirral and other places , now youd be too worried in case youd get your head ripped off ah well
Hawkfest near Blackpool....cant be more precise then that .....just a vague recollection of dancing round like an off my face muppet....awww good times ;) actually I have many inprecise recollections of muppet dancing to this..........
Yes thanks Sid this is one of my all time favourites loverly harp great acoustic in D. I want to learn to play guitar just so I can cover this at a local folk night (which I will have to start coz there is'nt one here). I might even gorw my hair and start smoking them funny fags.
Hawkwind are mighty lights burning there way through the cosmos. if you are going to do it then it has to be done riding on the wave of a tune or two. the mission is only at its birth for most of us.
The original Hawkwind Zoo version is better...........Honest!
Not that this re-recording for the first LP is bad, but the original is well, even more lovely than this one. Got it on 12" single on the Flicknife record label when it first came out and loved it.
Then some wise soul decided to re-release the first Hawkwind LP on CD with the original Hawkwind Zoo recordings added -------- I was over the moon!
Both versions are great but I like the first laid-back H/Zoo version more!
Great tune filled with memories of good times. In the days when this was big, the only bad shit anyone had to worry about was whether one day some commercial shite might hit the airwaves.
@Sids60sSounds Ive discovered who "IT" and "Frendz" were. IT was actually a hyphenated form of "International Times", an underground paper in the UK published by Barry Miles, John Hopkins "and others" . They were threatened with a lawsuit by the times of London and changed the name to IT.They were known for, among other things, columns written by journalists while "peaking" heavily under the influence of LSD. LOL - brings back good and bad memories ( bad like burning my eyeballs in the sunlight at dawn when still tripping after Hawkwind at Brixton academy)!
Saw them about 25 times from 1970 onwards including Greasy Truckers at the Roundhouse - they really had to be seen to be believed. I agree with Lemmy - the only reason that Pink Floyd got so big live was that they had bigger and better PA systems than Hawkwind, otherwise there was no contest in the psychedelic/space rock world.
@jazomir One thing I do appreciate Hawkwind for, is that their famous albums aren't worse than their less famous albums.
I mean, Dark Side of The Moon and The Wall are both very pop-sounding to an extent, although arranged in a complex manner, they are nothing compared to Wish you were here or Atom Heart Mother.
@MorkaGraven D,S O T M &THE WALL I WOULD NOT SAY THEY ARE POPPY IN ANY WAY VERY DARK AND DEPRESSING WHAT IS IT WITH ROGER WATERS AND THE WAR? I THINK JUSTIN BIEBER COULD DO A GOOD COVER OF THE WALL
@assinomen They're the most appreciated of Pink Floyd albums and have very much eschewed a lot of the earlier creativity within the band, removing a lot of the progressive rock elements for a more straightforward concept album of "rock songs".
@MorkaGraven I AGREE i only used the bieber as a contrast he seems to have become an icon for all that has gone wrong ..hes probably an ok guy good luck to him ! we just dont seem to get concept albums anymore .maybe im old and out of touch stuff like church of hawkwind. i remember i was at westbury alterate stonehenge i was young and green but the older convoy heads treated you with a bit of respect.i knew a few from wales ..but the conflict attracted the violent types .people id known for
