@trumpetids Miles did it to Freddie, saying something negative about him, Herbie Hancock said Wayne Shorter was one of the greatest composers of all time. Miles, in his autobiography compared Coltrane and Rollins, saying at first Rollins was better but later Coltrane outplayed him. To not compare is to do something even the greats did not practice. Music playing has always been competetively structered even though COMPETITION IS NOT ITS FOUNDATION.
@trumpetids I agree. There is going to be some comparison, not saying every great jazz musician is in competition with each other. Even tho miles dissed Wynton to this day he still says the guy was a musical genius. Dizzy was probably the second kindest jazz musician next to Louis Armstrong and i even heard him say you have to recognize b.s. playing in an interview here on youtube. Of course these guys critiqued and compared Freddie Hubbard said something bad about Wyntons jazz playing,
@RareJazzvideos I think its silly you even respond to me over my own musical preference. Miles and those guys critiqued each other. If their is just no such thing as musical preference then these wouldnt have chose musicians it would have been like a lotto . I have only heard about a hand full of Lesters music, im open to listening to a selection of his that you might know of that may change my opinion of him. I do see a consensus of who was great when i see who they played with and talked about
I'm a trumoet player and NO decent trumpet player can like the stuff i have heard L. Bowie play, i know its a bunch of crap. I keep quoting Wynton but most dont seem to like it but he is undoubtedly the most recognized jazz figure of the last 25 years and he said Lester never really knew how to play trumpet. As far as comparing, if you have one competitive bone in your body (which i do) you are going to compare, that is where you get your own taste or lack thereof of preference.
@trumpetids For me Lester Bowie´s music is excellent too. Why always comparing ? Lester is one style, Miles another. You like Miles but don´t like Lester, ok. But no one can affirm what is ' good jazz ' and what is not.
@trumpetids i have heard some of the smuck Lester played at times, from one trumpet player to another, i understand
