I think this weapon would have been even more successful if it had a forced air cooling system like the Lewis gun or the PKP. Its still effective but it could really improve its service.
So the credits goes to Germans and the MG-34.Then also this is one of my favourite Russian LMG.Please make separate shooting video of RPD,You didn't shoot much in this video.
@WalkerCrispyMunch No, the BAR used the full rifle cartridge .30-06 and the first intermediate cartridge was the German Kurtz 7.92x33mm designed for the Stg43 during WW2.
@C2builder I always asked myself what a SAW with a 20 round boxmag is good for. Do you have an answer to this question? I also heard that the BAR had a ton of parts so fieldstripping was a pain in the a**, making the weapon quite "unloved" by the troops. Oh, I have to be a smartarse...it´s "kurz" in German, meaning short as you probably know ;)
@kttcox1 IMHO I have no idea why they did away with the RPD. Any belt-fed gun is going to be a better squad level support weapon than a mag-fed gun. RPD wins!
@FunkyDudee93 About the only way you can slow down a gas operated gun (like the RPD) is to move the gas regulator up to the next larger hole size setting.
hey, ive been looking into the RPD, and ive seen plenty of parts kits (minus reciever), and i know theres a U.S. Company that produces a semi-auto reciever for the gun. and looking online a complete, allready built semi auto RPD nearly costs $4,000.
do you recomend building one up from a 500$ parts kit w/ the semi auto reciver, or should i go with the allready built semi-auto RPD?
also what would the legal processes be to have the RPD certified/legalized for owning, besides the transfer?
@spartan36789 People without a Class 3 license can only build a semi-auto, once built it can never be papered or registered into a machine gun. You can built a RPD from a parts kit with the new semi recievers out there and you can build it for alot less than buying a ready built one. Good luck.
@spartan36789 I work or a gunsmith shop, and we do this kind of thing once and a while, and unless you have an extensive knowledge of an RPD, and access to a machine shop, you will NOT be able to build one yourself.
I agree with wild50gunner rpd is a very well made, awesome gun even though its a little outdated. If they could recreate a better rpd with better matierials, It could become one of the best squad automatic weapons of this era
I own a semi automatic RPD made by DSA arms, I have a question, every time I charge the weapon there is a large gap left evry time the piston goes back the is a large gap... my question is, is that suppose to be there or is there supposed to be a cover over that?
@SpiritofAdventure22 You need a FFL license and also pay a SOT Federal Tax to own any machine gun. There are different types of licenses, some allow only buying and selling and others allow building buying and selling.
For now you can buy a semi-auto RPD from DS Arms for about $2,100. It's not quite as fun as full-auto, but it's darn nice having a belt fed semi! Check them out.
@9phillyphan9 7.62 is the caliber of the bullet. 39mm is the length of the casing. So when you see that it refers to the size of the round and how powerful it is, i.e. pistol vs carbine vs rifle.
A 39mm casing is a carbine used in assault rifles, the M1 rifle fired a .30-06 round, which is a 7.62x63. It has a longer effective range, see?
What's the difference between an LMG and an assault rifle? Can't you just put a drum magazine on an AK-47 and call it an LMG? Are the LMG's more resistant to heat? Can someone tell me the difference?
@J0hannski, the difference between the two are that the LMG will allow you to put a greater amount of sustained fire on a target from a single weapon. Most LMG will have a greater mag or belt capacity and a heavier barrel to handle the high volume of fire.
This was the light machine gun used by the NVA and Vietcong during the Vietnam war?

@C2builder RPK can share magazines with the infantrymen carrying rifles. RPD can not. That's why they dropped it.
EchoOfLohengrin 5 months ago
@EchoOfLohengrin
not only this reason
it's cheaper to have an assault rifle (AK-47) and machine guns (RPK, PK) of the same family sharing many many common parts as well as produce them.
the Russian Wikipedia says it's due to commonality, it also says many RPD's are stored in military depots.

@Wxn30 No modification. All RPD fire the 7.62x39 cartridge.

@9phillyphan9 7.62x39 is a type of ammunition, fired by most Russian guns, aside from the RPD in this video, which fires a 7.62x54, or Russian .308.

@Wxn30 No, the RPD fires the 7.62x39, always has. Same caliber as the AK47.

Interesting Video C2builder, all the more interesting that while Russia was the first for a squad atomatic weapon they then replaced it with the PK.
I'm sure I read somewhere that not all Russian units were happy to lose their RPD when the PK entered service.
