Lame, here in the united states it's suv, large sedan, truck vs small car, guess what small car loses a lot. When I am going to have a family of my own, I am not going to buy a freaking prius, yaris or Honda fit ...Hell no. Big suv or large sedan. Safety over efficiency, No human being is worthless then saving a few buck,
Have checked the video and can only say that Fifth gear loos more stars in haven now. They also took the engine away from the Volvo. If you not know how much it has to do to the whole safety sturcture, you shall not do a test like this. Prbably the gearbox and the driveaxle is taken away to, Who also has to the impactzone and safety to do. Make it again 5G.
Omg of course size does matters. Here one of my favourite programs lose several points.
Do a realistic crasch instead with new cars, with same NCAP points from same testperiod of NCAP, either form NCAP1 or NCAP2 not one from each one. Both from same!. The you will see the differense!
so i guess what they are saying is not to buy a new car like the renault because it could kill someone in an old car i know the car im going to buy now a volvo the older styled one!!!
I had 2 trafic accidents with my Land Rover Defender, both times hit form rear by 2 cars. One was alfa 159, cca 2008, other was old merc S-class, cca 2000. I come out only with some minor dents and paint chips from other cars. Merc hit me quite fast while i was standing on red light, cca 40mph(60kmh)(drunk driver), Alfa while i was moving (I hit the brake cause of drunken pedestrian).
Merc was almost utterly destroyed, broken glass, engine bay, etc...alfa with bonnet and lights crushed.
Do you say that the alfa is way safer then the mercedes?
Then I say ROFLOL, for the first there are 2 big diffrenses between your 2 accidents, one you where stand still at redlight when merc crashed into you at your behind. The second when you where moving, how big diffrens in speed was it when the alfa hit you from behind 5-10mph.
So if you cant understand that tehn your way out in desert and talking, and on dagerous ground.
And last to get hit from behind mostly dosent make big insurance om the driver or frontpassenger in any car like it does to the hiting car coming from behind. But the biggest risk to get a Viplash is when you get hit from behind like you got by the mercedes, and it does matters alot how new car you sit in then. Most new cars have viplashimpact-defens system in ther chairs. My Volvo 850 from 1992 has it, and are still a very good one compared to the new.
I guess the distinctive Volvo red block is shrouded under the mass of twisted metal. But this would have been a different outcome if the Renault had hit more in the middle, so the impact was supported by the engine. That would have taken the brunt of the collision and avoided the Renault slicing past the engine and breaching the interior cabin.
Renaults are shit. I would own the volvo wagon anyday. And lets be honest...you better damn well believe a 25 year old car will not be beat by a new car...christ almighty, I mean really.
I still think in real life circumstance the Volvo would win. I mean I got in an accident with my 1991 940 with a Toyota Camry, he hit my left front end. I got a small, 5cm dent and 2 small scratches.. And my left turning signal casing was shattered...the Camry...well that's a different story.
LET'S NOT MENTION THE FACT THE GUY'S HEAD IN THE MODUS SNAPPED LIKE A DAMNED YO-YO!
Yeah, the driver in the Volvo is going to have head injuries. But they're gonna live. The person in that Modus won't. Watch the dummy's head in the Modus - that's a fatality.
AGAIN, I want to see that little rinky dink car directly head on that Volvo. There's a reason why they won't show crashes like that.
"time to rethink that convention" It's an older Volvo that was safe for it's time period, but standards change, especially in the last decade. If this Renault went up against a full sized Mercedes sedan of the same year I know the Mercedes would fair better.
I crashed a Hyundai into one of those Volvos at 55 mph and the Volvo did much better. The clutch pedal was shoved up, the roof came down, even the boot lid broke loose and smashed into the back window, thank god I had no children back then.
This test is unfair. They're trying two models with 19 years security design between them. What would happen when a Modus will crash to a car from year 2020?Probably the Modus will be the loser.
It's only physics. The Volvo slowed down in 1,5m while Renault 0,3m. (approximately) So, the deceleration (negative G) was bigger in the Renault. In this case it doesn't matter what happen with the car.
Totally saw that. Who knows what other alterations they might have done to that Volvo(weakening chassis, removing structural components, etc) in order to obtain their desired crash result. This material is clearly a publicity piece for Renault.
People should look through what it's shown on TV and see past the appearances.
I really think a ~1985 Volvo is safer than a 2004 Renault Modus... now a 1960s-earlier Volvo is a totally different story. 19 years isn't a terribly long time...
@WhiteIceMan3 Well Volvo is ahead of Renault on safety technology... a 1985 Volvo is probably as safe as safe as a typical 1992 car. Now the Modus is as safe as a typical c. 2007 car (15 years ahead) but that big of a size difference matters more than just 15 years of progress.
@whattheheck1000 I'll agree with you. Volvo is a company that focuses on safety. Renault is just catching up. Since it isn't like M-B and Volvo who are leaders in safety, time will have to be put in the factor to determine when minicars can get such safety.
This test is decieving, its comparing how safe cars where and how safe they are now, if this test was about vehicle size then they would have included a 5-star rated full size vehicle. Larger cars ARE in fact safer in head on wrecks such as this. Watch this test by the IIHS, it was at 40 mph between sub-compact cars and mid-size, the drivers of the mid-size wouldve walked away, the sub-compact drivers would have died instantly.
Lame, here in the united states it's suv, large sedan, truck vs small car, guess what small car loses a lot. But Alfa hit me much slower speed.
I had 5 point belts, cause when you drive Land Rover Defender, crumple zone is the other car.
However, LR Defenders are very unsafe in case of roll-over, but I have roll-cage and bull bar(for front collisions)
