As with "a light that never goes out " . I do remember this beautiful song from my youth, but never knew it were the Smiths behind it. This is such an amazing song.,
Although I like the fuller sound with Gannon, I still prefer the emptier sound in the early Smiths with just Johnny. The melancholic nature of Morrissey's lyrics and style in my opinion complement the sparse mix far better.
@aektzis91 Johnny is playing the strat and Craig Gannon is playing the Gibson in my opinion while Marr definitely is master I love the shows they did with Gannon on second guitar it just sounded so much fuller
I have always said that The Smiths are one of a handful of bands, whose live performances are better than their already excellent studio recordings. Moz's voice and his play on the verses of the songs are just sublime. While Johnny seems to rise to another creative and energy level.
And 'The Boy With the Thorn in His Side' has to be THE most underrated Smiths song! When idiots like Johnny Rogan are so immune to its charms.. every melody line in this song is gorgeous - Morrissey's vocal, Andy's bass, johnny's guitar melody' ; even the drums are great! And the way it all coalesces at the end.. just gorgeous. Both Morrissey and Marr separately rated this song VERY highly in post-split interviews.
I always thought this performance of 'Boy..' was sublime and, like all the 'Queen is Dead' songs on 'Rank' so much better than the studio version. 'Rank' to my mind is the only album that really captued the potential of The Smiths - this five piece live line up was the definitive version - and a hugely underrated album, mainly I think because it was live and released after they split up.
@789janderson Yeah With Craig Gannon playing great rythm guitar it really filled their sound out to what the studio versions sounded like. Johnny Marr was like Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin in the studio; layers of guitars but he only has 2 hands on stage so some of the fullness of the sound went away live before Craig joined them. If they ever reunite whicj I can't see happening, I hope he's invited back as well.
Yeah, a more organic feel of course being live. You can hear the soloing guitar reaaally peel well! I remember hearing that tape 18 yrs. ago for the first time.
Also...interesting to actually SEE when the cymbals crash. It's something I don't often pay attention to in pop songs.
The Rank sound is the best they ever sounded.
