I nocticed that to. To activate this easter egg, you need 20 of each color pikmin (Bulbmin don't count) with you. It will stay active as long all of them stay with, but if one gets lost or is sent to work during the song, they will still finish it.

That's the idea. When you know what the song means, however... It's actually enough to depress you for a while.

The Pikmin love Olimar so much they give him their absolute devotion, it's a relationship where Olimar teaches the Pikmin how to fight and survive, while the Pikmin help Olimar by doing whatever he needs them to.

That's what the song is about, it's not a cheery song, or a depressing song, it's a love song the Pikmin sing to Olimar while he's on their planet.

Olimar does show concern about them. If you ever see the scene where all your pikmin die from the first Pikmin, he calls himself a failure of a leader, and can't even sleep over the fact he let them die off. After the Onion spits out the seeds, he vows to never let it happen again.

Yes, I know. He never needed to care, though, did he? He could have been cruel and simply used them as a means to an end, which could have been a very likely outcome with nearly any other 'leader'. That's what's sad about it; they can be exploited by someone who happens to find the Onion, and they don't deserve to be fated to slavery.
