The electric shock actually stops the heart allowing the cells to regain controll of it own electrical system. You can see it as a Reset Button for the heart...
Well, the purpose of defibrilation is to stop the electrical and mechanacal conduction of the heart temporarily. The heart will usually will restart itself usually resulting in a uniform, organized rythym.
I almost died from a VF Arrest last year. If it were not for four people that dragged me out of my car (which obviously crashed) and gave me CPR for over 10 minutes until Paramedics arrived to defbirilate I would not have made it.
I have only just returned from hospital after having an ICD put in. Initially it was thought my heart suffered a viral infection but subsequent MRI scans displays it is scarring, likely a form of cardiomyopathy.
Ventricular Fibrillation is an unorganized random firing of the electrical processes in the heart resulting in unorganized rhythm and inadequate blood supply to the body. It's not necessarily an myocardial infarction (heart attack).
so im guessing the heart eventually goes back into arrhythmia after this procedure... but I don't get how it even works... how does an eletrical shock stop the v fib and make it totally normal again... oh and amazing video too.
the heart is in vfib, meaning the ventrical is just quivering with no "normal" or controlled rythm, heart rythyms start at the SA node, not the ventricle, so the when you defib, it stops the hearts electrical activity, and allows the hearts automaticity (automatic electrical activity) to correct itself and "start over" with a normal sinus rythym
Actually, each muscle fiber is contracting to his own frequency, ignoring the sinal node, who commands the heart by sending a depolarization wave that depolarizes all the muscle fibers at the same time ... but as the node is not the one in charge and the fibers are ignoring him, it is necessary to administer a very high voltage, in order to depolarize all the fibers at the same time, and the sinal node to resume its activity as the pacemaker...
@sickstyle the heart is then running on purely electrical impulses that are getting carried away (think about instead of a big meat-head lifting heavy weights, he is now lifting a 5 lb. weight). shocking it is pretty much the wake up call that snap it out of the stuper.
Please!!!! I need this video for use in my courses in resuscitation. Anybody can send the video to jclemente @ insvacare . es? Thank you.

you know what i love? i love that the heart stops for a while after being shocked before starting again. for some reason, it turns me on

The main cause of Ventricular Fibrillation is a Myocardial infarction... But still is not necessary

This is probably one of the best videos I have seen demonstrating V-Fib and resultant defibrillation. Excellent video!!!

It is like that.
the shock works like the "reset button" of your pc. The heart thinks "oh, i should better work normal" and does ist ;)

well, as far as i know that's exactly what the defibrillator is for - to stop v-fibrillation... but i'm not ph.d. so correct me if i'm wrong ;)
