When the Manson murders happened they found an opportunity, so they had the district attorney make up the whole Helter Skelter story in order to shock the world and effectively end the Hippie movement. And it worked, they died down soon afterwards.

And the trial was completely unfair to Charlie, the prosecution made up stories about him to forward their case and he wasn't allowed to represent himself. And the only participants that went against Charlie are interestingly the ones that took part in the murders,(Atkins, Watson, Krenwinkel etc) Most of his supporters still deny his guilt today.

And I don't have a definite reason for why Tex, Susan and the others committed the murders, but it could have been that they misunderstood some things he said; them wanting to please him; all those drugs on their impressionable minds; and they might actually have been eager to kill; all of these things cant result in something good.
