However, if you really pay close attention to the news lately, you'll see that a lot of the crime isn't just in Detroit, it's in the suburbs as well. And a lot of crimes that take place in Detroit, are by people that don't even live there. If the city was able to rebuild Detroit, imagine how wonderful it would be!

The unions, like UAW are a major obstacle for businesses looking to relocate to Michigan. @kupo717 Agreed, and I'm not even from Detroit (although I've been there several times). But Detroit has ALL KINDS of wonderful things to offer if people can just turn off the STUPID ten o'clock news and give the place a fair chance. And if you're an American historian, for example, Detroit should be a PLAYGROUND for you, as the city has given SO MANY contributions to American history/culture over the years.

Chicago is not thriving. No city in the midwest is thriving except for maybe Columbus. Chicago has lost over 1 million people since 1960. Chicago has high crime risk, not as high as Detroit's or Saint Louis's, but certaintly higher than Minneapolis or Idianapolis. Chicago is losing jobs and the real estate market is far worse than the national average. Teh midwest is in decline. We are going to have to become more like the mountain states or the south in order to gain back a strong local economy

I live about 15 minutes north of Detroit. So many people have so many bad things to say about it, like the crime. However, if you really pay close attention to the news lately, you'll see that a lot of the crime isn't just in Detroit, it's in the suburbs as well. And a lot of crimes that take place in Detroit, are by people that don't even live there. If the city was able to rebuild Detroit, imagine how wonderful it would be!

Yeh, reports about black crime in suburbia. Even the small little metro Detroit townships are feeling the effect.

My dad is from Detroit, so I've always been rather loyal to the city, despite all the slams it receives. However, when i visited the city, they tried to mug me not once, but twice. And this wasn't in the 'ghetto', it was near the Ford museum and Comerica Park. some renaissance...

Your going to get crime everywhere. In fact you more likely to get robbed in wealthier sections of cities because you let your guard down. Guard down means you lacks your security and not police presents.

I worked Downtown for seven years and there is nothing wrong with it. Its completely safe. Its just the inner city that you should be worried about. Completely ghetto and run down.
