I listened to a professor talk about his fly research, and it's not like we can directly translate the results to humans and hope it works, but it's important in understanding important cellular mechanisms. The problem here is that the monies she was addressing here were not for genetic research at all. They were for fruit fly pest control for olive fields in California. It isn't even D. melanogaster. Moreover, the research was not even being performed in California, but rather in France. WOW! fruit fly research is a useless pet project....I don't think she realizes that the fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) is a model organism for the study of human genetics. A lot can be learned in how genes are expressed in humans just by studying them in fruit flies. It thus makes it rather INEXPENSIVE and much more ETHICAL to study gene expression in flies than in humans.

She is NOT against Genetic research, she is against using Taxpayer dollars--that should be used wholly to operate Federal agencies and Infrastructure such as the Armed Forces--as a big slush fund for any legislator to claim for his/her own vote-buying local/non-local projects.

Sarah Palin is a politician, not a scientist. For a science-educated Christian's view, check out a book by Francis Collins (head of Human Genome Project) There's one on faith and science -it's good. It's not hostile like some of these comments.

I'm not some highly-educated biologist, so I can't tell you what some of the major breakthroughs that fruit flies have been used for are or other things like that without looking it up, but that doesn't mean I don't know basic trivia about the world.

The problem here is that the monies she was addressing here were not for genetic research at all. They were for fruit fly pest control for olive fields in California. It isn't even D. melanogaster. Moreover, the research was not even being performed in California, but rather in France. This does however highlight her bad communication skills because it would have taken just two more sentences by her to make that clear. I still think its funny and parody it a lot myself.

WOW! fruit fly research is a useless pet project....I don't think she realizes that the fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) is a model organism for the study of human genetics. A lot can be learned in how genes are expressed in humans just by studying them in fruit flies. It thus makes it rather INEXPENSIVE and much more ETHICAL to study gene expression in flies than in humans.

This video is deceiving because the earmarked monies Palin is responding to are not for biomedical fruit fly research using D. melanogaster, but are rather for olive fruit fly pest control to protect the olive and olive oil industry in California. So it is not clear that Palin does not know that Drosophila is used for genetic research. One could legitimately question the public value of pest control for an industry whose contribution to the overall US economy is most likely miniscule.

What Sarah Palin was speaking against is HOW the program is funded. She is NOT against Genetic research, she is against using Taxpayer dollars--that should be used wholly to operate Federal agencies and Infrastructure such as the Armed Forces--as a big slush fund for any legislator to claim for his/her own vote-buying local/non-local projects.
The research could have been funded by a research grant of which there are more than a few available from big-donor corporations.

Most likely, She was not aware, at that time, just how much the results from the studies of Drosiphila flies could be appliied to and therefore be beneficial to human genetics; on the surface, any ordinary citizen who DIDN'T understand genetics and the role of Drosiphila melanogaster most likely would not have understood the significance of such results either.

I have done a considerable amount of research and study on the southern states, from slavery to the present. Conservatives and southerners in particular are deeply afraid/paranoid about change. I believe in God and I enjoy science. I don't know the politics behind her views on "pet projects," but since the fruit fly project she mentions is about pest control, I don't think she meant to seriously harm geneticists or medical research. Sarah Palin is a politician, not a scientist. For a science-educated Christian's view, check out a book by Francis Collins (head of Human Genome Project) There's one on faith and science -it's good. It's not hostile like some of these comments.

Thanks for putting things in perspective.Palin is speaking of pest control, not curing disease. Everyone is suddenly a scientist. Just like during the 2004 elections when the dems said that Bush was against curing diseases because he is against embryonic stem cell research - when in reality doctors haven't been successful using embryos, but have been very successful using adult stem cells (which Bush is for!)

This is the most disturbing, ignorant comment I've heard from Sarah Palin. Drosophila studies are the FOUNDATION for genetic research. virtually everything we know about gene expression, mutation, etc. was learned from studying fruit flies. Yes, high school biology textbooks all at least MENTION Morgan's work with fruit flies. Sarah Palin is completely uninformed about basic scientific research concepts. She is in no way qualified to make ANY decision regarding its funding or significance.

yes i agree, but insanity does not emerge in a result of a belief. The acts of 9/11 which is another topic in itself and western media cannot be trusted to give you a non-biased report on like insidents. But the point still stand, Atheism (which i am) has its people who are just as insane as those who "drive planes into towers" just without the ability or willingness to complete an act does not make their mental stability any more so sound then those who do.
