  • Awww.. what awesome video of this lovely man. Never meet him in person because I'm from another country. But one day we'll meet. I just bought his potato peeler today, now waiting for it to be delivered. My grandparents had this potato peeler before I was only 15 when I first started using their one to help prepare tea. Always wanted to find the exact potato peeler like that, and now I've found it! I'll give one to my grandmother too since her's broke years ago.

  • wow this man is amazing

  • you should see what it does to fingers.....

  • I love this man!!!

  • i wouldn't be surprised if he makes 1500-2000 a day.

calculate it him working 5 days a week and that is just over 480,000$ a year.....CASH!

  • @gohabs1119 He lived on Park Ave.. He was a millionaire. lol

  • A wonderful salesman God bless his family

  • no this cant be hes dead!!! nooo i have been wait years 2 go buy 1 of his potato peelers n im going to the city on park ave 2 morow n hes dead

  • @dafingerskater If you're in Union Square his daughter sells them there sometimes, same technique same product...or you can find them in some of the stores too. Welcome to NYC !!

  • Well shoot, if they work they work! I just bought the slicing board at the California State Fair and got the peeler, the julienne peeler, and the razor sharp pairing knife all for free!

  • This is my grandad's cousin. Only found this out the other night when my grandad's brother was over from Australia. Wish I'd known when I was in NY (from London) ten years ago. Amazing man.

  • @comingupforblair Indeed he was an amazing man. He used to sell childrens books years before he found this item and he was just as successful with the books as the peeler...I spoke with him a few times and he told me how he started at a young age...Sorry for your loss..He seized the day for sure and was a very kind man. Cheers.

  • He was amazing & lovely, shame he's gone now.

  • Aww dude did you see that? 2 people in the video bought 5 each and that's $40 right there. Man this guy was racking the money up in the day

  • Wow...I'm sold. Great New Yorker. RIP Joe.

  • Oops forgot to subtract Joe's food cost. That's around $10-$25/day for carrots and potatoes, gloves. Wow what a business.

  • He sold 16 peelers in less than 6 minutes and brought in $70 in revenue. Wholesale for 16 peelers is about $20 (a little over a buck each). So he just made a $50 profit for 1 presentation. If he does 6 presentations per hour that's a $300 Profit in 1 hour. If he works 6 hours a day that's $1800 / day profit. Even on a bad day he probably still makes $500. Not bad.

  • @evilclown99 Thats pretty good.

  • You can be good and honst, but if you are not outgoing you have no value in this world.

  • wow he makes so much money in just 5 minutes

  • I need one....make it two...!!!

  • You take one? youve got no friends. like me.

  • cool video

  • aw he died

  • He's awesome. Shame to hear he passed away.

  • Didn't this guy die recently? I thought I read an article on the NYTimes about him.

  • What was that , $60 in five minutes? Assuming a steady rate of that for each five minute period that's $720 /hour. Those things prolly cost him .50 each, do the math, ain't bad.

  • Lol. 2:20

  • WANT

  • I bought one, and they are every bit as good as he said they were.

  • That's how epic he is he made you by one. And you just watched a video on the internet

  • Now think about this, you have a German tourist(me) buying a Swiss made product from an English man in New York City USA.

He was pleasant to watch, the reason I watched this video, is because I got to see him live.

  • Lol excuses ;-P

  • That was a good video

  • Wow, he is awesome!

  • this guy is an awesome salesman! i want him to work for me! lol

  • wat happened to him??

  • For 60 years the salesman, originally from Manchester, England, setup shop throughout Manhattan, often at the Union Square Greenmarket, and demonstrated his amazing $5 Swiss vegetable peeler on carrots, potatoes and pineapples for eager onlookers and tourists. Joe died on Sunday, at the age 75; The New York Times reports.

  • this guys making that chedddaaaa R.I.P

  • RESPECT!!!!! R.I.P JOE!!!!!

  • best in the world i guess lol nice he makes allot of money i bet! R.I.P

  • Wow what a fantastic salesman! Should have spent his life selling stuff for some big company instead of selling potato peelers on the streets though, IMO. Would have made a fortune...

  • convinced me

  • "That's how the French make 'em"

    LIAR !!!!

  • fantastic! RIP good sir

  • RIP JOE FOREVEAAAAAAAA

  • what a likeable guy

  • I like this guy :) !

  • So um where do I get a peeler?

  • Best most of you guys didn't know he's a millionaire?!

He used to live on park avenue in NY, and taught his daughter the tricks so well - she paid for her own education buy selling children's books the same way!

seriously... there's a video on youtube about him and his life

  • Aww.. I've never seen this guy before.. but I really like him.. ;_;

    Too bad he's dead..

    Now I'm sad D:

    That made me laugh

  • His daughter is taking over the spiel soon at the

    same place on Union Square.

  • This guy was awesome, he will be missed.

  • I loved this guy.

  • RIP.

The last time I saw him was in Union Sq sometime in Jan'09. That was also the first time. I have never saw a man who could make me want to buy a friggin peeler or put that much enthusiasm into the pitch. Unfortunately though I didn't have money I could spend at the time. RIp

  • RIP

  • Rest in peace, Mr. Ades. You were one of the people who make NYC genuinely interesting.

Watching him work was fascinating. To see him on the street was always a little bit of assurance that all was right with the world. NYC is a little dimmer & grimmer now that he is gone.

I still have the peeler I bought from him and I'm glad I got one!

  • RIP Joe

  • Concur... but I bet he got to hate bloody carrots

  • RIP Joe.

  • RIP Joe

  • NY is less interesting with his loss! Thanks for the wisecracks and peeler!

  • Nooooooooo! RIP Joe! I will forever cherish your peeler.

  • I had never heard of this gent, but last spring I was serving jury duty in Brooklyn and saw him across the street from the courthouse. I *had* to buy from him -- his bit hearkens to another time and age. I can't use the peeler without thinking of him, and regretting I didn't buy some as gifts if only to but from him and reward him for the memory he's given me, and apparently many others.

    RIP Joe, and thanks!

  • I remeber seing him work for hours... I was always enchanted by the cadence of his voice... As a sideshow performer and a former street vendor in New York... I considered him one of my heros... I never meet Mr. Ades... just admired him from afar... New York has lost one of what makes it New York... thank you for the memories.

  • LOL! This guys sound and face looked familiar to me and then the penny dropped. I know this man's son David, who is something of a wannabe sax player in Australia. Dave also resorted to selling perfumes on the street's of Sydney(complete with the fake cockney type accent) when gigs were few and far between. I guess the carrot doesn't fall far from the tree.

  • Rest in Peace.

  • I work across from Union Square and saw him constantly... I'll miss hearing him... thanks for this video!

  • RIP Joe... I still have your peeler. You'll be missed...

  • yeah, I saw him once only working his "magic" with the peeler. Gosh, it's tragic that the is no longer with us. Bless his soul.

  • hi reddit

  • God bless him! I m going to miss him... Where will we find those peelers now!

  • RIP

  • I'll miss seeing Joe --and hearing his amazing voice-- at the northwest corner of the Union Square Greenmarket.

  • His peelers will outlast him. He'll be missed.

  • heaven needed a good peeler

  • Jolly Good Show!

    Only in NYC!

    :-)

    God bless him.

  • RIP, Joe.

Read about him years ago in Vanity Fair, and decided that next time I went to New York, I'd buy a peeler from him. Oh, well - I'll never get one now.
