Awww.. what awesome video of this lovely man. Never meet him in person because I'm from another country. But one day we'll meet. I just bought his potato peeler today, now waiting for it to be delivered. My grandparents had this potato peeler before I was only 15 when I first started using their one to help prepare tea. Always wanted to find the exact potato peeler like that, and now I've found it! I'll give one to my grandmother too since her's broke years ago.
@dafingerskater If you're in Union Square his daughter sells them there sometimes, same technique same product...or you can find them in some of the stores too. Welcome to NYC !!
Well shoot, if they work they work! I just bought the slicing board at the California State Fair and got the peeler, the julienne peeler, and the razor sharp pairing knife all for free!
This is my grandad's cousin. Only found this out the other night when my grandad's brother was over from Australia. Wish I'd known when I was in NY (from London) ten years ago. Amazing man.
@comingupforblair Indeed he was an amazing man. He used to sell childrens books years before he found this item and he was just as successful with the books as the peeler...I spoke with him a few times and he told me how he started at a young age...Sorry for your loss..He seized the day for sure and was a very kind man. Cheers.
He sold 16 peelers in less than 6 minutes and brought in $70 in revenue. Wholesale for 16 peelers is about $20 (a little over a buck each). So he just made a $50 profit for 1 presentation. If he does 6 presentations per hour that's a $300 Profit in 1 hour. If he works 6 hours a day that's $1800 / day profit. Even on a bad day he probably still makes $500. Not bad.
omg i met this guy 4 years ago, i will never forget him! ,......i bought 2 lolz he just gets you in the mood to cook for your girl lolz he should be president!
there are no good fries in france.... It's FRENCHED fries, the verb. Belgium is the true fries country, every 700 meters there is a shop that JUST sells fries, and I tell you, they are the best fries in the world by far! Belgium is where fries were invented. When i was in france there even 1 fries shop, they only excist in belgium and they are EVERYWHERE xD
What was that , $60 in five minutes? Assuming a steady rate of that for each five minute period that's $720 /hour. Those things prolly cost him .50 each, do the math, ain't bad.
For 60 years the salesman, originally from Manchester, England, setup shop throughout Manhattan, often at the Union Square Greenmarket, and demonstrated his amazing $5 Swiss vegetable peeler on carrots, potatoes and pineapples for eager onlookers and tourists. Joe died on Sunday, at the age 75; The New York Times reports.
Wow what a fantastic salesman! Should have spent his life selling stuff for some big company instead of selling potato peelers on the streets though, IMO. Would have made a fortune...
Best most of you guys didn't know he's a millionaire?!
He used to live on park avenue in NY, and taught his daughter the tricks so well - she paid for her own education buy selling children's books the same way!
seriously... there's a video on youtube about him and his life
when i found out he died i genuinely cried. me and my friend loved this guy so much we always impersonated him and had laughs. we miss him so much. he had his routine down to a word. my fav line is "theyre made of stainless steel they CANNOT RUST"
The last time I saw him was in Union Sq sometime in Jan'09. That was also the first time. I have never saw a man who could make me want to buy a friggin peeler or put that much enthusiasm into the pitch. Unfortunately though I didn't have money I could spend at the time. RIp
One of NY's gems. I've seen him sell his peelers and children's book tons of times in Union Square, but yet I'd always stop to take a look just for his showmanship. Sorry to hear that old Joe passed. R.I.P., good man.
Rest in peace, Mr. Ades. You were one of the people who make NYC genuinely interesting.
Watching him work was fascinating. To see him on the street was always a little bit of assurance that all was right with the world. NYC is a little dimmer & grimmer now that he is gone.
I still have the peeler I bought from him and I'm glad I got one!
I had never heard of this gent, but last spring I was serving jury duty in Brooklyn and saw him across the street from the courthouse. I *had* to buy from him -- his bit hearkens to another time and age. I can't use the peeler without thinking of him, and regretting I didn't buy some as gifts if only to but from him and reward him for the memory he's given me, and apparently many others.
I remeber seing him work for hours... I was always enchanted by the cadence of his voice... As a sideshow performer and a former street vendor in New York... I considered him one of my heros... I never meet Mr. Ades... just admired him from afar... New York has lost one of what makes it New York... thank you for the memories.
LOL! This guys sound and face looked familiar to me and then the penny dropped. I know this man's son David, who is something of a wannabe sax player in Australia. Dave also resorted to selling perfumes on the street's of Sydney(complete with the fake cockney type accent) when gigs were few and far between. I guess the carrot doesn't fall far from the tree.
