The LPer sounds somewhat like my dad, so I'll guess he's from Fife (an area on the East coast, wedged between Edinburgh and Dundee) or the 'mamba' (Miles And Miles of Bugger-All) Highlands. He must not speak much to people outside his region, or he'd have learned to slow his accent down for this.

The full spectrum of American accents are just as likely to crop up in our media as any other UK accent, thanks to the power of Hollywood. It sounds perfectly normal in that environment, but you can guarantee that heads will turn if you hear someone producing the same accent in public.

Short version: We're used to those examples and think of them as just as silly/defined as the UK's most famous accents, but seriously don't anticipate hearing the same drawls 'in the wild'.

To streak of the week the reason why people from mainland Europe can speak better English than the native speakers in the UK is that for the Europeans its their second language. In the UK it gets mixed up with British or regional slang. The people in europe will have slang in their own language but their English is still book clean if that makes sense. Also if it helps yes there is an accent like that in Scotland its from the east coast, Peterhead area afaik.
