What an insane death toll, especially when you consider the world population at the time... building codes definitely make all the difference, although I dread the day the earthquake that no building could ever withstand strikes a major city.
Yes, China is very good at handling natural disasters. But there are 2000+ coal miners died every year. And about 5000+ ppl die in traffic accidents every month.
@ilvtofku yes, I recall reading about the staggering number of coal mining accidents in China, and indeed, around the world. There was just a recent one in the news in West Virginia I believe. It's definitely one of the most dangerous jobs in the world.
Good stuff John! I too get interested in useless knowledge and do read Atlases......great bathroom reading! I see you also enjoy a bargain, That looks like a Borders or Barnes & Noble clearance sticker on that atlas......I too have found some great books from those racks. LOL
@dacrocker I tell you what, derek, I love the bargain tables at my book store. $9.99 for that atlas, I felt like a thief. I'm used book sales favorite client too :)
@ John good stuff bro !!!! Just saw your message ya sent me !!!! Ya busted again but nothing I can do about it this one for a copyright violation Oops !!!!!!! I can still reply fro my iPod so that's cool !!! I 'm Gunna do a vid or two on 69 pussykatt's channel cause I got some gifts !!!!
It should be noted that the 1811-1812 series of earthquakes on the New Madrid Fault in the mid south along Missouri and Arkansas only killed 1 person. It was a very sparsely populated region. Not any more! If the same 1811-1812 quakes hit today, tens of thousands of people would die. Transportation across the Mississippi would come to a screeching halt, and Memphis would be completely devastated. Memphis is the main airport hub for Fedex. 5 stars!
You are indeed correct Sir! I've sat in on a few of the planning committees for the New Madrid Fault as it will affect Illinois. We might get a lot of evacuees coming into Illinois if they can make it across the river.
I notice that every time I research something on you tube I end up looking at something that has nothing to do with what I was researching.Good video.
Dude, Your gonna' have to get some big maps for the walls of your command post there. Or hold the atlas a little closer. Can't believe they didn't starve in 2009.
I could be wrong, but I don't remember hearing about a massive famine in China in 2009, and I just said that off the top of my head. If I'm wrong hopefully somebody will correct me :)
Yeah, it's also addicting, because you find something interesting, and then that leads to another thing, and you stop your original research to research this other thing, and then it continues hahaha. I love it!
Wow! Thats a lot of people effected by disasters! I had no idea the numbers were so high. i wonder why the death toll was so low? Maybe the Chinese officials are extremely adept at moving people out of effected areas? I'm guessing the Chinese people actually listen to their government too which might help?
It could be a variety of factors. For one, the Chinese government could deliberately be keeping the numbers low, two China is a big country and calculating numbers might be difficult, especially if there is not great census taking. Three, I think Chinese people are used to following the orders of their government, guns and soldiers can be very persuasive, and they have no choice. It's not like in America where a "mandatory" evacuation is hard to enforce.
Oh i know how you feel about memorizing dates! At school i some times scare ppl when i talk about dangerous things, had to go to the office when i talked about the 1993 bombing.
Btw, have you ever learned any foreign languages? Cause i think you'd get sucked into the vortex real quick, lol.
PS: I dont like talking about natural disasters that much because im Christian and it makes me sad.
That school was stupid, the whole point of education is to raise awareness and gain and understanding of issues, and broaden your mind, nor censor it.
And I've tried learning French but I'm not very good at it, though I find it a beautiful language.
It's okay to talk about natural disasters if you are a Christian. Just don't get too freaked out.
Yeah well most agnostics will usually jump on you if you say that you're Christian and are talking about natural disasters. I've tried learning French before, but i really don't like the way it sounds, i've also learned parts of German, Japanese and Russian.
I also read the atlas ;)
