finally after two years, when i was four, a doctor decided to do an endoscopy, where they put a tube down my throat to take a piece of my intestines for a biopsy. my anesthesia wore off and i woke up in the middle of the procedure, and they just left me awake. back then no one even knew what it was, and people have only become aware of it in the past 2-3 years. i've been dealing with it for 15 years now, and it really bothers me how people think it's no big deal. it's anything but simple.

what is she talking about "a simple blood test"? when i was two i became deathly ill, and i stayed that way for two years. i went into malnutrition, and i looked like one of those starving children on those commercials; skin and bones, distended belly. i was basically starving to death because my body couldn't handle what i was eating. no doctor could figure out what was wrong with me.

@lotusblossom15 That's terrible. :/ I just found out last year that I had celiac disease after loosing 20 pounds rapidly, crying on the floor for hours clenching my stomach in pain,could see every bone in my body and my doctor only thought I had acid re-flux. But I got the blood test and there's no false positives. She's right about a simple blood test, it's not that hard to test for the antibodies that cause it. My count for it was over 30 which is really bad D:

I think i have Celiac Disease, but I'm afraid of getting tested and being told I'm not. I might be gluten intolerant, and I don't think they can test for that... only celiac..

I'm afraid of being told crazy yet again when explaining my symptoms, also because I'm 21 yrs old and am told not to complain....

Thumbs up for the announcement, although "a simple blood" test is only half the story. To get a full diagnosis, one also needs to go through a biopsy. I've heard of people whose blood test doesn't even show that they have the condition, although they do. Either way, it's important to get the word out about the condition. I was diagnosed when I was about one year old. By the time the diagnosis came, I was about to die just because a lot of doctors did not know what was wrong with me.

Celiac disease has also been linked to blood sugar abnormalities(hypoglycemia, diabetes, etc.) and weight gain/obesity. Kudos to this woman for raising awareness of this debilitating autoimmune disease that is probably harming more people than one might think.

The statistics are only a guess at the POTENTIAL genetic cases like the 1 in 133 bullshit what that means is that only 1 in 133 has the dq 2.5 or the lesser dq 8 gene but that doesn't necessarely mean that because they have the gene that that they have it.

Celiac's is a disease that is not only highly misunderstood but virtually unknown.  When I was diagnosed and told people about it people didn't have the slightest idea what I was talking about. There are many websites now that explain what Celiac Disease is. Google them.

I have had symptoms for 5 years..one thing was that if I gorged myself in an evening, the next morning I would wake up with my body--mostly the sides of my torso and thigh muscles but on bad days it would even be in my calves--just tender to the touch
