1080 works but it does not get 100% so if the nz tax payer wonts to keep paying . doc should consentrate on the smaller reserves and off shore island and possum can be controled throught trapping since there is a fur trade back . i trap a few in the tararuas and see tui fantails woodpeigeon as for farms boundary poison bait station work well. some pro 1080 dont care about the conservation they just profit from the contracts etc at the taxpayers expence , trappers cost the taxper nothing.

It disturbs me very much when today people can use a poison like 1080 indiscriminantly causing such wide spread suffering among wild animals and domesticated too , and especially dogs its sheer lunacy . PLEASE BAN THIS CRUEL SUBSTANCE ( 1080 ) FOR GOOD OF EVERY LIVING CREATURE AND MANKIND !

According to my book of Extinct NZ birds, written by Alan Tennyson the main causes of bird extinction in NZ are, in order, Humans, Rats and dare I mention it, the sacred NZ cat. The Possum, that gets all the attention is at the bottom of the list (14th),DOC tells us that 1080 doesn't affect these 3(wtf?)How do they expect us to believe anything they say. It is time DOC got its shit together and stop telling porkies. And why have they taken the water warning of the 1080 poison signs?

@jl121982 Anyone who really thinks that using 1080 in New Zealand is a smart thing, needs a reality check. It is a deadly poison! It doesn't just kill animals. it leaches into the soils, the rivers and the land in general. Your land! Your children's land and so on! For heavens sake we are s***ing in our own backyard. Wake up you people. Do the math. To suggest there is no better way to deal with pests is ignorant.

I'm doing a school assigment and I am hoping people watching this can answer a few questions for me.

1. what are the biggest problems you have with 1080? and

2. What aspects of your life/personality do you think influenced you into disliking 1080 as a means of possum control?

well #1 is that it kills every thing and the anything thats come it contact with that animal

#2 I pig hunt with a pack of dogs and if they bite into a possum or a pig that has been poisoned with 1080 then there is a very high risk that they will be poisoned and as a hunter to have to shoot a dog to put a dog out of its misery that you have trained up from a pup and spent time with that dog every day for years is not something you ever want to have to do.

In 1999 it was estimated that there were, give or take a few, 60 million possums in N.Z.

Half a billion dollars and with a reported 90% kill rate there is an estimated 70 million possums in N.Z. in 2009 I'm not a mathematician but something aint right here. I don't know what the answer to this problem is but I don't think this is it.

it is understandable if deer are in plague propportions to be culled but this is a fukin disgrace not just at the waste of good venison but the suffering of the beast, hunters are the best control method
