I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS!!!!!! Sanborn is the GREATEST SAX player alive.. and my son is a professional! I love his sound ,such talent is unrivaled.. thank you so much!
@KLRwashere I got this in a form of cassette and CD AKA Straight to the heart :) since I was in a collage and this is one of my fav.
@kalerka I went to Japan 3 times it was not available even at Tower Record nor Used CD store chain. Last attempt was two week ago via friends could not find it. Thanks anyway for your kind comment.
Of all forms of media, I had this on a "Laserdisc" back in the day when that was the new thing. I've been hoping they would release this on bluray. I can only hope I guess. I haven't been able to find this anywhere.
Hyrum Bullock was my mothers good friend. she still has his denim jacket from when he was in rehab, with a note in the pocket saying he will be going out for a movie and perhaps some icecream afterwards. its so sad that he passed away the other year, such a unique style, and many beleive he was better than hendrix.
@iatelilwayne hey I don't know a single person that would say Hiram was better than Hendrix, I loved Hirams approach to music and his tone and he will be sorely missed, but please don't get on the comparing 'dis to dat' train because it will only end up getting derailed.
This is real music from real performers playing their instruments live on stage. And it don't get no better than that.. I remember seeing clips of this on the old "Night Flight" series on USA Network back in 1984, and maybe one day someone will release this on DVD. David and the band were in "the zone" and I love the way it was shot in black and white. Excellent work all around.
He always dedicated every album to his son, Johnathon Sanborn, so why not dedicate a song to his daughter, Lisa? Immensely beautiful, especially on his 99' album, Inside!
Jonathan is David's only child, who was born when he was only 20. David's now 64. I saw him out here in Fresno, CA on 2/24/10 during his West Coast tour to promote his new CD "Only Everything" which is the title track he wrote for his first grandchild, Genevieve, born about 8 months ago. David was phenomenal!! It was an honor to be in his presence that evening -- one I'll never forget. David seems like a sweet man, very down to earth. Amazingly, I've been listening to him since '79/80. :)
Wow, ilovegoodsax, you totally blew my mind, I didn't know any of this other information(heck, Wikipedia didn't even say half the stuff you just said). I know that people get under the impression that he might be some sort of bitter a**hole simply because of his gift, but David really does seem like a gentleman, on and off stage. That's really beautiful about his first grandchild, he's a special person and he truly deserves that honor. Again, thanks for looking out, real music never dies...
David talked between songs & even cracked a couple of jokes! There was a meet-n-greet after the show which he encouraged us all to stop by & say "hi." My big regret is that I did not stay behind to meet/thank him for the joy he's provided me over the years. I'm sure all CD's now will be dedicated to Genevieve. You can see Jonathan by typing in Healing Power/Night Music. A minute into the clip the camera pans to the right. He's the bass player in the green shirt. Same dark features as his dad.
@ilovegoodsax I have had the chance a few years ago in Amsterdam after the show.
It was one of my best kept memories of an artist. He is so easy and relax. I did not have my camera with me but he did sign my CD!!..what more could I ask this is areaction from yamirel in the Netherlands.
@yamirel88 Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm looking forward to another chance to see him play & meet him after the concert. I will not pass up the opportunity again! I've seen lot of sax acts over the years but DS is truly remarkable & in a class by himself. He kick started my love affair with the sax back in 1980 when I was only 19 & would hear "Carly's Song" on the radio, & is still a favorite of mine. I've been hooked on him ever since. Peace & good wishes from California, USA :-)
@willardlockejr, I totally agree. As a matter of fact, I have the "Straight to the Heart" album, and your right, he played this song as if Stevie Wonder himself were singing with all his might! Still, I like the "Inside" album version of this song the best, this one is just my second fav!
@Gxyz222 Since you mentioned "Straight to the Heart", you should check out the original version of the song (written by Marcus Miller) on his 1982 cd/album "As We Speak". It's a shorter version, but still very effective. It's one of the few albums where D.S. plays the soprano sax on several tunes (take that Kenny G). The new sax players could learn a lot from Mr. Sanborn.
@willardlockejr ...Thnks I love this reaction!!By the way I have got most of what David has made and its always fab. to hear him on the sax!! yamirel in Holland
david sanbourne is just one of the best alto sax players of all time, he has that certen sound to his saxaphone. lisa is for shur my most favorate song, i am practising lisa on the alto sax and i am only twelve.
As far as I know this was only ever available on video. The video of the concert was broadcast several times on UK TV in the 1990's. This is where I acquired the footage. It has not been commercially available for years. The only help I can give is that the concert was called 'Love and Happiness', directed by Jean-Marie Périer ,issued in 1986 by Warner Reprise Video.
Apart from the musicians listed, The Average White Band's Hamish Stuart does vocals on the title track.
@DrStrabismus There is a DVD version of this video. I picked it up in Japan a couple of years ago. The title of the concert and the footage is all the same. The DVD only plays on Region 2 players. If you're looking for it, try checking the Japanese amazon.co.jp or cdjapan.co.jp
you can just use "realplayer downloader" it comes with normal realplayer'.....player...this lets you keep the stuff on youtube, remember to add .. &fmt=18 to the url at the top to get the high quality. I do this with stuff i cant buy, and i can strip the video from it using garageband, hehe
just go on google and search youtube to mp3 and copy the link from this url and paste it and convert the file to an mp3 then you can have it on your ipod or whatever :)
@gnembhard "Lisa" originally appears on Hideaway (album) which was released in either late '79 or early '80. I still have the vinyl that I bought back in '81. "Lisa" also appears on one of Sanborn's greatest hits album released in the mid-90's. ;-)
I have to agree with Tigorman66. Straight to the Heart was his best. It was pretty much a compilation of things he did previously. The version of "Straight to the Heart" on that CD is a beast.
@kaojing1 But...the concert CD is very nice. You probably would enjoy it. This song... I mean composition-- is featured on it. It is an unforgettable piece.
easily Dave's best album,Straight to the Heart has a mix of live songs(Smile is just off the hook awesome)and Lisa is on it,one of my favorite albums(that's what it was when i purchased it,vinly through and through!)
Straight To The Heart is by far the best album David Sanborn has ever produced. The album's version of Lisa was the second song I have ever heard(first being It's You from the Voyager album) from Dave and strangely I heard it on The Weather Channel cable network in 1987. I didn't know it was performed by David until 1996. Straight From The Heart's version of Lisa is by far David's best performance on the sax oon any album.
