  • Wow, this is the Moody Blues crown jewels right here.....

  • BRITISH ARTIST GREAT

  • I couldn't see that live because I was just born that day… So at least I have an idea of what I have missed…. Wonderful!!!

  • Pure legends of rock then and now

  • This one & Melancholy Man by Mike Pinder are some most deep & beautiful songs ever written in modern day music!!!!!!

  • I feel sorry for people who can't get into a song like this.

  • For all the people who think the Beatles are the best, well, the only possible explanation I can think of is they just must not be aware of Moody Blues songs like this!

  • this is sweet!

  • @cloudjia Esta performance dos The Moody Blues é,como diriam alguns,100% live! Nada de playback ; apenas 5 músicos talentosos tocando um tema,na minha opinião,bastante complexo de executar ao vivo para aquela época!

  • The friend that gave this album to me once told me this is their geatest album. He may have been right...

  • One of the most beautiful songs ever written.

  • @Trondoc Ray was a great flute player and pioneer in the use of the same in Rock music along with Mike Pinder with the use of the Mellotron! They defined the sound of The Moody Blues! Probably, this was the first time they performed this complex music live, but i have heard other performances of this suite, especially between 1972 and 74,and the duet of Ray´s flute with Mike´s Mellotron was simply amazing!

  • @pauloalves81 We'll have to agree to disagree. I love Pinder, (I have restored a ton of Mellotrons), but Ray would be the first to admit that he was by no means a great flute player. He was, however, a great member of the Moody Blues and it's hard to think of them without him. By the way, this song is simple to play and easy to duplicate. In its time, it was magical. I saw them perform it twice.

  • Thanks for this step back in time, it was brilliant!

  • ..... looks like 6 haven't heard ..... I wonder what is between those morons ears ... any clues?

  • I can hardly believe they played this mind-bogglingly difficult piece live without trying to play at least two instruments each simultaneously and got away with it. I think that Mike is playing the piano part on the Mellotron here. Fantastic. Thanks for posting.

  • Pinder brings a unique sound to the band with this song , melancholy man and others..

  • the instrumental part reminds me of a bugs bunny cartoon I saw years and years ago.

  • UNREAL.

  • Attempting this studio production live was very gutsy back in these early days of electronica. I thank whoever unearthed this footage and uploaded it.

  • This is a true gem!! What an absolute fantastic find here. Thanks for uploading this!! I so love this song!! The Moodies music just digs right into my soul!! Such beauty and true emotion and so powerful!! The Moodies are truly a phenomenal band of all time!! Their music has touched so many souls through the years and continue to do so today!! Pure Brilliance!! Their music is like magic to the soul!! Just beautiful!! The Moodies forever my friends!! :)) ♥

  • god------------- thanks for this

  • The Moodies are truly underrated

  • Oh to be able to time travel back to when music like this was being performed.

  • To have come out of my teens with this music, and be awed by them as I still am is a marvel. In my teens I never had a chance to see or hear them perform live (until Plus 5 came out), I marvel at how the internet and people such as you posting such stuff I have always wished for, Thanks! Back then I could not imagine they could possible do any of their stuff live. Wrong.

  • Oh it is times like this I dream either for a time machine or to have been born in the 50's like my Mother. How anyone can rate the rap/bubblegum pop/scream-o music of "My Generation" *cough*isitevenmusic?*cough* above such wonderful artists as these confounds me, and how many of my peers call this "stupid" confuses me even further. Thou I admittedly confused my Father as well when he realized the first three CD's in my car were Moody Blues...as my parents music choice is fundamental different

  • Magic! Thanks for this incredible post.

  • A Voyage....Freedom....Legends....From The Beginning.......

  • awesome recording of an awesome song! Can't for the life of me understand why only <68k views for this , but 20 kajillion for "Alaska-Nebraska" or a multitude of other teeny bopper talentless clown's.....

  • It's grand to see such footage!

  • Lovely. What a wonderful set of 5 musicians. Down to 3 but still going strong! Love this sound.

  • great footage!!!

  • I loved Pinder, such a moody artist

  • You touched infinity?

    then that was no infinity.

  • wow a piece of history!

    its a rock masterpiece!

    i love this concept album

it makes me fly away and touch infinity

  • This is such a haunting melody. A true work of art! they are musical geniuses to be able to translate this poetry into music!

  • Psychadelia ...

    Cream, BBHC, Tea Company ...

  • I can really see where Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, and even some of the modern progressive bands today got some of their inspiration. Hell, alot of Opeth's mellow songs could be inspired by Moody Blues music. Great music, and love the vocals, expessially Justin's amazing voice, and Pinder's mellotrons are beautiful and epic....

  • That's proto-prog for you, though this is the same year as King Crimson and Yes' debut albums. But trying to pull off this stuff live back in '69 was no small task, when all Pinder had was the one mellotron. It was only a couple years later that people like Tony Banks and Rick Wakeman were sporting 4 or 5 keyboards to play arrangements like this.

  • I wish they would have started with "The Dream".

  • first flute part sounds like french horn.

john takes the place of a cymbol.

is that yodelling I hear at the end?

    giant catepillar on his face.

the guitar back up really makes the song.

    wow, wow.

  • One of my top 5 moody blues songs... absolutely enchanting...

  • who said that the moodies are not prog enough - Listen to this !

  • Horribly wonderful.

  • an incredible song!

  • Gotta love Mike Pinder! He was the quiet driving force behind their music in the 67 - 73 era (which was their best). Sorry to say, but I've always been largely disappointed in Thomas and Edge, live and in compostion.

  • Ray Thomas making an extra special effort to say: "Have you heard?" rather than his usual "'Ave you 'eard?"

  • pinder had always the unique tracks of the moodies. great !!

  • Great to see this old video of the original band playing.

  • A "unique" version of the songs that made me a Moodies fan in the first place. Mike in top form. yeah

  • Super real, super flawed, like being there, stoned and all! Seems like yesterday. I never heard a track where Ray makes as many mistakes as he does in this song. There's something endearing about it however. It's so genuine that it's easy to look the other way. You have to have a soft spot for Capricorn guys... that's Ray....

  • A Mike Pinder classic...a truly under-rated artist. He and Ray we so integral....the show has gone on without them, but it's not the same. We thank you both for a great voyage !~!

  • @dupontarc ......... they were there from the gitgo ..... better be integral!

  • .....Legendary From The Beginning....

  • Eternity's waiting..

  • One hell of a tune/song to play live, wish I could have been there at the time, great posting.

  • Scatter good seed in the fields

  • Every Chance I get!

  • Awesome to listen to this old recording with Mike Pinder still part of the group (thanks for sharing it). This is serious music-making, totally transporting, as always, for the unforgettable and ultra-talented Moody Blues.

  • Wow, what a task to perform this very complex piece live and in this shabby old place. Great piece of MB history.

  • look at pinder work that mellotron!! he concentrating, not like a keyboard today. Its more then just hitting the notes its like making the love to a very demanding and temperamental ( or just plain mental)woman. ( sorry for the offhanded comments but the shoe seemed to fit LOL)

  • What year is this?

  • 1969

  • heh heh... "69".

    FUK YA BRO!! OW!!

  • It's amazing to see bands really feel their music. Just get lost in the notes and keep going... I love it.

  • anybody got a little good mexican weed

  • No, I don't have "any 'GOOD?' Mexican Weed" (SIC) As if their were such a thing! However, I have some good Oregon Green Chronic. It's Mine! Mine! ALL MINE!!! I'm a happy Miser!

  • Musical Genuises!!!!!

  • I watch this video every month just to be sure it is real...lol.

The highs the lows...the stoners, the sincerety.....so nice...

    kutter

  • Moodies still red hot. It takes real skill to be at the top of the game this many years.

  • This song opened my eyes to the fact that

I'm a bigot sometimes. Since then, I've tried to be more tolerant

  • Of all the songs on OTTOAD, this suite is one of the most beautiful medleys that I have ever heard. It is an enchanting, almost bewitching suite. Thank you for posting this one.

    Love, Jusfriend

  • Interesting to note that this is a very 'rare' performance..not sure they ever played this live much....the studio version of :"The Voyage" is in (Cm) yet they performed it here in (Dm)..can anyone guess why?..it seems a whole step higher?

  • I believe a finicky mellotron is the key change culprit here.

  • This song means alot to me. Thanks for posting this.

  • ....What A Handsome Electric Group Of Men....Legendary From The Beginning.... Moodys....Have You Heard....Eternity .... Is Your Fortune....

  • I'm back for more. Thanks for this great and rare piece of footage. At my age, I'll take Have You Heard to really be a song about Love, more than anything else.

  • I saw them in 74 in Inglewood Calif. I would echo what everyone else said about the smoke, etc, but what really impresses me about this rare video is how much we get to see of Mike Pinder playing the awesome mellotron. This is how they looked when I saw them...Fantastic! PoZeek

  • Makes sense! After almost 30 years, I finally know the words here. Thanks MoodyGirl. Man!

  • I saw them play for the 1st time in 1972- dropped some heavy acid with a girl I met about 5 hours earlier.

the show was fantastic- One more time to Live, Melancholy Man , Eternity Road, Tortois and Hare etc.. oh yeah Gypsy..

so much marijuana smoke you didn need to bring any and the mellotron was so loud it made its own wind.

    legendary- never will forget it...

  • I love your story. I have to tell you mine. My cousin and I did some acid at a Moody's concert in 1999. We were in the 4th row. We were having so much fun that someone gave us backstage VIP passes. we went back, said hello to Justin hHyward and ate and drank on the Moody Blues all night long. It was magical. Peace.

  • Right around the 2:30 mark, the Mellotron reminds me of the band Gracious!...

  • Is it "scattered birdseed in the fields" or

" [?] birds sing in the fields"?

  • saw them at boston garden in 72. Still love em.

don't remember much though-too much smoke in there

  • Fantastic album, the Have Your Heard suite is my favourite of all their works. It's a shame the audio is so poor.

  • For a long time now I've wanted to see a video of Pinder singing this song.

Wow, here it is! Thanks for sharing it!

  • having been a teen at the time of future past, I first heard the album blaring out of my girlfriends older sisters room while in the back yard trying to get a kiss from my then girl. The very first strains stopped me cold. What beautiful music, I was entranced, my girl was a bit ticked offr but the Moodies changed my musical life. I havent been the same since. and she dumped me because of it. Ya cant win em all, her loss..

  • I wonder if Mikes still got that mighty mk2 tron? What a monster of a keyboard and I think the sound was never bettered even by the M400.

  • was the M400 the white melotrons you see in the mid '70's?

  • yes , much smaller but not all were white. King Crimson had M400 covered in blue carpet!

  • Pinder was a musical mastermind of the group i think. his compositions have the most innovative, experimental elements of the entire works they made. with his talent and direction. the group could be 'progressive' at that time. i don't know what he's doing these days but he left big legacy. thanks for the rare vid. :-)

  • Threshold of a Dream and Days of Future Past are two of the Greatest Albums of all times along with Umma Gumma by Pink Floyd.

  • what a band

    i love them, man.

  • flute

  • How could these guys NOT be in the RnR Hall of Fame?

They are one of the top groups of all time!!!

    PUT THEM IN NOW!!!

  • forgotten how many times i drifted off to who knows where listening to this

  • There will never be another band like the Moody Blues!

  • The Moodies and the Beatles, 2 bands where the whole is greater than the sum of their parts. Justin is their heart,Mike is their soul, Graeme is their energy, Ray is their whimsy and John is their head and the glue that holds it all together. They absolutely belong in the Hall of Fame, unfortunately I fear they'll never make it unless the above 5 can find a way to come together 1 more time to remind everyone just how good and relevant they were/are!!

  • I think they've done more than enough to make it into the hall of fame. Bunch of BS.

  • They'll be one of those bands that makes it in after their time is long gone. Unfortunately, there's no honor in that! They need to be in now!

  • i saw them do this live in 71 at msg. great concert. very very smokey.

  • Great !

  • I still believe this is Pinder's tour de force.

  • Yes, but don't forget Melancholy Man. I know some musicians who think Melancholy Man was the Moodies best song...

  • Ray was a big contributor in their early days...

  • spider,

He most certainly was. That great man is missed!

  • Yes, what a voice. You know, if Ray could have played, say, rhythm guitar, he'd been so much more of a presence on the other songs. It's kind of hard to watch videos and he hasn't much to do.

  • I never thought I'd see this amazing song on video. Yes its not "polished" like the studio version but wow.

  • Quite pleasant, isn't it!

  • Me growing up in the 1960's in the US for the last 46 years my parents bought all the MB LP's as they were 'word of mouth' at any University.. We did'nt get to see them live and not until the WEB could I have been blessed with witnessing this 'footage'. Iam such a huge MB fan but there was never any movies or video's out(in the US) of their early years until just recently... Thankyou for sharing!

  • I will never get tired of watching live moody blues clips!

  • Watching their performance is my dream! There'll never be a Moody Blues again.

  • It is a Mellotron MKII, not a Chamberlin, nor a Mellotron M400.

  • Great Video =)

    I want pinder back. =(

  • THE MOODY BLUES:

    Justin Hayward: Guitar

    John Lodge: Bass, latter whooshes

Ray Thomas: Flute, background vocals, first whooshes

    Mike Pinder: Chamberlin, lead vocals

    Graeme Edge: Awesome percussion

Yes, that was definitely a Chamberlin and not a Mellotron.

  • What are the identifying marks? I'd swear it was the M400. My grandfather actually owned one up until the very early 80's when it broke down completely (capstans crusted over and the tape stretched past repair).

  • I feel inspired to do something great when I hear this.

  • Probably the most textbook "Progressive" piece ever done by the MB's. Actually sounds a lot like a track you might encounter on the first Crimson album. This has to be the last track I'd ever have thought the Moodies would attempt to play live, so kudos to the Brummie lads for their bravery. Great stuff.

  • I know what you are saying, but they had to be able to play this one live in 1969... it was off their latest album, and they'd only had two previous albums at this point. Pinder goofs a bit on the early vocals, but other than that, this is a gem.

  • Awesome. The studio version was so perfect that I had to keep replacing my album because those pops and scratchy sounds would always show up sooner or later. CD's put an end to that practice. Great, Great, clip.

  • Hey Berry,

You seem to know a lot about the Moodys, why did Pinder leave....?

  • Hey Berry, Re: Pinder

The sexy part I don't know...but he does have a damn cool voice! Hey what about that wicked comb-over??

    :)

  • Hey Berry,

REALLY, Jerry Reed huh...? I'm a straight guy so most of the guys that chicks find hot always kind of amazes me anyway, but Jerry Reed!

    :)

  • This vid is great! I didn't know that Pinder sang lead ? The Moodys are so original, to this day there is no one else that sounds like them!

  • Are you guys talkin about Jerry REED..??? or Lou Reed??

  • Taking the film quality, and video quality of that day.

    Considering everyone is stoned immaculate.

This song takes you into that cosmic level that the

Moodies experimented with, then denied they could

    go their.

The talent was remarkable. A mix of genius, ability,

and then the truth of their endeavour.

forever strive for perfection in your endeavours....

    kutter

  • Hi Berry

Mike is deafinitely the nucleus of the group, you can see working in its Mellotron, he was the best musician and and true innovate the MB sound in the 70

  • berr,

There are several clips from the Bandit movies here on youtube. I check 'em out from time to time. Like to see my Sweet Jerry Baby!! LOL!!!

  • berr,

OMG I had a crush on him too!!! LOL!!!! I agree with ya!! Funny man/singing man/guitar playing man/ sexy man!!! I've got the semi in the garage for routine service, gettin it ready for our trip to VA!!! LOL!!!

  • Berr,

I'll run "interferrence' for ya. Like Jerry Reed did in Smokey and the Bandit. I'll drive a big semi and distract all the cops so you can drive like a maniac all the way to VA. roflmbo!!!!!

  • Berr,

I like 'em "well done". Sorry, just couldn't help myself. XD!!!

  • Nothing wrong with your ears sweet berry. Just techy trivia. I love it too. Sometimes just can't help myself. Thanks for indulging. It's just so nice to share my facination and awe of all aspects of their wonderfull works with others as loyal and obcessed as myself. PS. Is "Deep" on Tube in any form? Can't find it.

  • Now THIS is live! Correction! The pitch bends were done on a Hammond.

  • A prime example of the hellish nature of the "Mello-Tron Beast". Sooo, out of tune..but facinating. If it was like mine (and obviously so) I think it rarely was quickly retunable after the pitch modulations Mike did in this song using voltage control. The servo lock speed capstan motor was not available at this point. Allways clashed with Ray's stuff.

  • I love this song... I love this album... This is raw Moody Blues!

  • Berry,

XD!!! Ray had better be especially careful of the state of OHIO, cause if he would happen to be anywhere near, OHH!! Where I am, I am only a little over an hour's drive from Kentucky, West Virginia, and Indiana. So I have a great "vantage point" for my ATTAAAAAAACCCKKKKK!!!!!! ROFLMBO!!! Watch out Ray!!

  • I could also make it to Michigan or Pennsylvania in about 3 1/2 hours. :DDD If I knew HE was there, probably FASTER!!!!!!

  • And Ray's at 00:53 would feel SWEET on my lips!! lol!!

Oh, we are so naughty! I really hope they are reading this. I seriously do!! XD

  • Thanks Berrygirl.

I like very much other English keyboarists like Richard Wright, who also used the mellotron on A Soucerfull of Secrets Album in 1968.

Beside, in my opinion, one of the best works with this marvelous instrument belongs to Mr. Rick Wakeman in his "White Rock" Album.

  • Very cool -- worth two dozen lip syncs.

  • I wonder if this is on a DVD?

  • Mike Pinder is a geniuos. He is one of the best keyboarditsin England ever!!!

This is one of my favorite songs from Mike and it wrote it in 1968!!

Here I could listen the Mellotron and also hamnond Organ, but he is playing only 1 instrument?

  • I think the same as you about Mike Pinder; He is really a genius!Yes,Mike only plays one instrument:The Mellotron! In this piece he used tron flutes, organ and 3 violins!

  • Where's for my lady?

  • I agree. I heard Ray sing that beauty at the Royal Albert Hall in 2002 and knew it was the last time I'd hear him sing it. He sung it superbly. The hairs on my neck stood up. Amazing song!

  • Yes I wish they would post For My Lady. Even the audio would be better than nothing.

  • It was a seminal event. The Moodies were a "studio band" and it was impossible, using early '70s technology and the complexity of their music to sound nearly as good live. Just like this video, they were out of tune a lot, largely due to the mellotron. It was impossible to keep in tune (I had one). They were better live when Pinder was playing the organ as the organ stays in tune. Still, I remember that soaring mellotron more than anything.

  • That was great but the audio is dreadfully low; can you fix that and re-upload?

  • I saw them in '72. They did this peice and it was in quad sound with speaker columns in each corner so you could hear the instrumental part swirling around your head. This was practically unheard of in the '70's. I also remember 20,000 people leaving at the end of the show in almost total silence. Never has that been the case with any other band I saw. That got my attention!

  • Good memories!!!!! Thanks

  • This is so cool. I've never seen these songs performed live before. thanks for the post. It doesn't matter if Ray is stoned or not, he is the coolest flute player ever. If it wasn't for him, i wouldn't be playing the flute today.

  • WOw this is awesome!

  • Whatever you could say about the Moody Blues one thing is true - they were sincere. That alone is more than you could say about 98% of music today.

  • Thank you!

  • The best band doing a not-so-best set, but still great

  • Poor Ray... he never mastered the art of playing the flute while stoned.

    Cool video!

  • Really rare and good!

  • mike is the real mellotron god. and his songs are allways so awesome good,

  • This song is to Mike Pinder what 'Legend of a Mind' is to Ray Thomas - Both absolute masterpieces!

  • Another social document, but amazing quality for 38 years old. Monster moustache, Mike - Jason King eat your heart out. But he was pretty good on the old Melotron, wasn't he. A class performance from the whole band here, with no overdubs or miming. This is a real gem for any Moodies fan.

  • stache was making up for the soon to come baldness, unfortunately

  • I love old Moodies, even if it was maddeningly incosistent. This might be my favorite song of all time, however. Pinder and Lodge were especially brilliant.

  • Does Graeme ever show his face?

  • check the other moody videos on utube you'll see graeme in action with face lol!

  • about time 2.40?

  • This IS incredible and around 38 years old. More incredible is they are still rocking, on tour as I speak.

    Go Moodies!!!!

  • Amazing video. Amazing talent.

  • Wow! I saw another video at this place, but this one is great!
