Work is Force measured in newtons times distance is measured in meters. so if it take a jet engine 10 seconds to move a 12,000kg block 10m. you can accurately measure how much horsepower is being put out. I agree comparing a jet engine to a combustion engine is unfair, but it's entirely accurate.

Choose the least convenient design and try to make it go as fast as it wil go. Why not start with something more convenient and make it go a lot faster with less effort?
