You know these ducks are the most STUPID specie I have ever seen! They don't say next to the dam or whatever, like other ducks. The are on a collison course and just keep on walking. We had some at the Groenkloof Campus of the University of Pretoria and the mother just keep on walking straight to a busy highway. I have monitored her for a few hours and realised the chicks are not going to make it! I simply took them from her and gave them to a rehabilitation centre - now they are safe!
Fantastic! This reminds me of when I rescued a gosling that was lost and I got him back to his family. I happened one week ago and man. duckilings, goslings and cygnets are so adorable.

I'm not so sure ducks can't count, just that they don't always. When my ducks were broody, one duck swiped one of the other's eggs. She came back to the nest, sat down, started turning them, then reached under the other duck and took back an egg. (Don't know if it was hers....but you get the idea.) FUNNY!
actualy.... birds dont have a good sence of smell. Touching them is ok. thats just a rumor. If they dont take them back its usualy becuse they might be sick, weak, hurt or they dont want to go through the troubel of takeing care of it. but its a good idea not to mess with them too much, or they get stressed out. :)
Ducks and other bird do not have a keen sense of smell, so it would be okay to give them a boost up the curb. Cute vid, nice sentiment, well meaning people. 5*
This video was wonderful. I was cheering along with you guys for the laggers to make it. Great music, too. So much fun! It's common in Florida to see random families of wildlife hanging out on the busy interstates and such, and cars veering wildly to avoid them. heehee. It's nice to see when they make it safely.
LOL. the whole point is that they can't touch it cause the mother would abandon it..it'd have their scent.. they did help by making sure it didn't run to the road.
Ducks (as well as the majority of birds) do not have a keen sense of smell. Touching/handling the ducks will not cause the mother to abandon them, contrary to popular myth.
actually, the thing "dont touch baby burds cause the mother wot take it back" is false. birds have very poor senses of smell, and wont generally notice if the baby smells different. im guessing people just made hat up to advise people not to disturb baby birds in the wild
Great vid. You guys did a good job with the music, the commentary, etc. Can you answer this...ducks can't count so how did the mother duck know one duck was still missing (was the chick making noise that the mother duck could hear)?
Well, the momma started walking into the bushes there, and heard her baby peeping so she sat there ans waited for it to hop up. I guess that it's just momma instinct. :)

Some bird moms will even adopt babies, it depends on that particular bird's temperment. - you have to do this because some bird moms can be kind of unmotherly
The touching thing is an old wive's tale - I've raised canaries, ducks, quails and other birds. We always touch them to check how they are developing (and play with them). Often have to push the little mommy off her nest to look at the eggs (and touch them) to make sure they're viable. You don't need to use a towel either, just make sure you wash your hands before eating after you touch them.
thats a lie, birds CAN'T smell human scent, maybe you should read more about animals? I RAISED ducks and geese, and I worked with them, the whole "Ducks can smell your scent on their babies and will dis-own them" is a myth and NOT TRUE, birds will even take in orphanged babies that are covered in the smell of humans
Great job saving the little duckies:) Though you could have picked them up as a mother duck's maternal instinct is too strong to be deterred by human scent.

actually.. birds besides vultures have a very poor sense of smell so it is actually okay to pick them up,,, but i would recommend using a towel
