Did you know that this is a drug song? Junkies used to buy their fix, and it was given to them in a kid's toy balloon (deflated), and they'd carry it home in their mouths.
Timeless classic. Sounds other worldly. This song was playing in my mothers hospital room when she was going into labor. I was born the year this came out!!
This song was used on a Trans World Airline commercial back in the day. My Dad worked for the airlines for 35 years, This song reminds me of traveling and growing up at SFO airport....
Despite the fact the 1960's were a troublesome decade (Vietnam, JFK, Robert Kennedy. Dr King and the civil rights movement), its music was truly unforgivable. It reflected a sweet, heartwarming and purely artistic sound that is missed nowadays. And it is not because today's artist are bad, no, is because the 60's era was a time were many things were discovered and many liberal ways to think. "Today is all about ratings, and a compitition for how many hits you have in the tube.
Back 44 years ago each musical group or solo act played and sang songs in their own individual style. Today's music is "cookie cutter" material. There is no soul and no heart in today's music like there was from the music of the late 60's to the mid 80's.
Listening to this song brings me back to when life was fun and care-free, just like the fun and care-free sound of this song.
@civlwarnut218 Not true. Motown - among other labels - were factories where songs were written for any number of acts in a studio's stable. Only a handful of people actaully sold songs and most American mainstream acts; Sedaka, C King, Diamond, Bacharat, Dylan wrote for scores of artists and there were plenty of pre-fabricated bands. (Monkees, 3 Dog Night, et al). Years from now, the kids will be saying about their music what you are saying about ours. We romanticise because get got old.
@arkady714 Yes, the Brill Building songwriters were a type of popular music factory. But here's where you are wrong: "Years from now, the kids will be saying...what you are saying about ours." Those songwriters that you disparage wrote music that is far more interesting than the crap that is corporately chosen and controlled from the get-go. Take any musical element: harmony, melody, meter, rhythm, phrasing...60s to mid-80s music is more varied and, by any musical measure, just better.
absolutlely timeless, if you heard this song on your car radio today, you would want to pull over and wonder where in the hell did this masterpiece come from. The number one fell good song of all time!
I grew up with this song since i was a kid in the 80's and has been one of my favorite songs and i loved it how they used in American Pop (1981 animated movie)
Credit must be given to the great Jimmy Webb, the guy who wrote this song. He also wrote "McArthur Park," "Galveston," "Wichita Lineman." One of the great songwriters of our era.
This has been one of my favorites for a very long time. Such a wonderful, happy, upbeat song, unlike the dark and angry garbage that gets inflicted upon us so often.
Every teenage couple has a "song". "UP UP AND AWAY" was, and still is, "our song". At a prom in 1968, we went with other people to the prom. When the orchestra began playing this song, my boyfriend left his date, and my date stranded on the dance floor, and said, "nobody dances to "our song" with her, but me!". That's when I knew we truly were meant for each other, forever. Dating other people couldn't break us up, or "our song" !
@MerleOberon I was a flight attendant for TWA for 35 years!!! My first trip was on a 707...as the passengers boarded, the plane's music system played this song! What memories! Thank you :)
Happiness?!?!?! What a concept!!!!!!!!!!!!! Make's great music too! HERE ARE THE ALTERNATE LYRICS FOR THE HINDENBURG MUSICAL: Would you like to ride in my flammable balloon? Would you like to die in my flammable balloon? We could burn among the stars together, you and I So we can die! We can die! Up, up and away in my flammable, my flammable balloon! The world's a scary place in my flammable balloon. It will burn off your face in my flammable balloon. We can scream along and flail along the fiery sky So we can die! We can die!

"The world's a nicer place in my beautiful balloon"....The world was a nicer place back when this song was a hit. Miss those days. Thanks for posting. Enjoyed this song so much.
I remember the front cover of that album well during my youth in the 1960s. While the names of some of the songs in that album do not immediately come to mind, there are selections that could have made the top 100.
@ALANRLEAKE I agree...California My Way was great. Also...What a Shame that Too Poor To Die and Train Keep Movin were NOT on the album...but only released on 45s. I think they would have been bigger had they been ON the album.
This was the era when music was MUSIC! Not the rehashed, borrowed, disrespectful garbage that is forced into the mainstream today.
