I am a man with several guns... and I would use them on anyone who tried to stop your playing... The fingerpicking is tough... it takes work... I know because I'm terrible at it... you did great Stu.. your hard on yourself like I am... we do this because we love it..... right?
Cheers Jimmy. I have a Burns poetry book I was awarded at school 'cos my class all sang Ye Banks and Braes. Music teacher played it like a dirge. Hated it . I still read the book though. I heard that Jackson rumour too - wonder if it's true?
super neato man!!! hey i'll try and type in the dark - ready... ok yere hgoes plus this keyboard is sooo tiinny cos itd just a netbppk size,,, but thus song sounds hreat man!!! excleent work seriously nice voacals too
@COVEYWOOD - Cheers Piers - first public attempt ( is YT really public? No?) and about 15 hours of practice!. I have read that I need 10, 000 hours of practice to be any good. I may be senile and incontinent by then!
Nicely done Stu. The finger picking definitely adds another dimension to your playing. What you learn on Ukulele can always be taken to the guitar too. You just need to find an extra 2 fingers from somewhere hehe :D
hi Stew. what a fine step forward. the fingerpicking is so appropriate for sensitive lyrics such as these. now then, might start to experiement and practice with inserting whenever it feels right, some hammer ons and pull offs.......and fet slides.........or not. i am really appreciating your recent efforts to expand your talents and my, but you are succeding. be well, chuck.
@chuxtrux I appreciate your encouragement Chuck. Yep it's an important step and now I just have to learn how and when to use it! Hammer on and Off? heard the phrases but not yet chasing them!
Such a lovely melody. The Eddi Reader version makes the tears fa' doon like rain. For a challenge you could try "Ye banks and Braes". There is a stunning version by Holly Tomas which matches Ms Reader for emotional intensity. You did yourself proud and the last verse sounded to me like you choked up when the poignancy of the words hit you. Smashin'
@weegingayin Thanks Ginga. D'you know I've hated Banks and braes since schhool - it was always played like a dirge. I can appreciate the words so much more with maturity - but that dirgeful tune is hard to get over though I admit Holly Thomas was absolutely enchanting. Still can't find a version that does justice to the words.
Good for you, Stew. I am making a similar push to improve my fingerpicking, although I am concentrating on the guitar. I've resisted so long because up to now I've had trouble singing and picking at the same time. It adds a lot of possibilities. You look so comfortable doing this, and you have such a likable voice. Surely you must feel that all the doors are open now. You don't have to avoid certain kinds of songs, and you are great at writing your own. You've arrived!
@songblurred - Hi Don . Yep , the old picking routine does open up more opportunities. Infact I was picking on your most recent post just this afternoon. Next task learn how to integrate it with strums and chunks!
Sounds great, nice to hear you picking! -Steve

Beautiful.
Until Burns day this year I had assumed it was "Aye" fond kiss as in "always".
I heard a rumour that Michael Jackson had recorded an album of Burns songs!
It's on the Guardian website if you google it.
Burns was my 1st inspiration...I have a wee certificate from 1978 for performing his poetry.

Really well done, Stew. This picking works very well with the songs and gives it a lightness you can't easily get with strumming.
