the problem with describing how to pronounce "gy" is that depending on whether you're talking to an american or a brit, they'll have very different ideas of how you should say a word like "during". i think the best way to describe "gy" is somewhere between the end of the words "edge" and "etch" with a barely present "yuh" at the end, like in "yuck"
I'm Adam from Hungary. I love you is Szeretlek in Hungarian. By the way writing is not that difficult coz' (almost) everything is written as is is pronounced. Of course I cannot feel how difficult it is, but there are much more difficult parts:) Anyway if anybody needs help in connenction with the language or decides to come to Hungary, just feel free to ask anything, I'll help you. To sum up, it's great to see, that so many of you are interested in my language:)
I'M Ádám form Hungary. Just to answer your question: I love you is Szeretlek. Writing is not that difficult coz' everything is written as it is pronounced, unlike English:):) If you have any question feel free to ask, and If you decide to come to Hungary I can help you with the language and with getting to know the country and its people. I'm really happy to see that people are so interested in our strange world.
I'M Ádám from Hungary. Just to answer some questions: I love you is: Szeretlek. Writing is not so difficult if you know the sounds because unlike Enlgish everything is written as it is pronounced. PRobably the only easy thing about our languagae:):) By the way if anyone has question in connection with my mothertongue, feel free to ask and if you wish to come to Hungary I can also help you not just in the language but getting to know more about Hungary and the people.
I think GY is better to catch if you try to explain it like the sound what you say in "diD You". I mean when the D and the Y sound together... that's a GY more than the sound J in "jeans"...
Klassz ez a kis nyelvbemutató, de egyáltalán nem magyarázta jól a gy helyes kiejtését.
Az sem tetszett, hogy állandóan furcsának és bonyolultnak nevezte az ékezetes betűket. Mintha valami kínos, fájdalmas dolgot próbálna megmagyarázni...
I love how it says I've probably never seen or heard it before .. that was wrong. But this was right when it said there were a lot of long words .. they make me smile. For example the phrase "A mihamarabi talalkozasig" really amuses me as well as "Mennyibe kerul egy szoba?" I realize I have no accents .. but yeah. I'm going to fail miserably while I'm in Hungary anyways. :P
My dear friend, who created this video course: as PEC00 has also noticed there's a big mistake in this lecture: "gy" mustn't be pronounced like "j" in "jeans" or "G" in "German" (this sound is marked with "dzs" in Hungarian) but like the consonant you pronounce in French "adieu"... sorry, I cannot find any English examples to the pronounciation of this letter at midnight... :) I guess there must be some...
Thank you nagypal333. Actually, a university lecturer wrote it. We get a lot of (usually angry!) feedback from Hungarians about the "gy" sound. This is just a reference as the sound doesn't exist in English (adieu is good but can be pronounced in 2 different ways).
Anyway! You can hear the speaker pronounce it correctly, as he is a native speaker. Thats the best thing to do :)
I'm a native English speaker, but am trying to learn some phrases as I'm off to Hungary shortly. I'm certainly not the person to ask for a definitive answer, but from what I can tell, something like adulation when spoken quickly might be reasonably close.
OK my comment flew in the space:-) I write it again.
welcome TO Hungary = Üdvözöllek MagyarországON
be careful because it is an exception that TO.. = .. ON because in other cases TO is translated as ..HOZ/..HÖZ (this case the word üdvözöllek has to be followed as ..ON in geographical cases)
however pls be careful that TO Hungary doesnt mean MagyarországON. EXCEPTION! it means to Hungary, however welcome/üdvözöllek has to be followed with '..on' but it doesnt mean that gramatically you have to say '..on' whenever you would say 'to..'
Well if someone want to learn hungarian, you should ask a hungarian to teach you, because, it's a very hard language to learn for someone abroad. Hungarian is not part of the Latin language, like the other Europian languages, but I would teach someone if someone ask for it nicely :) I'm from Hungary, and I can teach much. :) Ne féljetek levelet írni nekem (means: Don't be afraid to send me a letter) :)
The Hungarian language goes far back. It developed in a very particular manner and its structure reaches back to times, when most of the now spoken European languages did not even exist.
cool! I'vr been wanting to learn some hungarian launguage at some point!
(I'm 1/2 hungarian... the hungarian side of my family has been in the US for so long, that they stoped bothering to learn the language! the only one left who actually learned it since he visited there, died about 5 years ago... T.T)
Acoustic is easy for Polish, but all hungarian language is like gibber in Polish :) But I think Hungarian is fantastic, i wish to learn it.Thanks for the vid. 5
sztem ő úgy értette, hogy más nyelvekkel ellentétben, a magyarnak középkori formáját is meg lehet érteni. Ami sztem elég jó dolog, mert pl egy német nem értene egy szót sem 300 éve...

Why is "é" pronounced like an "ee/i"?
AndyMKordo 7 months ago
@AndyMKordo "e" is a regular E. "é" is closer to an "ee" sound. A trick to get it right is to say "e" while smiling :)

:) There are words in the hungarian language, what cannot be said even by hungarians, for exaple: megszentségteleníthetetlenségeskedéseitekért.
Or: elkelkáposztástalaníthatatlanságoskodásaitokért.
:D Brutal eh? :D never mind, keep learning!
