this dude plays like he practiced it for 10 years playing 100 times a day. maybe he did. my mom would make me do that if she heard this piece and wanted me to play it. *sigh* how i envy him
@44wsgs this is a LIVE performance of COURSE there will be tiny mistakes. CD recordings are 'perfect' because they can re-record it over and over again
Punch from "Punch and Judy" (a puppet show, I take it, that was rather popular in Europe back then) was a character notable for his arrogant boasts and wife-beating. He was used more for playful effect than to propagate downright misogyny, and there was no such thing as political correctness back then.
@kasyapa me neither... there seems to be an unlimited supply of hidden Richter videos. I'm happy that he did not care so much about people recording his concerts =)
I dont hate him. For example I like most of his beethoven piano sonata interpretions. At least listen how rachmaninoff plays his Polichinelle,he composed the piece you know. Yes there are original recordings of Rachmaninoff. Im not curious about Richter, Im curious about the composed piece,he is just interpreting wrong,or in his own way.
Not a hard piece to get the notes but hard to make sound nice.

This piece feels like Rossini in certain places. Very peculiar composition for Rachmaninoff.

I was told that this is about a man beating his wife..is that correct info?
pianomaster272 2 years ago
polichinelle apparently does mean to punch, but no it isn't about a man beating his wife, Rachmaninov wasn't like that.

he takes it so fast! very beautiful, and so what if it doesnt sound like rachmaninoff, it's still exciting and well played

Dude... at the very begining it goes from sfff to ppp immediately... of course there's supposed to be massive contrasts.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
@konzolmester He didn't 'interpret' at all. That's the problem. He just bashed the notes out without a hint of charm or humour.

@konzolmester :facepalm:
If you heard the interpretation of Rachmaninoff himself, you would be saying this
