The only reason the 37 was there was because of the loco failures/derailments the day before of the original locos for these shuttles. Should have gone to steeton for one of the north bound trips.
Gimme a '59 or '92 over a '9F' or similar anyday for heavy-freight...preferably the '92! :D
For passenger, you need a whacking-great steam-engine...whereas a single cl.43 or '91 could usually match or exceed performance and Vmax., likewise sa 158/323 over a little tank!
also been reading a couple of stuff about Steam Vs Diesel, the main thing that springs to mind is a diesel is usualy quicker at "getting Away" then a kettle.
Steam has really no-chance at matching a '37 for start-to-stop timings of similar maximum speeds; you'd need a pretty-massive heavy-freight engine to even equal a '37 for point-to-point timings!

Regardless of steam vs diesel... If you don't like steam, why did you go to a steam gala?

because I knew there was a tractor about...hence this vid.!

True, but I wouldn't fancy it's chances of hittnig, say, 50mph, between closely-spaced stations, whereas you'd be quids-in with a cl.31 or cl.37!

My point is that steam has passed it's best in my view, and I'm a diesel-nut, so obviously diesel is gonna be better!

I've tried to keep the "boring kettles" off the vid; that's coming later for other people, but yeh, she really was good!
