  • My family grew up about 300 feet away from Mike's family back in the 50s and 60s on Bakers Lane, Altoona! We love this guy!

  • I didn't even know Bonnie Raitt did this song. I only knew Mike Reid's version, and that he wrote it. Much of his music is unforgettable, and I've sung it to myself during trying times. I usually enjoy the writer's versions better in all music, as their feeling comes through strongest when singing them. I can only imagine what triggers a song like this to come from a person, but thank you Mike, your music overshadowed all other's in the early nineties. Real, Honest, Emotion

  • @breezerb65

Speaking of the writer's version, are you familiar with Jimmy Webb? Another great.

  • Mike is a great writer and I love his voice. He was on CMT with Hank Howard and several writers about 1995 and sang Old Folks and Call home. Hank and some of the other people on the show wondered why he didn't have a recording contract. Within a year he had an album out and several top 10 hits and was on Nashville Now several times.

  • Justin Vernon of Bon Iver has an amazing cover of this song. Anyone else heard it?

  • F..., he is right. F... . Tell it to your kids.

  • Correction:the song he CO-WROTE. Allen Shamblin co-wrote this beautiful classic ("I Can't Make You Love Me") and many others, including "The House That Built Me". Shamblin is a simply phenomenal songwriter!

  • If you would like to hear another incredibly sensitive song written and sung by Mike Reid, (it is not on Youtube), but rather, you will have to Bing it or Google it..............go to 'Call Home' by Mike Reid. You should be able to find the video of that song. It brings on the tears for sure. Also, on Youtube, look for Alabama's 'Forever's as far as I'll go'..................written by Mike Reid

  • @beaconmike He is incredible. He wrote old folks for Ronnie Milsap and its now on U-tub. I think they had a falling out and neither released it on latest albums.

  • Thank you soooo much for posting this. I have ALWAYS loved his version of this song. He can only do it like it should be done......after all, it's HIS song. The emotion he puts into this is like no one else. I have looked on here for years for this.........I'm so glad you put this up.

  • i have this on the original cd.... wish i knew how to upload it on here. the original is just soooo stunning.

  • Wow! Beautifully conveyed

  • That was earth shaking. I could barely take the emotion of the song conveyed by the writer.

  • Somewhere I have a PBS Austin City Limits of Mike and when I find it, I will post some of those live performances. He is a sensitive musical genius.

Once a feared man on the collegiate and Pro level, he now a revered man at the musical level.

Wikipedia will list some of the other great songs that Mike wrote that others did that are good songs as well.............a few by Ronnie Milsap also that Mike wrote.

  • @beaconmike

Yeah I saw that version on Austin City Limits...really great! he was on there with some other girl that came out and sang with him. that was a GREAT show.

  • I have about the last 60% of his performance recorded of this song when he was on the CBS Morning Show many years ago. It is absolutely stunning. Like many artists do, he has changed the song too much here. Fortunately, I have the older version. For this song alone though, I think he is a genius.

  • @RiderXXX He didnt change it! Its his song, this is how he wrote it

  • @cwflad What changed was not the lyrics but the way he sang it. Not nearly as good as it was in the clip I was talking about. I'll try to upload - some day.

  • Mike Reid, one of the most feared men in Collegiate and Professional Football, elected to both Hall's of Fame for tearing off Quarterbacks heads, and then goes onto write some of them most sensitive and loving, caring songs ever recorded.

Check out Alabama, Forever's As Far As I'll Go another great sensitive song by Mike. Also google Call Home by Mike Reid..........other videos on the web of him singing a song that can easily bring one to tears.

Mike defines the words; paradox and enigma.

  • @beaconmike post MORE! it was a man with a hammer, for one. same album had others, he had a beautifully trimmed beard,

  • Comment removed

  • Thank you for posting this...

It's all been said before. But Mike Reid is one of those "WTF is wrong with this picture" people. He's is just an amazingly talented writer, musician and soulful vocalist.

  • Wow, I always loved this song as it was performed by Bonnie Raitt on the Luck

of The Draw album but I never traced the origin of the song until now. And quite

frankly I am very impressed by this original version. Bonnie Raitt basically just

followed it and did'nt try to rearange the composition she just lent her exquisite

voice and vocal style to it and made it a Hit.
