The actual problem is:Since the cold war there's the atomic "balance of terror".Western efforts of joining Georgia into the NATO would break this balance when putting up "missile defense shields" in Georgia,and Russia wont tolerate this.The danger is,if Georgia went into NATO,and Russia then would attack,other NATO-states might react and the EU or maybe the whole world became cannon fodder of a third world war.

Don't be naive, in war the truth is the first causality. If the Georgian actually did what the russian says, they got what they deserve. If the Russian, along with Ossetians provoked an attack, what the Russian did was wrong. In the end the truth is most likely somewhere between the two sides. All government lie during war, it is part of what war is all about. In the end it corrupt us all, and that is what is the true horror of war. Good people doing awful things.
