  • Noooooooooooooooo !! I cant believe this legendary masterpiece is no longer working.Better get my lazy arse upstairs and put the record on

  • not your content clearly

  • Wonderful wonderful stuff. Shame sound on this is one sided.

  • Well after many years of undeserved obscurity they're back and delivering superb music as they always have, but this time even better!

  • Yes they always went down well in folkestone in the 70's, though last time I saw them was Southport I think Mid 83

  • ahh memories saw the Enid a couple of times in the 70's at Folkestone leas cliff hall.. awesome band .. mad as fish but brilliant

  • First time I saw the Enid was in a tiny music venue called The Tunnel (in London), we could not believe what we saw & heard that evening, it was like Holst, Yes, Mahler, Pink Floyd all massed together - symphonic! Hope to see more videos of this amazing concert (which I have on vinyl & CD). Have got to meet RJG & Steve S a number of times over the years and continue to greatly appreciate The Enid's music. They deserve a world audience!

  • Was at this gig, i went to all the Hammersmith shows. This brought back so many good memories for me, great times, good people and awesome music from a classic band, how many bands these days have a personal connection like The Enid do with their fans, and how many send you a free tape of the concert, none. I had the pleasure of going to Claret Hall Farm, in part thanks to an old friend called Tim who did some work for them. See you in Birmingham Robert.

  • dave storey!!!!!!!!!!

  • he's an awsome drummer........ he was actually my tutor in collage. lol

  • My favourite recollection of many Enid concerts from the 80s when i first fell in love with the music was of a gig at Sheffield Poly in the middle of the miners strike in 1984 when RJG, sporting a dress, engaged in a verbal 'argument' with some mining types. Suicidal... but the power of Robert's verbal wit beat the louts. Oh, and i got to have fun in the train back to Derby with a girl from Long Eaton who'd been at the gig too. Happy days...

  • The sad thing about the Enid is that they will only be truly recognised when they're long gone. Bit like Van Gogh. I went to see them in Bilston last night, just superb

  • This takes me back! I was introduced to The Enid's music back in the early 80s and went to see them several times. We even got invited back to RJ Godfrey's house after a gig and sat in his lounge drinking and chatting. Off to see them at Sheffield in Oct - will be just like being 19 all over again ....

  • I first saw the enid at Stonehenge, then forgot who wrote the piece of music that so moved me (in the region), then began hanging out with Marillion and Pendragon in 83/4 and met Robert at the Marquee Club after hours. I think Pendragon were supporting The Enid that summer.Followed them for the entire summer with my girlfriend, went to Claret Hall once but have in my collection a complete collection of vinyl, all autographed up to the seed and sower, and several birthday cards from CHFarm.

  • saw the enid in 79 and 80 and at reading fest..this takes me way back..pendragon...nick used to fix his copier lovely guy used to sit by his pool and talk about the old days..

  • which one is Enid?

  • I was there too - front row, just infront of were Steve was standing. I got goosebumbs watching that vid - I wanna see all of the show now.

  • Is the whole concert of this available somewhere becuase this is awesome

  • the drummer was my tutor at collage lol looks funny with long hair

  • Ladies and Gentlemen, please note this is one of the most beautiful pieces of music you are ever likely to hear, from one of the most distinctive albums ever made.

  • Think I'll go and play with my babies.

  • I saw them at Ashford Stour Centre in 1984 and got to meet them backstage. Beat that suckas!!

  • I had a mate in the 80's who claimed to have played occasionally with the Enid. His names was Laurence Sturges (he's since passed away) Does anyone know if this is true?

  • The Enid at their absolute best. I loved them - and still do!

  • I went out with steven's sister Marie and went to Gigs at the Rainbow and the Marguee

  • i am Stephen and Marie's youngest sister, Brenda's son!

  • Look out for Secret Green's debut album out soon (Francis Lickerish's new band)!!

  • Impresionante...que bueno!!!

Una de mis piezas favoritas desde siempre.

  • love the enid !美!thx!

  • I saw them at Reading and don't remember any barrage of piss filled bottles. Do remember being blown away by their set tho.

  • Brilliant, I saw them many times back in the 70's & 80's. The first time at an all nighter at the Lyceum in London with Motorhead on the same bill. Whay a difference, loved them both.

  • I was there too - they were awesome & there was only the very occassional bottle thrown

  • I Remeber They Did A Blinding Version of " Wild Thing" when I Saw Them At The Fairfield Halls,Croydon In 1976.

  • Francis Lickerish and Steve Stewart on guitar

  • Hey, I love the video, it's nice to see the video's on youtube. I was just wondering if you remember my dad, Tony Freer. He was oboe and keyboards. He was only in the band for around a year so there aren't loads of people that have heard of him. But yeah was just wondering :)

  • Hey, LittleNell. Yes, I met your Dad a few times at The Enid's house in Hertford and once at a huge 'get-together' (can't remember where that was). Of course, the chances of him remembering me are zero but we talked a great deal. If I remember correctly, he had been on is way to join the Halle Orchestra before joining the Enid.

  • continued reply to Little Nell: I have a piece of music called 'The Tallest Dwarf in the World' which (I understand) was to have been his piece on 'Six Pieces'. BRILLIANT oboe player. Please give him my regards. Chris Marsh.

  • i saw them for the first time in 76 still as good

  • Impressive indeed! Enid remain one of my favorites. Very inspiring music.

  • There's an Enid group on Facebook for anyone interested.

  • This just sum's up The Enid,

romantic England I fell in love with this lot at Reading 77, lying on a stolen piece of grass, the sun shining and i heard this sound, i sat up and was totally transfixed. I live in Newcastle , so a Guildhall venue i had to attend then a City Hall gig which was cancelled for (remember) snow, was it. what i love about the video is the arrangement, it is the original from Summer Stars and i still have the first 3 vinyl album's which i cherish.

  • Wow. What a surprise. Total goosebumps. First saw The Enid at Reading '81 and subsequently at the Derby Playhouse gig mentioned below. Me and my mate were confirmed headbangers but after they took Reading by storm that hot afternoon we fell in love with the Enid Aura and the people who went to watch them. This track washes over you in a warm wave of magical memories of a time that seemed less pressing than now. A reunited Enid doing a late night Prom in the Albert Hall: now that would be grand.

  • francis lickerish s my best mate's step dad lol

  • Great to discover the Enid videos. I must have discovered them first listening to Alan Freeman on Radio 1. Went to an Enid Weekend at some university campus in Essex one summer. Tremendous! Also saw them at Ewell Tech (North East Surrey College of Technology) in about 1976. I wonder where they are now?

  • Awesome! Saw The Enid at Reading Festival around '77 or so. My mate, John, actually met Robert John Godfrey in a music shop in London at the end of the 70's, his album 'Fall of Hyperion' had just been released. I still have it on original vinyl. A classic of its genre.

  • oh gosh but this brings back good memories. Went to see enid in 82ish in Newcastle. Didnt what I was going to see. Stood there all night with my jaw on my chest...totally gobsmacked.

  • marvellous video with marvellous music for one of the best band ever

  • saw these at the reading feastival 77,great band.saw them a couple of times after in swansea at the university and brangwyn hall,id love to see them again.

  • Was it the Uni? I thought they played at the Nutz club (in Mumbles) - I might well have missed the other gigs.

  • Im fairly sure it was the uni, I know i never saw them at the nutz club and i think i remember them being supported at the brangwyn hall by a local band i was really into, called The Ray Morgan Quartet.

  • Thanks for that. I must have missed that one. At Nutz they did 'The Dambusters' but instead of 'Land of Hope and Glory', they played 'Cwm Rhondda'. Magical.

  • I first heard them on Radio Caroline, then saw them at the Marquee, and then festival circuit 1977. Thanks for the memories

  • Can't believe I'm seeing this on YouTube,

saw the enid in holland in 1977 in the hague,.

    probably the best gig ever!

still got the album they sold at the gig, a masterpiece!

Thanks very much for posting this.

  • Thankyou so much! Brings back some fantastic memories of seeing you guys play Derby Playhouse some 25 years ago! Truly Inspirational. What a treat!

  • there is a very good enid fan site on myspace, and francis has a page on there too... Hey Francis will this ever see the light of day on DVD, would love to see the rest of the show.. hope yr well.

    John

  • I can hardly believe I'm looking at this and posted by the man himself. Is this really you Francis? My God, where've you been all this time and why is this footage not available to buy? Even Zeppelin re-grouped for a one off, surely not too much to ask for you to bang heads with Robert and get this out......... Still an open wound?

  • Awesome to see this, I too was at the Vines Cross Festival in 83, I think they were touring with the album "something wicked this way comes"

    Ahh nostalgia, great stuff.

  • Thank you soooo much! got into Enid '77/'78 and helped choreograph a piece of dance to the whole album for Drama A level. (Did I really just admit that on YouTube?!) Saw tons of gigs, but exotic smoking materials render the details indistinct. Thank you again, with a tear in my eye. Beautiful; absolutely beautiful.

  • why wern`t this band megga-big?

  • Mainly because the music industry couldn't categorise them AND because Robert Godfrey is too clever to let anyone control him - and I mean that sincerely. The guy should be Prime Minister. With Francis as chancellor.

  • yeah, spot on mate, i saw them in holland in

    76, best gig ever!

  • This is stunning, wonderful. Sounds like it is the very same version that appeared in the double LP album "Live at Hammersmith Odeon", recorded in 1979. Didn't know the show was video recorded. Wondering if there's more :).

Many thanks Francis for posting this.

  • Amazing!

I discovered The Enid 12 many years ago, at a local shop which imports CDs. Even the shop owner who bought the disc knew nothing about the band. As you might imagine, The Enid gets little coverage in the U.S. heartland.

Intrigued by a sample listening (and by the cover art by William Arkle), I took a chance on the CD ("...Summer Stars"), and have since aquired several others, including "Something Wicked..." and "Final Noise".

It's great to final *see* the band in action.

  • Goodness - I came over quite gooey watching this ! Their gigs were always very emotional for me. Happy days ! Lord bless you Sir Robert.

    Bye for now

  • Just found this quite by accident(?)

Am I dreaming or is this real! I was there too, when it was recorded - I was at most gigs those days! If the DVD ever becomes available, put me on the list for a copy!

I've lost touch with everyone now so thank you so much for posting this. It feels like I've gone back years!

  • Don't lose touch. We are separate stars within a mutual light etc.....

  • Self-indulgent, pretentious, overblown - and absolutely bloody marvellous. These guys were masters and took rock music to places that no other band dared. I was at the Hammersmith concert, and it was being filmed. Has this ever been released, does anyone know?

  • The thing is, there was no pretention only knowledge, no self-indulgence - they shared and it was all done with very great humour.

  • Fabulous to see this. Warm, yet mysterious - and a scorching guitar solo. I treasure my vinyl copy of the original album.

I saw them live a few times - Vines Cross Festival, anyone? (along with a band called Freur, who went on to become techno superstars Underworld).

Also saw them at the Marquee, where RJG was very friendly and invited me and my 15 year old mates to stay at Claret Hall (we declined).

  • i have a vinyl copy marked !! not for resale !!! the track the lovers just moves me !!!! EMI my ex brother in law was head of promo ! an arse hole ! to be honest !! but i got loads of great records off him !!!! in the region being one !!! and YES going for the one !!!!!!

  • Hi F,

been having a nice trip down memory lane and came across this !

    great music !!

    hope you are well

    all the best

    Phil Thornton

  • i remember driving from mancherster to newbury (berks( then to swindon (to pick a mate up) then to , i think divises (wiltshire) for an enid gig and it was cancelled ,, caught the re-arranged though fantastic .. trouble was the mate was not ompressed .. oh well , i tried to educate him

  • Hi francis

Worked with youy and the guys every time you played the lees cliff hall in Folkestone, great to see the video, brings back good memories.

    Andy

  • love The Enid.....have done for 25 years....this is one of my(many)favourites. The sooner RJG gets back on it, the better. Thanks Francis for putting this up.

  • wow...great to see this.. I can say I was there and it was an amazing night. The band had just signed with PYE and the Touch Me album had just come out. Always wondered what happened to Francis . Heard some stuff on my space and its really good. All the best mate

  • I remember seeing them at Cambridge scout hut gig sometime in the early eighties. Didn't appreciate the experience then - just wanted to headbang! Seeing this is a real treat. Just about everything done right in a prog rock song : technically brilliant, but accessable too. Actually written around a great hook. Perfect guitar work too. Cheers for this!

  • You can get this very same version of the track on the 'live at hammersmith volume one which i believe is available on cd on import. Fand is also on there and is just as sublime. The live versions for me are better than the studio versions.

  • Fantastic video.

I saw The Enid, back in the early 1980's, and they were awesome.

I used to have this track on cassette, that i recorded off the Friday rock show on radio 1, with Tommy Vance, but lost it some years ago, and i always thought that was the best version.

Probably never hear that version again, sadly.

  • Hi Francis,

Saw The Enid many times including Triad B'Stortford, Hertford, Reading and the xmas gig at the MARQUEE, when a mate an I stumbled into the dressing room looking for the gents after 2 bottles of blue nun and had to help out selling teeshirts by way of a sorry. Many many fond memories. you may remember Rowena's Circle. Ashley.

  • I saw the enid at stonehenge festival, then at some other places (possibly Hammersmith Odeon and Guildford Civic Hall or University) and they were always awe inspiring. I like all sorts, but unlike liquorice allsorts, (sorry, bad pun) they just seemed to vanish off the public radar. Always a little sad about that...

  • been to many concerts but 'THE SPELL' was my all time fav

  • Bloody marvellous to see this. This track , this version, was a real favourite of mine as a young chap 20 something years ago. I lost it so long ago - to find it here is just fantastic.

Just hearing it again makes me feel quite trippy.

  • Great that so many of you have such fond memories of The Enid. Fans new & old might want to check out the independent Enid site on Myspace. Plenty of nostalgia on there, an opportunity to chat with other fans. Hope some of you will check it out. Cheers.

  • Oh boy, goosebumps galore. So many memories have just come flooding back. Anyone who has seen The Enid will know what I mean. I wonder if there are any vids out there of The Enid playing (and singing yes singing) ..... wait for it .... "Wild Thing" ?

Many thanks for the post Francis.

  • also saw them at the leas cliff hall! more than once.Great memories.

  • Just did a search for The Enid and came up with this! Couldn't find anything about a year ago last time I tried! Listening to them it all came flooding back although I haven't heard them for nearly 30 years! I also saw them at the Leas Cliff Hall, must of been 1979 I think - happy days indeed!! Thanks for the video.

  • A happier days - at the Leas Cliff Hall in Folkestone and a London gig - cant remember the venue but we were standing on the backs of the chairs after just 2 numbers.

  • The Enid will be back on the road in the winter! All back cat' available in Japan, of all places! go to theenid'dot'com for latest news. This video is fantastic. Get it released properly someone!

  • Fantastic to see this band again here brings back loads of memories...great find :>

  • Francis, hi, you won't remember me, but just to answer a few of the questions raised in some of the earlier comments...

This line up is RJG on keyboards, Francis Lickerish and Steve Stewart on guitars, Terry Pack on Bass, Dave Storey on Drums and the other keyboard player(s)???

How do I know? From 86-88 as I worked at Claret Hall and played bass on the Seed & Sower and did the Clare and Dominion gigs around that time too.

  • The other keyboard player is Willie Gilmour, now back playing along with Francis and Neil Kavanagh (also ex-The Enid) on the new 'Secret Green' project. They will be playing at the Arundel Arts Festival on September 2nd 2007.

  • Awesome. I knew that the later Dominion concerts were filmed but had no idea there was footage of these shows.

    DVD release NOW please!!

  • So long, still fab

  • wow. devastatingly gorgeous chord changes. Their music is just totally bewitching isn't it?

  • been so long xxx thank you for posting !! x

  • Great to see this again. So much better than the only version available on CD. I remember seeing the Enid at those sureal gigs at the marquee - also writing to BUK records to try and find out more about them and getting blown away by getting a handwritten letter back from Francis. Ant more footage?

  • Great to see this on here, brings back some great memories.

I remember I got the chance to talk to RJG at the gig at Clare.I asked him about Fall of Hyperion (which I proudly owned)which he dismissed as being crap! (he did give a reason but I can't remember what it was, then I made the mistake of asking about Barclay James Harvest, that was where the conversation ended lol

    thanks for posting Francis

All the best in for the future

  • i first heard this on the friday rock show on radio1 when the great tommy vance presented it in 1982 this is the first time ive seen it on video thankyou your a star

  • Wow, saw the band in Groningen (Vera) in the Netherlands in 1976 with about 50 people, but it was a great gig and we all became fans. My friend already had the album "In the region...", I bought it that night and still have it! Memorable evening. I later played a while as a drummer in the English band "To The Fountain" (1991) and their cd "The horse won't lie down" was produced by Robert John Godfrey.... Coincidence...?

    Coos

  • Thanks for this Francis. It reminds me of the first time I saw you when you were in Eastleigh c.1980. Great! More please.

  • Saw this one and an earlier show at the Rainbow theatre which I think was the release of six pieces. Always enjoyed Francis and Steve together in those days. And I think Robbie on drums right? Used to see them in Hertford Church hall. I had the cassette that Enid released of this show too. So the solos are so familiar. Oh the memories....

  • aha thats my dad!

  • Oh come on Ondine, we all know that Robert has no children!

  • Hi Francis and all...wow, how great to see this again? Saw The Enid loads of times in the early-mid 80's onwards, notably the outside gig at Clare when you 'premiered' "Seed & The Sower" as well as some great Marquee nights and one gig in particular at the London Dominion with IQ and Pendragon!! Anyone go to that one? Will look forward to any new material coming out, as well as old Enid stuff on CD/DVD-welcome back! Best wishes, Ed

  • Great, great music. I played some to my 17 year old daughter yesterday, and she thought it was superb. My only Enid disappoinment was the reworking of the title track on the CD of Region; as with most music, I prefer the original. Anyway, looking forward to checking out your new stuff.

    Cheers, Rich.

  • The next time I saw the band was at the Gala in Norwich doing Something Wicked, and then finally at a pub in Norwich, The Oval Rock House, many years later. All great evenings to be remembered. I've probably still got my Touch Me link badges and the accomanying letter you sent (very curly writing)somewhere up in the attic along with a black faux silk bomber jacket with The Enid across the back.

  • I was utterly blown away by the sound that night and still regale friends with stories of it, particularly, if memory serves, the bank of keyboards on the right hand side of the stage and three pairs of arms swapping all over the place, contending for the keys, playing one particular piece.

  • I've just been listening to Region in the car and thought I'd check out YouTube. What a great surprise! I first saw The Enid at St. Andrew's Hall in Norwich, I guess shortly after the release of Region.

  • I'm from the northwest US. I could be wrong, but I don't know if there was ever an opportunity to see The Enid. I bought several of their records and only know them for these 12" black discs. But apparently there were actual people recording the music! lol. Wow. Great concert performance.

  • Saw the Enid many times in mid 80's; met Robert and Steven at Reading Festival in 83 where they signed both Hammersmith albums and delivered a show stopper to a crowd of rockers, including this masterpiece, my favourite of the Enid.

  • Hi Francis

Many thanks for this.Like Willart below, I too saw you guys many times in Middlesbrough and well rememberr meeting you all backstage at Teesside Poly.I also remember well an amazing gig you played at Redcar Coatham Bowl and you telling the story of Fand before the song itself.

Great memories, glad to hear you're making music again. Looking forward to hearing you again.:>)

    Cheers

    Phil

  • Thanks for the video. Enid are right up there with the prog greats like Yes & ELP.

  • I first saw The Enid in the early 1980's at Basingstoke, when they had released the 'Six Pieces'album. I still remain a devoted fan and love this particular track. Brilliant.

  • So good to see that! First saw The Enid in 1984 and still listen to them today. Some masterful writing and performing, dont care if it's fashionable or not! Good to see that Francis is up and about too!!

  • Hello Francis - Great to see this video.I saw The Enid dozens of times after I was blown away by a concert performed at the Town Hall Birmingham - 1978 I think. You introduced 'Albion Fair' as a track with 'lots of notes!' How True - and what Flair the band had then!Enid were never quite as good after your departure from the band.RJG later told me you had moved over to Ireland after a gig at JB's Dudley one time - any more old Enid vids?

  • Francis - great to hear you are about to start recording again. I used to folow the Enid when I was at Farnborough Tech in the mid to late 70s. I have recently been scouring the internet for a replacement t shirt (no joy as yet). All the best and good luck with the album

  • Hi Francis, thanks for posting this, my favorite Enid tune!! Best of luck with the recording.

    Danny

  • Dear Francis.

I have followed the Enid from the beginning and saw you many times at Teesside Poly and Middlesbrough Rock Garden. I am pleased you are well. This has always been my favourite track. Do you remember after a gig at the poly you came to my flat and had cheese on toast. Great memories. Great Music. Are you still making music?

    All the very best

    Mike

  • Hey Mike,

Yes I do remember. There was you and your girlfriend at the time. It must have been the winter of 1980 on the last tour I did with the Enid!

I am about to start recording again after about a million years break. Have a look at myspace.

    Very best wishes

    Francis

  • Francis

Many thanks for posting this - the live album from '79 has always been a favourite of mine. I have always loved this version of 'Summer Stars'. I saw The Enid many times from '83, and always regretted not seeing this gig. Best wishes for 2007. progal

  • I too would be very interested in a dvd of this... been listening to The Enid a lot on my iPod recently.. great stuff.

I've also just transferred the original In The Region LP to CD (There's differences to the rehamped version released on CD - Which I also have)..

  • Hi Trineand james,

Thank you for your kind words.Yes you are right, th cd version is different.

If you are interested, I am about to start work on a new album with some original Enid members. Recording should begin in March. Have a look at myspace for updates.

    Best Wishes

    Francis.

  • Hello to Francis, According to the Enid website your whereabouts are unknown! So great to know you are still around and thanks for the wonderful video clip. I always used to get the chance to chat with you in the bar after a gig and many times I asked you why RJG would start a verbal fight with one of the fans! You probably don't remember me. Good luck. David from Southend

  • Francis, Thanks so much for the post - can't wait for the DVD. I'm sure My wife and I were at the Hammersmith gig -with our three year old (at the time) daughter. Did you not give a rendition of the "story of Fand" sat cross legged on stage that night? - Do you still have the script?

Enjoyed visiting your site after stumbling across your MySpace site. I'll look out for the new album and bear in mind your professional services - could be useful.

    Good to hear from you

    Syd (Sometimes)

  • Hello Syd

Thanks for your kind words and yes I did tell the story. I'm flattered that you remember. I hope you like the new stuff. We are going into the studio in March to start recording in ernest.

Best wishes to you and your family

    Francis

  • Thanks for the memories Francis. I went to the The Enid many times in my youth at Teesside Poly and the Rock Gardens. The fact that i still like the music speaks volumes.

  • Hello Rotunda07,

Thank you for your kind words. I remember Teeside Poly very well.

    Love Light and Life

    Francis

  • Dear Francis

thanks so much for posting this, would be great to see more of the enid on here. it's funny have just been listen to the 'in the region...' lp quite a bit recently.

    still think it's stunning

    all the best

    John

  • Hey John,

Thanks for your kind comments. There may be an Enid DVD available soon.

Watch this space or have a look at MySpace.

    Best Wishes

    Francis

  • Many thanks Francis. Great to see one of my favourite bands again. Fond memories. Is this commercially available?...and whatever happened to the Dominion gigs that were vidioed? Is there any footage available?

    Thanks again.

    Bob Drower

  • Hey Bob.

Thanks for the kind comments. I will make the DVD of the Hammersmith gig available one day soon. Watch this space!

I'm afraid I have no idea what became of the Dominion videos, you might ask RJG??

  • Cheers Francis. I look forward to future developments.

    Bob.
