  • have it on DVD, love it!

  • 5:05 Only xylophones make skeletons dance. }:^(

  • 4:09 THAT BATHTUB. IT JUST NEVER DRAINS!

  • yery good

  • The cat and the rodent never got as close to surrealism as these bizarre beautiful cartoons.

  • who would of said this cartoon would ever be on utube and hd when they made it.

  • The audio is a good five seconds behind.

  • Why are these old toons are always creepy.

  • i think i see why some see the black skeleton scene as racist

they depict the black face era

white men would put on black face and poke fun a black people

they would leave the mouths unpainted saying that black people at least have white mouths

  • @EGPMH plus you also have the black skeletons singing sad songs and diving to play dice which playon stereotypes majorly

  • This is creepy, because you know that most of the people who wrote this are dead. I always find cartoons/ films this old a little frightening.

  • Who the heck were "Waffles and Don"?

  • 3:52 'Singing In The Bathtub' would be a perfect music choice here IMHO.

  • The organ at 2:40 sounds very haunting

  • awesome

  • Interesting- I'd heard of this "Tom and Jerry" but never seen any of the cartoons. You can see a lot of similarities in the art style and gags to Fleischer, and even early Warner and Disney. Kind of a dark ending, too.

  • Cartoons are perverted now a days. I've been watching this since I was like 5! I'm 14! Lol I love Tom &&Jerryy. :)

  • Lol at black skellys

  • Wot a stinkah!

  • I hope this isn't tom and jerry. It's like mickey mouse with the sound affects made by mouth.

  • i fucking hate when british people spell what as WOT so pissing off

  • ´Talking about bizarre stuff ..

  • But who were those two dude that got in cab and why where they going to the haunted castle?

  • Holy shit! The original Sixth Sense was a cartoon!

  • Who were Waffles and Don? I tried looking them up but I can't find them.

  • look so classic.........^^

  • the slang for craps is:

    "Roll the Bones"

Roman soldiers had used carved bone knuckle

fragments as dice... thus the term.

The cartoon inference here is on the

    'bone'(s) angle

    y'know... skeletons... bones

    blacks... gambling- couldn't read cards

so dey rolled de bones! and dove for the 'pot'...

    shit... man it's BOTH!

  • OMG 4:20 THE KKK

  • Only thing about this video is that the sound is late...

  • hehehehheh

  • I think the ending of these cartoons lead to Van Beuren's downfall.

  • @EmpressSintatan What likely killed them is that VBs cartoons weren't very good , and they lost a distributor when Disney signed with RKO a year or two later

  • Tom and Jerry(

  • Its kinde scary :/

  • thanks for tyhe classic cartoon

  • racist. haha ;)

  • if i was a kid and i`d seen this cartoon i think i'd grow up to be a serial killer :-) .. i think Jack The Ripper got inspired from this video

  • ATT all terrain train

  • They're skeletons ... and they're in blackface!

    *Cue maniacal laughter*.

  • names tom and jerry after mutt and jeff, right?

  • This cartoon came after Walt Disney's "Skeleton Dance" (1929), and it's got some funny gags in it, but it's not much more than a knockoff. The Disney and Max Fleischer studios both had better animators and musicians working for them than Van Beuren did... but this is still interesting to watch, as a period piece.

  • the sound is out of sync

  • @jerry29g if u wanna get rid of "racism," STOP using the word every fucking 5 seconds!!!

  • its cute

  • heh they hate jews

  • I had only seen a couple of these on old kids compilation VHS's, then a couple of years ago a flood of old cartoons hit the .99c store!

I bought about 60 DVDs before they dried up!

  • What a rare, prescious gem this is! Thank you!

  • uhhhhh it's sooo nice i like this cartoon very much

  • LSD

  • agreed

  • wow i love t and j

  • yeah.

  • nice ohh my pboblem not download hate this movie nice kaso problem not download

  • complet a movie it so verry nice

  • Great toon! On a side note, I just wanted to say that I studied animation for a while in college, and got to see a lot of banned toons, those considered racist etc, and they were most definitely. I think this cartoon has a tinge of racism at best, but c'mon people this was the 1930's!

  • oh, the art... the tragedy..... poor Tom and Jerry turned in to living squeletons, oh what a misfortune.

  • Trader Horn - Original Trailer 1931

  • Why would a group who hates Whites ever want to live around Whites or in White Nations.

    Look at Finland.

  • Come on folks, let's enjoy the cartoon!! ...I know it's gonna give me nightmares but heck, don't you love that obscure classic stuff? Just enjoy, it's easy.

  • dragonball z does that "black-face" stuff too with mr. poe-poe. i don't like the "black-face", but what's done is done. it was made way before i was born and the animators are dead and gone. besides that; good cartoon.

  • Thanks for posting--I haven't come across this particular episode on dvd yet.

  • 5:50 black skeletons... typical from a time when black-face stage shows were the norm. Almost all cartoons of this period banked on having some form of black-face inclusion. It was considered a top form of comedy and entertainment, often ignorant and/or inconsiderate for the harm it has brought on this great nation. This stuff still sneaks into entertainment to this day, although more sly and subtle.

  • Get over it dude... stop banging your drum and appreciate it for what it is i.e. innocent (ground breaking) childrens entertainment...

  • Racist? Did you watch the cartoon? What was racist about showing that they made a great singing group?

  • Now, the "Plane Dumb" episode was definitely racist, but then it was an unusual episode, even for the series.

  • macsnafu, I watched it completely several times. First off, these black skeletons were portrayed in "black face" style just as white entertainers had portrayed blacks in those days... features portrayed deliberately on the expense of all black people... those large white lips and "googly" eyes, etc. Secondly, the singing was done by white performers in a "black face" stage act style, complete with racist stereotype content. Didn't you notice?

  • Instead of yelling about the old stereotypes in cartoons, why not focus on the new ones... like the gays? You don't think a lot of the stuff that's shown now will be banned? It probably will be once gays have the right to marry. I don't think that's fair to the gay community either, just like it wasn't fair to the black community back then.

  • jdldjsxkmdsz,xckzs,xdm,sjdnmksm,ds nkmdjskdskdfknmaplKJBHGHlokjhvuytrewtykjhfdhjdhjdhcvfgfcxjchbxjhcjdhd

  • i love it but is it outta sinc for every1 else?

  • Ha ha! Nice!

  • haha

  • much classier than today's 'bullshittoons'.

  • todays cartoons are disgusting and perverted

  • But carmel956, your argument is flawed because Black people have white skeletons like white people do. So obviously the skeletons in this cartoon were made to look like old blackface characters.

  • Although the black skeletons part was racist as hell, great cartoon! Love the vintage.

  • Nonsense about the racist claim. Its not racist to be black (Afro decent). Would black people make similar claims about the white skeletons. Get a bit of balance! The addition of the black singing skeletons was no more than a reflection of what was vogue in showbiz at the time as for many other features in this cartoon. These cartoons were a new and exciting medium so the producers were really trying out a lot of new, pioneering stuff. Stuart.

  • well said

  • @carmel1956 yeah but look at the skin tones and the dialect

  • @carmel1956 rigth my friend in all american country no body say nothing about racist for black people every thing is racist, they are racist, like only white woman.lok TIGER WOOD and other black people,go jail.look tv black show only for black, channel for black, fuck you, black you are racist again in AMERICA every body sow these cartoon no baody no black say nothing about racist this cartoon bring me a lot memories

  • @carmel1956 Skeletons are naturally white or pale unless you burn and scorch it, then there's a chance it will be charred black. So to say it's being rascist to have a white skeleton doesnt make sense because it's white to begin with?... The cartoonist's black skeletons have the stereotypical large lips, country-like voice (dont even know how to describe it but in any reference to africans in cartoons they use the same style of voice.) and of course the deep black pigment (or bones in this case)

  • @carmel1956 Tom and Jerry have xewish beanies on.

  • @carmel1956 Hoe conveinient, the black folks say it is and everybody else sez it aint. hmmmm....

  • @carmel1956 How conveinient, the black folks say it is and everybody else sez it aint. hmmmm....

  • Sooo vintage! love it!

  • great best video

  • jthofjrgioer

  • Ha... good ol' fashion racism. Lol.

For some reason the black skeletons made me think of the ravens from "Dumbo." Wonder why (sarcasm)?

    Great vid.

  • Classic pencil animation and the sound is out of sync, a little. I LOVE IT!

  • they sure dont make cartoons like they used to...

  • çok Guzel

  • luv it

  • woo

    Tom and Jerry

    came a long way

  • this is bad!!

  • no it is not that bad

  • tom and jerry is the absolute best...

  • it is best crartoon play.ilke it very much.we have see the many time .

  • Damn this was horrid stuff.

  • coooooooooooooooooool.

  • wow,it's too old

  • Too old!? This is classic.

  • i agree i love tom and jerry i cant get my parents to understand in the 40s tom an jerrys they had color

  • Wow, the first one? That's pretty cool man. How'd you get your hands on somethin' like this?

  • hhmmm... why isint it a bunch of classic tom and jerry? instead...well, it looks nothing like that!

  • i love tom and jerry

    and MGM cartoons

  • i wish they would still show things like this on tv its well interesting

  • Great cartoon. Thanks for posting it.

I did not recognise the tune but it's nice to see Elton John has lost some weight too.

  • The Van Beuren cartoons of the early 30s are as zany and surreal as the Fleischer cartoons of the same period.

  • Possibly the worst sound overdubs in cartoon history!

  • i didnt understand what happend in this cartoon, pleaz explain what was going on.

  • all i got was that they gave these two weird guys a ride to their haunted castle .. n they saw all the weird things going on there n i guess they got changed into skeletons from being there too long?

  • OMFG I remember watching this when i was like 2 or something! soooo creepy

  • this movie sound is behind..

  • lol that was so f--cked up

  • are they in like a haunted castle?

  • you know it wasn't our fault that we were jammed into a boat and barley got fed, why the hell the making fun of us for something that wan't our fault?

  • hmmm

    craps and black skeletons??

    good ol' fashion racism

  • at least van Beuren getst the credit for it, unlike the maker of Itchy and Scratchy! lol

  • "Wot A Night" was the first of some 26 cartoons produced by Van Beuren Studios in the early 1930's. The original title cards (not seen here) give director and animation credits to John Foster and George Stalling. These are NOT Hanna-Barbera's cat and mouse team which would come along much later and were produced by MGM starting in 1939-40.

  • this was all hand drawn...

  • every cartoon was hand drawn peter5k! for decades, thats why it looks so good.

  • pajaro dodo

  • when did they become a cat and mouse?

  • They didn't, they just have the same names. These guys were long forgotten by the time mgm's cat and mouse came out in the early 1940s.

  • Why weren't they bickering and fighting like they do nowadays?

  • This version of Tom and Jerry were at first drawn in a literal style, directly resembling Mutt and Jeff, however by mid-1932, they were reincorporated into an increasingly rubbery graphic style. The rubber hose style ones to me were a little better than the literal ones, but this is still a great cartoon nonetheless.

  • Mama!!! Mama!!! I Love Tom and Jerry.

  • You can buy a 2 disc DVD set that my parents bought for my little sisters that have these 2 guys on it. I wish it was the actual Tom and Jerry though.

  • ESTO SI ES UN CLASICO DE CLASICOS.

  • Where did you get that?THIS IS OLD AS MY GRANDMA!!!But it`s kind of cooool!

  • the little one, i guess jerry, looks like a crack head.

  • Does anyone know if Homer Simpson was designed after the blackface cartoon characters you see in these early shorts? That black skeleton at 6:05 looks remarkably similar to Homer.

  • no, those are minstrel characters based off of vaudville comedy acts where a white guys would paint themselves black and act out racist stereotypes.

  • Oh yeah and the Something Weird "Weird Cartoons" VHS tapes have been issued, both on one dvd. It's got some stuff that is NOWHERE else, like "The Devil's Ball" and "Hasher's Delerium". Highly recommended if you can find it. Also, Thunderbean is a company that puts out SUPER cartoon dvds (though in the $12-$15 range).

  • Second time I've seen the black skeletons in these cartoons.

Were they a running gag, or something?

  • I haven't seen that one before. You can tell they had high hopes for this series, there's quite a few good gags and interesting animated effects in here.

I feel sorry for the Van Beuren studio, they never quite got it all together, but I'm glad we have their movies to watch.

  • Uh, did some moron make overdubs to this just for the YouTube video, or is that the original voice track? They're usually much better acted, even for Popeye and similar vintage stuff.

  • It's the original soundtrack, there's not much dialog anyway, mostly they make noises. Sounds fine to me.

  • haha i love these old cartoons :DD

  • fino´

  • Very good

  • Yes I'm thankful for YouTube,

Alot of this unique vintage animation would otherwise be lost to us.

  • Nonetheless, much of what survives IS out there to be bought on DVD.

  • Yeah that's true but quite a bit of it is out of print, The Fleischer 'Color Classics' DVD for instance nowadays is an e-bay item, I know that some of the Van Beurens work was released on VHS by Something Weird in several volumes sometime back, I'm checking across the net to see how many of the Tom And Jerrys might have been released on DVD.

  • Who doesn't enjoy old hard to find & watch rare cartoons? =) & who would've thought it would be on YouTube. Just about almost everything is on youtube...

  • ligghfhf

  • What an imagination, playing the battlements like an organ amongst other things. Wonderful. Thanks for making available as generally I think there is so much rubbish about.

  • Minor correction, Official Films distributed them to the home movie market, not Castle.

  • Thanks, I don't know how I missed that, especially since I own a bunch of them in 16mm.

  • Before the cat and mouse team Tom and Jerry which most people are familliar with / or would be the 1st thing in mind when people say Tom And Jerry. There was another Tom and Jerry cartoon... Interesting.

  • thanks for posting.. i really like the old cartoons and i was having a hard time finding them!!

  • Yeah, toss them some dice and watch them fall all over themselves.

Almost as depressing was Tom & Jerry discovering THEY were skeletons too at the end. I guess you should never pick up twins with big bushy moustaches and no arms in you taxicab.

Does anybody notice that the sound is about 1 second out of sync with the picture?

  • cool, thanks for posting this! the black skeleton part depressed me, but overall i liked the cartoon.
