Interesting- I'd heard of this "Tom and Jerry" but never seen any of the cartoons. You can see a lot of similarities in the art style and gags to Fleischer, and even early Warner and Disney. Kind of a dark ending, too.
@EmpressSintatan What likely killed them is that VBs cartoons weren't very good , and they lost a distributor when Disney signed with RKO a year or two later
This cartoon came after Walt Disney's "Skeleton Dance" (1929), and it's got some funny gags in it, but it's not much more than a knockoff. The Disney and Max Fleischer studios both had better animators and musicians working for them than Van Beuren did... but this is still interesting to watch, as a period piece.
Great toon! On a side note, I just wanted to say that I studied animation for a while in college, and got to see a lot of banned toons, those considered racist etc, and they were most definitely. I think this cartoon has a tinge of racism at best, but c'mon people this was the 1930's!
Come on folks, let's enjoy the cartoon!! ...I know it's gonna give me nightmares but heck, don't you love that obscure classic stuff? Just enjoy, it's easy.
dragonball z does that "black-face" stuff too with mr. poe-poe. i don't like the "black-face", but what's done is done. it was made way before i was born and the animators are dead and gone. besides that; good cartoon.
5:50 black skeletons... typical from a time when black-face stage shows were the norm. Almost all cartoons of this period banked on having some form of black-face inclusion. It was considered a top form of comedy and entertainment, often ignorant and/or inconsiderate for the harm it has brought on this great nation. This stuff still sneaks into entertainment to this day, although more sly and subtle.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
D3cyTH3r, as long as racist continue calling this "innocent" and "ground breaking" in context with it's being so called "childrens entertainment", I will bang that drum as loudly and often as I can! So get over that! Why do YOU refuse to appreciate it for what it is? Pure and simple... Racism! By the way, what are those red spots on your white hood and robe? Burn any crosses lately?
macsnafu, I watched it completely several times. First off, these black skeletons were portrayed in "black face" style just as white entertainers had portrayed blacks in those days... features portrayed deliberately on the expense of all black people... those large white lips and "googly" eyes, etc. Secondly, the singing was done by white performers in a "black face" stage act style, complete with racist stereotype content. Didn't you notice?
Instead of yelling about the old stereotypes in cartoons, why not focus on the new ones... like the gays? You don't think a lot of the stuff that's shown now will be banned? It probably will be once gays have the right to marry. I don't think that's fair to the gay community either, just like it wasn't fair to the black community back then.
But carmel956, your argument is flawed because Black people have white skeletons like white people do. So obviously the skeletons in this cartoon were made to look like old blackface characters.
Nonsense about the racist claim. Its not racist to be black (Afro decent). Would black people make similar claims about the white skeletons. Get a bit of balance! The addition of the black singing skeletons was no more than a reflection of what was vogue in showbiz at the time as for many other features in this cartoon. These cartoons were a new and exciting medium so the producers were really trying out a lot of new, pioneering stuff. Stuart.
@carmel1956 rigth my friend in all american country no body say nothing about racist for black people every thing is racist, they are racist, like only white woman.lok TIGER WOOD and other black people,go jail.look tv black show only for black, channel for black, fuck you, black you are racist again in AMERICA every body sow these cartoon no baody no black say nothing about racist this cartoon bring me a lot memories
@carmel1956 Skeletons are naturally white or pale unless you burn and scorch it, then there's a chance it will be charred black. So to say it's being rascist to have a white skeleton doesnt make sense because it's white to begin with?... The cartoonist's black skeletons have the stereotypical large lips, country-like voice (dont even know how to describe it but in any reference to africans in cartoons they use the same style of voice.) and of course the deep black pigment (or bones in this case)
all i got was that they gave these two weird guys a ride to their haunted castle .. n they saw all the weird things going on there n i guess they got changed into skeletons from being there too long?
you know it wasn't our fault that we were jammed into a boat and barley got fed, why the hell the making fun of us for something that wan't our fault?
"Wot A Night" was the first of some 26 cartoons produced by Van Beuren Studios in the early 1930's. The original title cards (not seen here) give director and animation credits to John Foster and George Stalling. These are NOT Hanna-Barbera's cat and mouse team which would come along much later and were produced by MGM starting in 1939-40.
This version of Tom and Jerry were at first drawn in a literal style, directly resembling Mutt and Jeff, however by mid-1932, they were reincorporated into an increasingly rubbery graphic style. The rubber hose style ones to me were a little better than the literal ones, but this is still a great cartoon nonetheless.
You can buy a 2 disc DVD set that my parents bought for my little sisters that have these 2 guys on it. I wish it was the actual Tom and Jerry though.
Does anyone know if Homer Simpson was designed after the blackface cartoon characters you see in these early shorts? That black skeleton at 6:05 looks remarkably similar to Homer.
Oh yeah and the Something Weird "Weird Cartoons" VHS tapes have been issued, both on one dvd. It's got some stuff that is NOWHERE else, like "The Devil's Ball" and "Hasher's Delerium". they depict the black face era

@EGPMH plus you also have the black skeletons singing sad songs and diving to play dice which playon stereotypes majorly

"Roll the Bones"
Roman soldiers had used carved bone knuckle
fragments as dice... thus the term.
The cartoon inference here is on the
'bone'(s) angle
y'know... skeletons... bones
blacks... gambling- couldn't read cards
so dey rolled de bones! and dove for the 'pot'...
