Not only does this allow Alto to hold his own against Brera (who's a cyborg), but it also allows him to accelerate to high speed quickly enough to outrun the Dimension Eater. If you've seen the Macross Plus movie, then you know what happens to a pilot when exceeding the limiter on a modern VF...
