for the coke experiment normal coke would've worked better and also nothing happens, coz u need oxygen to make it shoot up otherwise it does nothing. i tried this at work a nearly full bottle of coke (just opened) put whole packet of mentos in the bottle, quickly closed it and it did nothing until i took the lid off.

one question, wouldn't the blue-tack prevent said canister from reaching max height. Unless it fell of in the solution, it would be greater effected by gravity because of the greater mass, or couldn't the blue tack dilute the solution by absorbing some of the gas/solvent???

interestingly enough mentos in coke is not a chemical reaction, its a physical reaction due to the roughness of the sugar crystals..the dissolved CO2 in the coke clings to the the sugar crystals and forms bubbles (a very thermodynamical unstable process) and these bubbles then cause the affect you see ..no chemical reaction.

By the way with the mento thing, you have to open a fresh bottle of coke, right when you open it drop in a few mentos and keep lid off and it will go up pretty high, i got an A+ on that for a volcano explosion project.

Hey sorry to tell you kid but the "chemical reaction" between the diet coke and mentos does not FORM CO2. It's the texture of the mento that causes the diet coke to form bubbles rapidly and take the CO2 that is ALREADY in the diet coke to quickly extend to the top. Once the mento has been smoothed down even slightly the reaction quits. (hince why your capsule thing did not pop)
