Holy crap. Kenny is an absolute genius. lIsten to his solo on Jeff Tain Watts CD Detained at the Blue Note- "Mr. JJ." It will blow your mind. Coltrane with an alto. This is also Chris Dave years ago. What an incredible talent, so diverse. This experimental, improvising hard bop is still king.
Kenny Garrett, probably the most prominent alto saxist working today. My fave behind bird, cannon, woods, stitt...lol. I dunno, I just havent seen a more electric alto player guys, imagine improve so rythmically as he does. But TBH my mom hates how me moves too lol!

SICK PLAYER, but he's gotta stop moving for like a second! And please don't tell me that it's about the passion and the music, because I know. It's just annoying to see him go up-down-up-down-up-down all day long. But still, my favorite alto player to LISTEN to!
God, your idea of a live show would be so fucking boring. You gotta do what you're comfortable with, and if moving around helps him express himself, let him do it. If you wish to sit still, good for you. but, Everybody moves when they play. It isn't in your control. If you're focused on not moving, you arent focused on the music. The day I learned that, I got a lot better.
Any man who claims he can blow more than Kenny let him stand up now or forever hold his peace. We should all be thankfull that we are sharing this world with a Jazz Master!
At the end where Kenny and Chris are facing each other, they know exactly where they are because Chris does them hits with Kenny when they go back into the head.
I saw Kenny Garrett live when I was 14 and I've been hooked ever since; i'm now 21 and a saxophone major in college and Garrett is one of the guys I try to emulate most when I play the alto.
why dont you emulate yourself!!!!! I hate to go to a show and listen to a musician sound exactly like another musician. What's the point of being a musician. Might as well be a DJ. Like Wallace Rooney is to Miles Davis you would be to Kenny Garrett. Why haven't I found an album from Rooney. My point exactly, he "emulates" Miles Davis. A lil advice create your own and watch how far you get.
I do try to play with my own unique sound, but I find myself using the playing of guys like Garrett, Brecker, Cannonball, etc. as a reference when I play my own music.
Came back to check out Dave's swing chops... I don't know what to think yet. Most of it is so dense... he's really digging in. Seemed like the only conclusion was to have Dave and Garrett play towards the end. I hear that Dave can swing, but he doesn't do it in the traditional way.
i saw kenny garrett at yoshis a couple not to long ago and it was one the best performances i had ever seen i mean it was just so good this is a legend right here
I'll be honest, I don't listen to much current jazz because everybody seems to be doing what's been done before. Kenny Garrett is a brilliant exception.
I haven't listened to Chris Potter (I'll make a note of it), I love Dave Holland, I like Pat Metheny, I love Michael Brecker and while I respect Brad Mehldau, I've never really enjoyed his music.
Chris Dave is the hardest swing drummer I've heard in my life! I like Tain better but He's greatly influenced by Tain! It's awesome cause when he swings it's not swing anymore its something else!!!!!
somebody give chris dave a speeding ticket!!!
