I was just thinking that little ol me will get to spend and eternity with these great God gifted people and I believe they will love me and you as if we are so special as they are. And we will all see Jesus praised forever as we all sing a new song. My heart is being pulled to Heaven ASAP. Lord I want to sing as they, the song of the redeemed with all my heart, with a voice of angelic majesty to the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, JESUS.
from the UK a lost soul;now found the spirit from god.thanks to Bill Gaither,s videos I have no more wasted years; As now my life begins to live.Thank you all for your help , driving me towards jesus.I thank the Lord that he choose me to live.
Thank you. We bought some new hymnals for our church and a friend and I flipped through it and found this song. The words are so powerful. I later did some reading and found out more about her writing this song! It makes this song even more wonderful. Thank you for sharing this feed!
Karma342 ~ Thank you for posting so many of Doris Akers songs! I have been thoroughly blessed by listening to her magnificent voice and the sweet sweet spirit with which she sings! This is the way worship is meant to be!
I am not sure..I remember one of her nephews from the past..but his name I can't remember..I do have to correct the name I wrote for Doris's niece..The name should be Dedra..not Debra.Doris's brother was the pastor of one of the A.M.E. churches in the Southern California area, during the time that she was at Sky Pilot. Thank you for ready my book and your encouraging response. bless you. Min. Gene Viale/Cleveland Singer 64-65
.Her sister and other family members where in Grand Rapids..
I knew Doris. She was a proud African American Lady. Who never denied her race. I knew, her sister, nephew & niece Debra Akers of L.A.. Called to the world, she early on found a way to let folks worry about what her race was. For some she was to white, for other to Black.. No-matter to Doris, that was not what she was about..she was called and anointed to minister Christ, to all who would hear and because of that she crossed all of man's boundries. Min. Gene Viale / Cleveland Singer 64-65
@justmegospel Gene, I read your book. It was great. I really appreciated what you said about all of the singers, but I really liked what you had to say about Doris. I am glad you are making your comments on this website also.
Thank you. I have been looking for someone singing the second verse. There is also a third verse, but we rarely hear it. Can someone plese put on a video with all three verses?
@Sydney3518 Hi, I don't have a video of anyone singing the 3rd verse, but I do have it in written form. This is the third verse:
"If you say He saved you from your sin,
now you're weak, you're bound, and cannot enter in,
you can make it right if you will yield;
you'll enjoy the Holy Spirit that we feel".
Hope this is helpful. Doris wrote some very deep and powerful songs. The more I review her songs, the more I respect her as a committed Christian and artist.
Doris Akers actually was the Sallie Martin Singers pianist- for a while..Sallie told me that she brought Doris with her and introduced her to the California audience. I wrote about it in my new book "I Remember Gospel" And I Keep On Singing.min. Gene viale/James Cleveland Singer 1964/65
This, this is what I love about the south. Black, white...whatever, it is without a doubt the birthplace of soul and heart in music. God bless you! Rock and roll, soul, gospel, and country. There is an anointing on you folks. Life is hard, and it has been lately...especially for you guys in Louisiana. But hear this, hold your head up high, walk in confidence. The Almighty is on your side...sing loud, sing proud! Love, love, love this...and there is only one place where music like this comes from
Doris Akers was African American but most people don't know it. She was POWERFUL in her ministry. Incredible song writer and the power of God would really come down when she sang and played. Be blessed.
What's undercover about Doris Akers? She is an African American from West Virginia. I met her family and sang at her funeral in Minneapolis! God heal us from this broken the world.
@ThisSongILove I was sitting here thinking the same thing...my goodness!!!! And she even plays like she got some Black in her too!!! PRAISE GOD...I LOVE THIS POST!!!
It doesn't get any better than Doris Akers. I have a recording of her and her original Sky Pilot Choir that I wouldn't part with for anything. Also have her "Highway to Heaven" album that has the Jack Halloran Singers on it --- one of which was Thurl Ravenscroft, the voice of "Tony the Tiger"
Oh my...Doris Akers. Gotta go get the Kleenex. What a blessing it must have been to have her there! I'd love to know if this Gaither video is still available.
I really don't think so. Sallie Martin (who knew Doris since she first arrived in LA in 1945) said that she didn*t know how to read a single note... and everything I have read about her indicates (including interviews with family members) that she taught herself to play by ear as a very young child.
Love this clip! I was raised on Doris's music. My Aunt and cousin sang with her in the Sky Pilot Choir in Los Angeles. I sing several of her songs as I travel.
She was the co-founder, along with her husband of Grace Temple Deliverance Center in Minneapolis, MN the last church that Doris attended and where she was Minister of Music until her death in 1995. :(
Oh my word - what an inspiration. This had to be Divinely inspired. Her spirituality is obvious and her joy is contagious. I never was able to see her in person but thanks to this video clip I feel as if I have.
Awesome
