  • Loving the singer

  • Jag älskar Tommy Körberg!!!

  • 3 people have a border around their brains.

  • Everyone at my school is obsessed with this hymn compared to the others

  • @Smt8544 same lol, so much louder than any other song:P GREAT!

  • have to sing this song at school for a hymn :D hahah its quite enjoyable

  • @j12coxon yeah, we have our whole k-12 school singing it, 500 people shouting at the top of their voice sounds pretty awesome :)

  • Outstanding worldclass !

Tommy Körberg once sung when the TV show "Good Morning America" was sending a sunny summerday from Strömmen in central Stockholm. The reporters were speechless for about 30 seconds (!) afterwards, and then touched by the performence said. - Holy cow !!!

  • There's only ONE SINGER that really makes this Anthem rise above everything, the original singer of Anthem, Tommy Körberg.

    - What a performance !!!

  • @MrFunxy This man created this song! You can't tell him that he's doing it wrong.

  • let mans petty nations tear themselfs apart.... powerful.

  • Rysningar...

  • The best Swedish singer ever!

  • Honestly, what does this song mean? I don't know anything about this show and I'm just really curious to know what this song is about because it's so amazing!

  • @HPismyfuturehusband I think that this is the part when Anatolij, a chess player from russia, sings about his country, Im not sure, if someone knows more than me, please comment...

  • @HPismyfuturehusband I THINK it´s about his love for his country (Russia), but rather the ancient land, his HOME, regardless of names of nations given to it or borders drawn. Always in his heart, the love for his mother-land, his mother-country, which doesn´t change, whatever politics rule over it. That´s just my take on it.

  • I actually got the honor of performing this part, so from my POV when I sang it;

like the others say it is his love of home and the people who have made it a home and also about love of the game of chess. It is not just that it doesn't matter who is running the country, it is completely in spite of them. At this point in the play national boasting and foolish pride has ruined this game that he loves, he feels that it should transcend all the bickering and is sad that it can not.

  • @colinfun

Good for you I saw both the English and American versions. I loved the UK version better. The US show was too watered down for my taste. I still don't mind paying $125 each for the Broadway Show.

  • i think that this song is amazing. !!

  • No man, no madness

Though their sad power may prevail

Can possess, conquer, my country's heart

    They rise to fail

    She is eternal

Long before nations' lines were drawn

When no flags flew, when no armies stood

    My land was born

  • It's such a beautiful song!!! We are singing it for our chorus concert tomorrow! :)

  • Evry time i listen to this i cry ;(

  • amazing version love it, what do you think of mine looking for tips :D /watch?v=TUtQXEpUNhA

  • great version

  • sooooooo great he's the best ever!

  • Always get goosebumps at "Let man's petty nations tear themselves apart..."

  • On the Day Policing and Justice is handed to Northern Ireland Politicans...I think back to sitting in the Prince Edward Theatre listening to this song...oh folks....We have made a massive mistake....

  • If you like this, look up "Anthem" performed by the Rongedal twins too.

While they can't touch Tommy Körberg, I don't think there's many others who can do both Anthem and AC/DC's "Highway to Hell" or Bowie's "Life on Mars" as well as they do. ;-)

  • gåshud i slutet :D

  • i think this song would suit josh groban

  • @snufkin789

    Josh has performed it :p

  • sang this song in chorus... beautiful

  • Tommy körberg is one of the few things sweden has to be proud of:)) Heja på dig!

  • wonderful song, wonderful lyrics. So true. Love of your country, doesnt have to be of borders or army.

  • Beautifully sung. So powerful. Raises the hair on the back of the neck. Very few, if any, can compare.

  • "And you wonder could I leave her.... but how? " :'} i LOVE him soooooooo much :D xxxxxxxxxx

  • He's from sweden and so am i and i'm so damn proud of him

  • is there anyone with a better voice than this??

  • Comment removed

  • Tommy körberg is a swedish hero and legend....

  • "My lands only borders lie around my heart"

If all of us could believe that.

  • Tommy Korberg is sssoooooo Good. I love that voice.. :):):)

  • @TheMikaela00 slightly scary though - how on earth he can have such a high voice is beyond me.

  • chess will be playing in may 2010 @ stables theatre, hastings, east sussex, uk.

  • my brother sings this sooo well <3 beautiful

  • Probably one of the most beautiful songs ever written, probably the best interpretation. How can you judge and embrace another country but still love your own? This song encompasses it.

  • I totally agreed :) It's absolutly perfect, so powerful and amazing singed!

  • This is magic!

  • ohhhhhhhhh

    myyyyyyyyyyy

    goooooood

    He is amasing.

  • Could somebody tell me what my motivation is while singing this song? I'd appreciate it. I can't find the musical anywhere.

  • You're the new World Chess Champion, a Soviet citizen who is defecting to Britain to live with your new lover, after being constantly pressured and manipulated by the media and KGB. You're sick of it all and are seeking freedom, but you still love your native land. 'My land's only borders lie around my heart' - in other words, you're only separated physically from your country, not emotionally.

(You've also abandoned your wife and family, but that's by the by!!)

  • Thank you.

  • @swboy5 - It is more than just your country ... It's your homeland!

    "She is eternal,

Long before nations' lines were drawn

When no flags flew when no armies stood

    My land was born."

He's talking about leaving his homeland, not the political country - he doesn't care about the politics:

"Let man's petty nations tear themselves apart,

My land's only borders lie around my heart."

  • @hillc2 ever thought of what this musical is all about?

kasparov, ring a bell? (best chess player in the world, ever)

he did leave his country but his heart never left his country... russia...

the two b's in abba (björn and benny) wrote all the music together with tim rice.

    it's a true (nearly) story.....

  • @dablt

    Duh ....

  • There are so many great performances of this it's hard to decide which one is my favorite...it's a tough one between this and Josh Groban.

Oh, who cares. They're both awesome in their one way =)

  • I cry everytime i hear this song , it's beautiful !!

  • "Chess" was forbidden in USSR.

I think only because of this anthem it should be played in Kremlin in each concert for politburo members.

  • Guys try this one - find in the youtube browser Mam telent Mateusz Dembek Anthem ... great guy.... unfortunately didn't pass through semifinal;/

  • It's interesting to read the various opinions about which version of "Anthem", "Where I Want To Be", etc. is the best. Some are loyal to the original; others to later performers. What is clear is that the debates -- decades after Chess debuted in London and on Broadway -- demonstrate a passion for a show with some of the most beautiful music ever written for the stage.

  • very good vokal work on this one from tommy his great, i love his voice 5++++++

  • Holy shit.... :O It was a long time since I heard something as beautiful as this...

  • My land's only borders lie around my heart!! :)

  • o su corazon es su patria o lleva a su patria consigo ,en su corazon.

  • I have both the original and the 2008 recordings, and I believe the 2008 is much better. I don't have any beef with the singing in the original, I just think the new one is better arranged. I have noticed, though, that happends in many musicals, the original cast just sings the notes, and the further down the years it progresses, the more passion that musical has.

  • That's true. Check out the 2002 Stockholm production clips of Tommy singing Anthem. I think your argument holds true--it (the song) has more depth and passion there than here.

  • totally agree with you there :)

i think this applies to wicked. i dont like the OBC recording, but when i saw it earlier this year in london, i was blown away by kerry ellis.

however, i think the OBC of rent is fantastic ;D

  • Beautiful!

  • I will be singing this song for a competition, its a lovely song I love it <3

  • For my money the greaetst individual vocal perfomrnace on any popular record. I cried my eyesout when I saw it live on stage in Ches and he sings it masterfully. It brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it - try singing it!!!!!!!

  • Also Katherine Jenkins sang this song to the Queen at the remembrance day service at the Royal Albert hall two years ago, not an event you would normaly expect to hear a song from Chess.

  • great song

  • Josh Groban does a decent version but no one gets close to Tommy Korberg!

  • Let me tell you, I've been living through this time-early 80's-and this musical shocked me back then-and still does-the most amazing music and lyrics ever created by ABBA duo and mister Rice!

  • I agree completely. And the orignal London cast simply ROCKED...

  • I love this song

  • I have the English version of this song but what I'm really looking for is welsh version. Does anyone by any chance have it? If do, please answer me back, I'm really desperate.

  • Best Swedish male vocalist of all time...Tommy Körberg has some sick singing power..... worldclass stuff!!!

  • @SidTheKiD7685 Don't forgett Jussi Björling, one of the best vocalist ever!!!

  • It's a great song and to think that I have the opportunity to perform this on trumpet on my school

  • love this song! I wish i could sing as well as this :(......i might be able to give it a half decent attempt at best lol

  • Just give it a blast. It's good theraphy, especially when you get to the fantastistic lyric "How could I leave her?"

  • Jag älskar texten på den här låten "let mans petty nations tear themselves apart" Jag ryser varje gång jag hör det!

  • best version

  • I get chills.

  • kylamaite: It was originally a demo recording, if this explains anything. They (the ABBA duo) recorded this with Tommy and tried to find singers in the UK to sing this, but then realized they already had the perfect guy. His version in 2002 in Stockholm, I think, beats this one, so go check it out.

  • the live version is better

  • He just makes it sound so effortless. I just sang along to this, nearly ruining my voice hitting the high notes.

  • Look at this: watch?v=MYfpcddXWxk

  • Me too :)! Ahhhhh

  • i am in love with this song

  • eine hymne, für alle, die ihre heimat in sich selbst gefunden haben. eine liebe zum land, das überall ist, wo sich das herz zu hause fühlt. mit verantwortung und bewusstsein zum glück und zur freude.

  • Superb

  • amazing amazing lyrics, magical, thanks for sharing!

  • forgot the thumbs up!

  • herregud vilka kompositörer. vi kommer aldrig mer få känna sådan stolthet. tommy körberg gör ju inte denna sången sämre direkt.

  • Tommy Körberg makes me proud of Sweden :)

  • One of, if not the very best male solo from a musical. Powerful and with passion. Anyone could listen to this and apply it to themselves.

  • Best musical ever.

  • Such a beautiful song. <3

  • woo brilliant
